New home store for Rockville, spa time at Pike & Rose, Butter Me Up & HalfSmoke

HomeSense moves in

HomeSense, a fast-growing discount chain owned by T.J. Maxx, is moving into the former A.C. Moore space at Montrose Crossing. The Rockville shopping center is becoming a mecca for home and furniture stores, from Home Depot Design Center and the upcoming Burlington to Value City Furniture, Bob’s Discount Furniture, Marshalls and Target. HomeSense is pretty similar to its sister store, HomeGoods, with a vast selection of kitchenware, pillows, rugs, wall art, decor and textiles. But while HomeGoods typically offers random pieces of furniture, HomeSense sells complete matched sets as well as lighting, bathroom fixtures, paint, wallpaper and tools. The Rockville store will be the chain’s fifth in Maryland; opening date TBD.

The spa life at Pike & Rose

Newly open at Pike & Rose: The Privai Spa + Salon, offering massage, skin treatments, hair styling and nail services next door to the Canopy hotel. This spa debuted in 2018 as Elizabeth Arden Red Door, a glamorous brand that dates back to the early 20th century. Its name changed in 2019 when Red Door re-branded as Mynd Spa. In 2020, Mynd Spa went out of business and the Pike & Rose salon went dark. Perhaps the third time will be the charm?

What's up with Butter Me Up

D.C. restaurateur Andre McCain recently signed a lease for the former Aroma space at Westfield Montgomery mall, where he’s supposed to open an all-day breakfast concept called Butter Me Up. But McCain is already far behind schedule on his other local venture, HalfSmoke at Rockville Town Square. He leased that space in the summer of 2020 and announced plans to open that fall, but it’s been 18 months and renovations have yet to begin. When we spoke with McCain last week, he attributed the delays to a combination of permitting and supply chain issues, staffing problems and Covid-related slowdowns. Despite all that, McCain tells us he hopes to get both restaurants open by early spring. We’ll keep you posted.
