Opening soon in Potomac Village: Whelan’s Beer & Wine, moving into the long-empty space next to Five Guys. Owner Greg Whelan, a native of Ireland, says the spot will be “more of a bar with a package store than the other way around. We’ll have tasting tables, and I plan to tend bar quite a bit myself to bring some Irish hospitality.” Whelan has plenty of experience running Irish-themed bars: He operates McGinty’s Public House in Silver Spring, and he also ran P. Brennan’s Irish Pub in Arlington. His wife Emma, co-founder of Silver Spring’s recently closed Astro Lab brewery, will also be involved in this new venture. Opening is projected for mid- to late July.
