Fall kicks off with new stores, new gym and Middle Eastern pizza

The fall shopping season has officially kicked off with two big arrivals at Westfield Montgomery mall: Aerie and Offline, both subsidiaries of American Eagle, are now open in the Macy’s wing. Aerie, a lingerie chain that’s been stealing market share from Victoria’s Secret, has won millions of fans with its inclusive sizing and refusal to airbrush its models. Offline is focused on colorful activewear, from leggings and bike shorts to sports bras and fleece. In keeping with the brand’s body-positive outlook, the crooked “i” in the Offline logo is meant to celebrate imperfections.

Activewear sales may be booming at Westfield Montgomery mall, but at least one fitness system has called it quits: The Forme Life kiosk has gone dark after nearly a year of trying to interest people in its mirror-based exercise program. Forme Life opened kiosks like this at 11 Westfield malls last year, but the demo models took months to arrive and customers complained that delivery dates were a moving target. If you’re still interested in mirror-based fitness systems, you can try out the Mirror at Lululemon or the Tonal system at Nordstrom. The mall is eventually supposed to get an entire gym of its own, but Westfield is trying to sell off its portfolio and no one knows if that plan is still going to happen.

Burpees & bubble tea at Congressional

Still more news on the fall fitness front: Orangetheory made its debut this week at Rockville’s Congressional Plaza, soon to be joined by CorePower Yoga. You’ll find both gyms in the new “FITRow” space, between Barnes & Noble and The Container Store. Also new at Congressional is Mr. Wish, the latest entry in a veritable bubble tea bonanza on Rockville Pike. Mr. Wish joins last week’s newcomer, Tiger Sugar, in a lineup that now includes Kung Fu Tea, Bambu Cafe, Bubble Tea Cafe, Gong Cha, Snowbots, Tea-Do, Ten Ren Tea, Ding Tea and Pearl Lady among others.

Z&Z puts a new twist on pizza

Z&Z Manoushe Bakery made its debut this week at the Woodley Gardens shopping center, in the former Slice of Rockville space near Carmen’s Italian Ice. The bakery is a new venture from the family-owned Z&Z spice company, whose patriarch got his start operating a Chicken Delight restaurant in the very same spot. “We wanted to be able to represent our culture through our food and hospitality, while paying homage to the legacy of our grandfather,” says co-owner Johnny Dubbaneh. “He was the first in our family to come to America and make a living for himself by setting up a restaurant right here.” The star of Z&Z’s menu is the za’atar manoushe “pizza,” which Dubbaneh describes as “a savory, herbaceous blend of za’atar mixed with rich olive oil spread on top of our handmade flatbreads.” The shop also will be offering meat pies, dips, fries, Middle Eastern desserts and cardamom-spiced coffees.

    I think I read in one of your articles that Arby’s in the Pike was changing to Shake Shack. Is that still happening? I saw a for lease sign yesterday.
