Shake Shack moves in on MoCo, Rockville pizzeria closes, Amazon wants your palm

Shake Shack is about to be everywhere

Three years after Shake Shack made its debut at Cabin John Village, the burger chain is suddenly beefing up its presence in Montgomery County. As of this week, at least three new Shake Shacks are expected to open here in the next 12 months. The first will arrive toward the end of 2021 in the Dining Terrace at Westfield Montgomery mall. The second will open next year in Kentlands. And the third will be on Rockville Pike, just south of Pike & Rose, replacing the just-closed Arby’s that we wrote about last week. The Washington Business Journal, which first reported the news, says this location will include a drive-thru. Opening date: TBD.

Change is in the air at Woodley Gardens

Local favorite Slice of Rockville will close its doors next week after more than a decade at the Woodley Gardens shopping center. Owner Didé Summerlin, who runs the pizzeria a few doors down from Carmen’s Italian Ice, says she’s ready to start a new life in Florida. It’s not due to lack of sales: Business has been great throughout the pandemic and shows no sign of slowing down. “This neighborhood has been so supportive,” she says. “But I work really hard, it’s taken a toll on my body, and it’s time to do something that’s not so strenuous.” Slice of Rockville will bake its last pies on June 25th, but the space won’t be dark for long: Summerlin is turning her lease over to the Dubbaneh family, whose patriarch operated a Chicken Delight restaurant for 20 years at that very spot. The Dubbanehs are longtime owners of the Chicken Basket chain, and the younger generation runs the Middle Eastern spice company Z&Z.

Amazon wants to read your palm

Are you willing to let Amazon read your palm and keep a record of that image? If so, you’ll soon be zipping through the checkout line at Whole Foods. The retail behemoth is now offering hand scanners that link to your profile, store your credit card and let you bypass the cash registers with little more than a high five. The technology is already in place at most Whole Foods stores, as well as Amazonbooks on Bethesda Row and the Amazon 4-Star store at Westfield Montgomery mall. It’s also on the way to  at Amazon’s new grocery stores, including the one that’s under construction on Shady Grove Road.

    Good luck to Shake Shack if they open at the Westfield Montgomery mall. My family and I were trying to eat in the Dining Terrace when security guards walked to every table and told patrons, in essence, “the mall is closed, get out”. One guard loudly told people they had to go. We just purchased food from the only local and our favorite food business, J. Chow’s Chicken-Salads-Ribs. It was just after 8 p.m. We hadn’t even been seated for fifteen minutes. Dining Terrace businesses and the mall are open until 8 p.m. Send your reporter and check it out. Perhaps Dining Terrace businesses should close 1/2 hour before the mall closes. At the very least, put up signs to warn patrons them must get out of the mall by 8 p.m. No wonder so many food businesses never re-opened.
