J. Chow’s, a local food court favorite since 1979, will serve its last meals on Christmas Eve at Westfield Montgomery mall. The family-owned restaurant operated in the White Flint Mall food court for more than 30 years, then relocated to Westfield Montgomery shortly before White Flint was torn down. For those who grew up on its signature Chinese chicken salad, J. Chow’s is a local institution. But business has been down since the pandemic, owners tell us, and slow sales paired with rising rents made them decide it was time to retire.

So sad about J Chow’s. Loved their chicken salad since first tasting it at White Flint. It’s the only dish I would eat at the Montgomery Mall eatery. Truly the end of an era!

Wow, that is truly sad and upsetting:(. I used to eat at the White Flint Eatery as soon as they opened (Bloomingdales came in the 70s…drove up there from where we lived in DC cause I’m a Jersey Girl so couldn’t wait for Bloomie’s!) then used to take my 43 year old daughter there when she was a toddler. Ate at Chow’s from the time they opened there thru their days at the Mall and nothing will ever compare…how will I go without my “Salad”, boohoo.
Best wishes to the owners and staff…they always served us with a smile and was so nice to see them regularly.

This is so sad! Please give us the recipe for California chicken salad! I got one every time I went to the mall and even some special trips. Been eating them since high school walking over to white flint from Holy Cross!

So disappointing… Love their salads! Please share the recipe for the chicken and the dressing! Best wishes to the owners and employees!

If you look on the Store Reporter Facebook page, several of our readers have shared recipes that claim to be dupes of the J. Chow’s chicken and dressing. We haven’t tried them and can’t vouch for how they taste. If you try any of those recipes, please let us know!
