Oysters on the way, goodbye Godiva & Eyebobs, Burlington heads to Rockville

Remodeling is moving quickly now at King Street Oyster Bar, the successor to Addie’s at Park Potomac. Doors are expected to open by early March, and diners may spot a familiar face: Former Addie’s manager Ronan McEvoy has joined the team at this new venture. McEvoy says the menu will be similar to King Street’s other D.C.-area locations, which are known for their daily happy hours featuring $5 cocktails and $1 oysters. Goodbye Godiva

This Valentine’s Day will mark the bitter end for Godiva’s U.S. retail operations. The chocolate chain is shuttering all 128 of its North American stores, including the beginnings of what would have been a new chain of full-service chocolate cafes. Feb. 15th will be Godiva’s last day in business at Westfield Montgomery mall. Fans of the brand will still be able to purchase their fave at other stores — and online, of course.

This week we noted yet another closing at Westfield Montgomery mall. Eyebobs, the fashion-forward eyewear shop that had been open only intermittently since last summer, is now gone for good. Eyebobs, which just recently began transitioning from catalogs to physical stores, had been at the mall for less than a year when COVID hit. And there’s more bad news for other mall retailers:  L’Occitane has filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy and plans to close more than 20 stores, while American Eagle says it will close 250. No word yet on whether ours will be among them. On the good-news front, the bankrupt Francesca’s chain has found a buyer and expects to maintain about half of its remaining stores. Francesca’s recently closed several locations in this area, but still has a presence at Westfield Montgomery.

From books to Burlington

Another bargain store is heading to Rockville’s Montrose Crossing. Burlington Coat Factory, known for its deep discounts on clothes and home goods, is taking over the former Barnes & Noble space next to Home Depot Design Center. The store will join a savings-oriented lineup that already includes Marshalls, Value City Furniture, Bob’s Discount Furniture and Target. Opening date TBD.
