Red Orchard blooms in new home

Here’s a sneak peek at Red Orchard‘s new home, opening this weekend at the Wildwood shopping center. The 20-year-old gift shop has moved to a lighter, brighter and much bigger space, with plenty of room for an expanded array of kitchenware, textiles, artwork, jewelry and quirky gifts. The middle of the store is dedicated to food-and-drink-themed items, in the style of Red Orchard’s holiday pop-up shop Provisions. And the back section is designed for kids, with unusual toys, puzzles, stuffed animals and books — plus a ceiling festooned with colorful ship-shaped kites.

Goodbye Tara Thai

Tara Thai has gone dark after a seven-year run at Westfield Montgomery mall. This outdoor-facing space was previously home to Legal Sea Foods, which closed its doors in 2014. No word on reasons for the closing, but Tara Thai fans can still visit the Rockville location at Montrose Crossing.

Quincy's exits North Bethesda

Sports bar Quincy’s South is heading out of North Bethesda, as its longtime home near Whole Foods Market is slated for redevelopment. March 31st is the bar’s last day in business, after which some staffers will head over to Quincy’s two-year-old location at Potomac Woods Plaza. There are two other Quincy’s in Gaithersburg and Damascus; owners say they hope to find another location near Rockville Pike.

Bankruptcy for Corner Bakery

Fast-casual restaurant chain Corner Bakery file Chapter 11 bankruptcy this week, seeking to halt a takeover effort after years of mounting debts. The chain will be closing some locations, but the one outside Westfield Montgomery mall is expected to remain open. Management tells us this spot has remained busy and profitable throughout the pandemic.

Something to look forward to when the holidays are over: Three new options on the local sushi scene. In Potomac Village, En Bistro & Sushi is putting the finishing touches on its newly expanded dining room, which will include a full bar with saki and signature cocktails. Over at the Wildwood shopping center, Raku spinoff Rakugaki is also nearing completion in the former Wildwood Kitchen space, Both restaurants are aiming to open in January. And the third sushi newcomer, Kema by Kenaki, is expected to arrive a few weeks later at Cabin John Village.

Chinese BBQ on the Pike

A new Chinese barbecue spot, Hulu Skewer House, is getting ready to make its debut on Rockville Pike. The restaurant has been under construction since last spring in the onetime Mi Rancho space, next door to Yekta. The menu features skewers of meat and chicken plus sides like fish cakes, rice cakes, pickled carrots, quail eggs and milky buns. Doors will open soon for dine-in and delivery.

Capital Cryo, a wellness spa specializing in cryotherapy, just opened its doors at Wintergreen Plaza. A three-minute session in the cryo chamber, at minus 200 degrees, is said to help with muscle recovery, pain management, inflammation, poor sleep and other ailments. This Rockville location is the third for Capital Cryo, which also offers cryo facials, infrared saunas, sunless tanning and other beauty treatments.
