Goodbye Amici Miei – plus more closings for Potomac, Rockville Pike, Pike & Rose

This week we say arrivederci to Amici Miei, the Italian restaurant that spent 13 years at Potomac Woods Plaza before moving to downtown Rockville in 2018. Doors closed Dec. 31st, after owner Roberto Deias says the pandemic made it impossible to afford his rent. “After 17 years in business, it was really hard to leave,” he tells us. “If Covid had not come around, I would still be there.” Instead, he has taken a job as manager of the Takoma Park restaurant Trattoria da Lina. Happily, Deias is bringing along many of his former staffers — as well as some favorite recipes. “When one door closes,” he says, “you have to open another one.”

Potomac salon gets cut

Also closed as of New Year’s Eve: Studio Ten 83, the longtime hair salon at Potomac Woods Plaza. This exit comes just six months after the departure of the neighboring AcuSpa, leaving Potomac Woods with several empty spaces to fill. One of them will be scooped up by Baskin Robbins, which is relocating from Cabin John Village (more here). And we hear there’s more Potomac Woods news just around the corner. Pike & Rose gift shop checks out

Gift shop Olive & Loom will close its doors in the next few weeks after nearly three years at Pike & Rose. Owner Ferzan Jaeger says she’s moving the business to Kensington, where it will share space with her candle-making company Kin & Care. Jaeger, who previously operated Sabun Home in downtown Bethesda, specializes in artisan-made goods from Turkey and the U.S. This will be the second closing of the winter for Pike & Rose, following last week’s departure of Taylor Gourmet (more on that in our Dec. 30 edition).

Goodbye Danker, hello Wegmans

Looks like we’ve also reached the end for the Danker furniture store on Rockville Pike, which has had several “closing” sales over the years but now appears to be exiting for good. Owners tell us the lights will likely go out some time in February. The Danker store, which previously operated under the name Sheffield Furniture, sits on land that’s about to be redeveloped.
