Montgomery mall makeover ready to roll, Barnes & Noble sets a date, new boutique for Wildwood

Montgomery mall set for expansion

The redevelopment of Westfield Montgomery mall is about to get back on track. This month marked the expiration of a year-long construction moratorium for the Walter Johnson High School cluster, clearing the way for the mall’s ambitious expansion to begin. First up: demolishing the empty Sears store to make way for an apartment building, a new garage, a walkable outdoor shopping plaza and a massive fitness center (likely a Life Time Athletic). Long-term plans call for a hotel, office space, more shops and apartments, and a multi-level Macy’s store with clothes and home goods consolidated under one roof. That means Macy’s will either add another floor to its existing building or build a brand new store on the other side of the mall. Either way, the existing Macy’s Home store will eventually close. Tea party ends with David's

David’s Tea is the latest chain to announce the closing of all its U.S. stores. The Westfield Montgomery mall location had a four-year run, outlasting long-gone competitors Teavana and Shafa Blends. David’s, based in Canada, is still in business outside the U.S. But local fans will have to be content with online ordering.

Barnes & Noble sets a date

Here’s another peek at Rockville’s new Barnes & Noble store, now set to move from Montrose Crossing to Congressional Plaza on Aug. 5th. Although the new space has a smaller footprint, staffers tell us the layout is designed to facilitate easier browsing from genre to genre. In other Congressional Plaza news, the Madison Reed hair color salon is now open and Neiman Marcus’ Last Call store is entering its final weeks. (More on that in our July 9th edition.)

Beachy boutique heads to Wildwood

A high-end shop from Delaware’s Fenwick Island is opening a new location at the Wildwood shopping center. Indigo Octopus, known for its beachy fashions and accessories, could debut as soon as next month in the long-empty space next to Flower Child. The shop will be just a few doors down from Sarah’s Handmade Ice Cream, also expected to open by summer’s end. (More on that in our July 2 edition.)
