Here’s a sneak peek inside the newest Bethesda Bagels, opening Friday (Jan. 21st) at the Fallsgrove shopping center on Shady Grove Road. “It only took ten months, which is five to six months longer than it normally takes,” says co-owner Stephen Fleishman. “Most people trying to open businesses are facing a lot of shortages on supplies. But we’re thrilled at the way the store came out.” This is the chain’s first location in Rockville and its sixth in the DMV, serving up fresh-baked bagels and spreads, deli sandwiches, soups, pickles and kosher hot dogs. It’s a lot more spacious than the Wildwood location, but still designed for takeout only.

Boston Market is back

Has there ever been a better moment for Boston Market to make a comeback? The rotisserie chicken chain, which closed its doors on Randolph Road a couple of years ago, is now heading to Rockville Pike with a new location at the Towne Plaza shopping center. Boston Market, originally known as Boston Chicken, was a high flyer in the 1990s as working parents were delighted to pick up a “home-cooked” meal that they didn’t actually have to cook. These days, the chain is under new ownership and expanding once again amidst the pandemic-fueled boom in takeout sales. Opening date in Rockville: TBD.

The weeks after Christmas are typically filled with retail and restaurant closings, as struggling businesses hang on through the holidays and then call it quits around New Year’s. (See our Dec. 30th and Jan. 6th editions for plenty of examples.) But Westfield Montgomery mall, which suffered more than its share of losses these past two years, is heading into February with its late-2021 lineup pretty much intact. Other than seasonal popups, we’ve only noted one departure: The short-lived Gelato Galaxy, which had a six-month run in the Dining Terrace after Cold Stone Creamery closed. And the mall’s spring lineup is already taking shape; we’re hearing buzz about several new stores and restaurants on the horizon, not to mention the reopening of the ArcLight as an AMC theater.
