Rockville movie theater reaches “The End,” Party City goes bankrupt

The final curtain is coming down on Rockville’s Regal Cinema, which will close its doors next month on East Montgomery Avenue. Parent company Cineworld, the second-largest movie theater chain after AMC, is shuttering 39 of its 500 locations after filing Chapter 11 bankruptcy last fall. Business Insider was first to report on the impending closings.

The party's over for Party City

There wasn’t much to celebrate at Party City this week, as the New Jersey-based retailer filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy after years of failing fortunes. Even before the pandemic, Party City was struggling for market share as shoppers began migrating to dollar stores, Five Below, Amazon, Target and Spirit Halloween. Then came two years of canceled festivities, plus a worldwide helium shortage that made it difficult to fill up all those party balloons. Party City currently operates about 800 stores, including one on Rockville Pike. No word yet on which locations might close.

Lovisa opens and two stores close at the mall

Lovisa opened its doors this week, joining the booming teen scene at Westfield Montgomery mall. (See our Jan. 2nd report on newcomer Papaya.) Lovisa is dedicated to piercings, featuring a huge variety of inexpensive jewelry for ears, noses, navels and other body parts. Like Claire’s and Icing, Lovisa will pierce your ears for free with a minimum purchase. In other mall news: Swimwear boutique Everything But Water is temporarily closed for a renovation, and Covid-testing mecca Same Day Health has gone dark.
