Lord & Taylor, Attman’s, Bagel City, 7-Eleven and more store closings

It’s been a couple of weeks since Lord & Taylor reopened on Rockville Pike, and so far there are no signs of the store’s supposed demise. Lord & Taylor fans had feared the worst since May, when Reuters published a rumor that the company’s new owners planned to liquidate all its stores as soon as they reopened. Several months later, all 38 Lord & Taylor locations are back in business — and it looks like they’re going to stay that way. Of course, back in business isn’t the same as back to normal: At White Flint, the shopping hours are limited, dressing rooms are closed, fine jewelry cases are empty, and it looks like much of the clothing hasn’t been restocked since spring. But customers are shopping, and employees seem optimistic that Lord & Taylor will survive the pandemic after all. For a peek inside, check out Store Reporter on Facebook and Instagram.

Meanwhile, the parade of store closings continued this week as several major retailers announced more bad news. Ascena Retail Group, which owns Ann Taylor, Loft, Lane Bryant and Justice, filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy and will be closing a still-undetermined number of stores. And Tailored Brands, which owns Men’s Wearhouse and Jos. A. Bank, says it will shutter as many as 500 locations nationwide. No word yet on which stores might be closing in this area.

Attman’s is moving quickly on its buildout at Park Potomac, where the Baltimore-based deli is taking over the former Zoës Kitchen space next to Sugo. Owner Marc Attman, who closed his doors at Cabin John Village last spring, says he’s hoping to get the new place open on Aug. 17th. In other deli news, we have an update on the recent closing of Rockville’s Bagel City. Owner George Kavadoy told News 4 that shutting down the business was the only way to avoid endangering the health of his ALS-stricken wife. The couple’s daughter Stephanie, who helped run the restaurant for 20 years, told the station that she hoped Bagel City would return sometime “when things are safer.”

The new 7-Eleven opened its doors this week at Westfield Montgomery mall, even as some of the nearby eateries have yet to return. While we’re sipping our Slurpees, we’re still waiting for word on the fates of Cava, Gusto, Poke Papa, Urban Plates and the rest of the half-empty Dining Terrace.
