Big news on the local salon scene: Zohra, which went dark nearly a year ago at the Cabin John mini-mall, has found a new home at Park Potomac. “It’s amazing how things worked out — the timing was perfect,” says owner Ofeer Marwani, who was lucky enough to have his lease expire just as the pandemic was shutting things down. While his stylists have kept busy making house calls to longtime clients, Marwani took his time deciding on a new location. He ultimately settled on the former Karma space, which was designed for celeb makeup artist Erwin Gomez and has been sitting empty since October. If all goes well, doors will open on May 15th. The new Zohra will be right across from King Street Oyster Bar, the upcoming successor to Addie’s. More on that in our Jan. 28th edition.

Pike & Rose goes to the dogs

This Saturday (Feb. 28th) is opening day for Bark Social, the new dog park/restaurant/workspace/gathering spot at Pike & Rose. Located just behind Julii, adjacent to the colorful parking garage, Bark Social will welcome dogs for $9.99 a day and dogless people for free. It also will incorporate a new version of The Beach, the outdoor summertime hangout that used to occupy that space. For more scoop on Bark Social, click here. Local boutique out, $9 bargains in

This week we bid adieu to Patrizia Luca, one of the last independent retailers at Westfield Montgomery mall. After five years and several forced relocations — you can now find Patrizia Luca on the second floor next to Apple — owner Mahmoud Nassaj says he’s finally calling it quits. With fewer people shopping in person, and little demand for the “night-on-the-town” clothing that he sells, Nassaj is clearing out his remaining merchandise and plans to close at the end of March. Meanwhile, on the other end of the mall: Discount women’s clothing chain Mulier, selling everything for $8.99 or less, will be opening in what used to be the Sears wing. (Editor’s update: A month after we published this story, Patrizia Luca made a surprise comeback in a new location. More on that in our March 25th edition.)
