Year-end wrap-up: The biggest openings & closings in Rockville, Potomac & North Bethesda

December 29, 2022 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Man with "Open" sign

A year of rebuilding

For our local retail and restaurant scene, 2022 was a year of rebuilding. Some longtime businesses made it through the height of the pandemic, only to shut down after the worst was over. A new crop of boutiques appeared on the scene, offering clothes and accessories to celebrate the return of festive events. New restaurants opened with diverse cuisines, from Greek to Lebanese to Salvadoran to Italian. We’ve chronicled the highlights here, with links to fill in the blanks on any stories you might have missed.

Mall on the move

Westfield Montgomery mall lost quite a few businesses this year, but it gained even more. Let’s start with the restaurants:

  • The biggest news, last March, was the long-awaited arrival of Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana.
  • Next was all-day breakfast concept Butter Me Up, which opened in the former Aroma space. Its sister restaurant, HalfSmoke, soon arrived in the Dining Terrace with a bar and a boardwalk-style menu.
  • Greek Aroma, in the long-empty former Beefsteak space, is one of three new halal eateries that opened in our area this year.
  • Suki Hana took over the long-closed Sarku sushi kiosk.
  • Malia’s Kitchen is earning kudos for its soul food in a space that’s been home to three different restaurants this year. It was preceded by the short-lived Lazzaro’s Italian Deli, and Big Al’s Subs before that.
  • DQ/Orange Julius, a beloved spot for many local families, closed its doors at the mall after 20 years. So did the Moorenko’s ice cream kiosk.
  • District Falafel, a food truck-turned brick-and-mortar eatery, took over the onetime Fu Shing space outside the mall. Its menu is also halal.

A half-dozen shops closed their doors at the mall this year: Michael Kors, Amazon 4-Star, Vera Bradley, Ivyees Everything Honey, Sports Nation and longtime local boutique Patrizia Luca.

But many more retailers opened:

  • A new Purple mattress store took over the onetime Microsoft space.
  • Psycho Bunny is a men’s store known for its colorful polo shirts and skull-and-crossbones logo.
  • Sayki is a Turkish chain specializing in men’s business attire.
  • De Clichy is a trendy men’s retailer from Hyattsville.
  • Kickz carries rare and collectible shoes and jerseys.
  • A Beautiful Closet is a D.C.-based women’s boutique.
  • Fangyán showcases young Asian designers.
  • Papaya Clothing is a fast-fashion retailer that just opened its doors.
  • Lovisa is a piercing/jewelry store that’s about to open.
  • And for the kids: Alex Baby & Toys is the first location of a new chain; Toys R Us opened a store-within-a-store inside Macy’s; and Squishable opened over the holidays.

Last but not least: Last spring, the former ArcLight Cinema also made a comeback as AMC Montgomery 16.

Nourished + Well

Pike & Rose continues to grow

This was also a big year for Pike & Rose:

  • The spa inside the Canopy Hotel, originally a Red Door and later known as Mynd Spa, reopened under a new brand: Privai Spa + Salon.
  • Two new eyeglass stores — Lenscrafters and Warby Parker — both joined the lineup last summer.
  • There were three newcomers on the restaurant scene: southern fried chicken chain Roaming Rooster; smoothie/juice shop South Block; and Hello Betty, serving seafood and cocktails at the Canopy Hotel.
  • Six-year-old Owen’s Ordinary just completed a transformation. Its patio and adjacent dining room rebranded as Owen’s Tavern & Grill, while the inside dining room took on a new identity: Caruso’s Grocery, serving classic Italian food.

A year of change for Potomac and Cabin John

Cabin John Village continued its physical transformation this year — completing its long-awaited cut-through, losing several businesses and welcoming several others:

  • Baskin Robbins closed its doors and was a replaced by a locally owned ice cream shop, The Scoop.
  • Goldberg’s Bagels also exited, and will be replaced by Capo Deli.
  • Irish restaurant Lahinch, which departed last spring, will eventually be replaced by Augie’s Mussel House and Beer Garden.
  • Newcomer The Pretzel Bakery, expanding from D.C., opened its doors in April. And their breakfast sandwiches are good enough to make our Store Reporter Favorites list.
  • French bakery Boulangerie Christophe, also expanding from D.C., arrived in May.
  • Salad chain Chopt is now building out the space next door.
  • The long-neglected Cabin John mini-mall is also getting some new restaurants: sushi spot Kema by Kenaki  and pizzeria and bar Colony Grill.

Park Potomac welcomed two new Asian restaurants:

  • Yirasai Sushi relocated from Westbard shopping center to the former Elevation Burger space.
  • Pama Thai, from the owners of Kruba in D.C., opened in the former Wine Harvest space.

And elsewhere in Potomac, the historic Normandie Farm restaurant closed its doors after nearly a century in business. Chef/owner Cary Prokos ended his 39-year run, selling the property to a D.C. company whose plans have not been fully revealed.

Luxury GoRound

Rockville restaurant scene

A half-dozen longtime Rockville restaurants closed their doors this year, including three Italian eateries:

  • Amici Miei, which spent 13 years at Potomac Woods Plaza before relocating to downtown Rockville, went dark in January.
  • Another Italian restaurant, Baronessa, closed its doors in May.
  • Amalfi Ristorante Italian was going to close, but it was sold instead to the owner of Chef Tony’s. It will reopen soon with a new name and a revised menu.
  • Miller’s Ale House exited after a decade-long run.
  • The Woodside Deli closed down after 12 years.
  • Peruvian restaurant La Limeña went dark despite 15 years of great reviews.
  • Fast-food seafood spot Slapfish shut down at Montrose Crossing.
  • Eerkin’s Uyghur Cuisine closed its doors. (But it’s making a comeback nearby. More on that next week.)
  • Dessert spots Snowbots and Bambū Cafe also departed.

But we also gained a couple of new restaurants on Rockville Pike:

  • Chicken-and-waffle chain Hangry Joe’s opened on the Pike as well as the Travilah Square shopping center.
  • Salvadoran eatery Pupuseria Mamá Emilia debuted at Ritchie Center.
  • Naz’s Halal opened at the Edmonston Crossing shopping center.
  • The recently closed Slapfish will be replaced by Rasa, a fast-casual Indian chain that’s making its first move into Maryland.
Wintergreen Plaza

Rockville shopping

A number of new stores, from large discount chains to small boutiques, also opened their doors in Rockville this year:

  • Congressional Plaza lost Loft but welcomed two major discount stores: J. Crew Factory and Dick’s Warehouse Sale.
  • Across the street, Montrose Crossing lured two even larger discount stores: Burlington (in the former Barnes & Noble space) and HomeSense (replacing A.C. Moore).
  • Federal Plaza is now home to three boutiques: dd’s Closet, selling clothes and jewelry from India; Bonday, offering clothing, accessories and gift baskets from all over the world; and Ibhana, relocating from its longtime home at Potomac Woods Plaza.
  • The Persiano furniture business has expanded its presence on the Pike, taking over the space that was previously occupied by Danker Furniture.
  • Also new is Ebisu, a Japanese variety store that’s doubled in size since it opened last spring.
  • And not far from Rockville Pike, the White Flint Plaza welcomed two new tenants: discount supermarket Aldi and Maryland’s first PGA Tour Superstore.
  • The new Twinbrook Quarter development finally started taking shape on Rockville Pike, but anchor Wegmans told us it won’t arrive until 2025.

Elsewhere in Rockville, Federal Realty sold the struggling Rockville Town Square to a Canadian firm that already owned its apartment buildings. A couple of new eateries joined the Square this year: Spanish restaurant El Mercat Bar de Tapas, pan-African restaurat Èkó House, and Latin American restaurant Kumbia. But the new owners tell us they will be looking for more non-restaurant tenants.

Another property that changed hands this year was The Shops at Congressional Village. The Rockville Pike center was sold to an investment group that plans to fill it with international stores and restaurants.

Potomac Woods Plaza

The goods on Potomac Woods

Change is in the air at Potomac Woods Plaza, where several empty spaces are about to fill up. First to arrive will be Ricky Alessandro Salon, opening this fall in the former Studio Ten 83 spot near Starbucks. Next up: Baskin Robbins, relocating from Cabin John Village to the former Ibhana space. The third newcomer is fitness center F45, offering high-intensity interval training in the former BB&T bank building. Opening date TBD.

The taste of fall at Trader Joe's

Calling all Trader Joe’s fans: Food tastings will resume at the Rockville locations (and elsewhere) on Oct. 1st, just in time to check out all the new fall items. The post-pandemic format will be different than you remember: Details are still being finalized, but it sounds like we’ll be grabbing self-serve samples from an unmanned table. And sadly, the communal coffee pots will not be back. But we’ll take what we can get.

There’s a new spot for your sweet tooth on Rockville Pike — and for once, it isn’t bubble tea. Tropical Smoothie Cafe, now open at the White Flint Station shopping center near Ize’s Deli, serves up salads and sandwiches as well as fruit and vegetable smoothies. This is the second Rockville location for the Atlanta-based chain, which also can be found at Travilah Square.

Chicken and waffles, DQ/Orange Julius update and the summer of bargains

July 14, 2022 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Hangry Joe's

Chicken & waffles on the way

Hangry Joe’s, a “Nashville-style” chicken-and-waffle chain from the founder of SweetFrog frozen yogurt, is heading to Rockville with two upcoming locations. The menu here is pretty simple: chicken sandwiches, chicken fingers, chicken with waffles, Korean chicken nuggets and loaded fries. (Oh… there’s also a salad.) Everything is cooked to your specifications, with spice levels ranging from “no heat” to “angry hot.” One of the new restaurants will be at the Travilah Square shopping center (home of Trader Joe’s), next door to the Tropical Smoothie Cafe. The other will be on Rockville Pike, next door to Roy Rogers.

A bit more on DQ/Orange Julius

After our recent story about the closing of DQ/Orange Julius at Westfield Montgomery mall, we heard from many families with fond memories of this business and its friendly owners. Shirley Chu, who ran the shop with husband Tony Chuang for the past two decades, says her spouse felt it was time to retire. “For 20 years, we worked seven days a week with no days off,” she says. “But the children always made me feel so cheerful, and the customers would share both their bad stories and their good news with us.” Chu tells us she needs a break, but may end up going back to work somewhere nearby. “I really miss my customers,” she says. “Every day, they touched my heart.”

Gilliam's gone, but his art is worth more than ever

The D.C. area lost one of its best-known artists last month when abstract painter Sam Gilliam passed away at 88. Gilliam, best known for his colorful draped canvases, was the last surviving member of the ’60s-era movement known as the Washington Color School. “He was the first to create a painting, take it off the stretcher bars and string it up into a three-dimensional sculpture,” says Debrah Dunner (pictured here), a Potomac art appraiser who once helped assist in the cataloging of Gilliam’s own personal collection. “His works from the ’60s and ’70s are the most desirable,” says Dunner, who now works with the auction house Freeman’s. “But I think his work from the ’80s has been undervalued,” she says, “and the market is showing signs of catching up. If you have a work by Gilliam in your collection, now is a good time to consider a valuation update.” Dunner offers free auction estimates for your artwork, jewelry, furniture and collectibles. Target bargains

If you've got the bucks, they've got the bargains

Amazon Prime Day has come and gone, but there are still plenty of bargains to be had as retailers work hard to unload their pandemic-fueled excess inventory. Stores like Target, Macy’s, Gap, American Eagle and Best Buy are now offering deep discounts on athleisure clothing, sporting goods, consumer electronics, home decor and other categories that are currently flooding the market. All these stores need to make room for fresh fall items, so whatever they can’t sell will eventually wind up at discount chains like Marshall’s, HomeGoods and Burlington. And much of it will still be in pristine condition, having never even made it out of the warehouse.

Sequel for the ArcLight? Plus Indian food, Arby’s & more

June 10, 2021 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Sequel for the ArcLight?

After last spring’s sad announcement that the ArcLight Cinema chain is going out of business, it’s beginning to look like those curtains could rise again. AMC, the world’s largest theater company, is reportedly in talks to take over some of ArcLight’s leases. AMC already operates two local movie houses at Westfield Wheaton and Rio. ArcLight, one of the first theaters in this area to offer bar service, state-of-the-art sound systems and reserved seating, also commanded some of the highest ticket prices in Montgomery County. Stay tuned to Store Reporter to see how this plot develops.

A taste of Bombay

Recent addition to the dining scene at Rockville’s Traville Village shopping center: Klay Healthy Indian Eats, a fast-casual restaurant from the founder of Bombay Tandoor in Vienna. Inside you’ll find a Cava/Chipotle-style setup: Start with a base (rice, greens or wrap); add a protein (chicken tikka, lamb kabob, tofu or paneer); then pile on the flavorful sauces and toppings. The menu also includes samosas, fresh-baked naan and yogurt-based lassi drinks. Everything here is inspired by the meals that owner Rani Varma used to serve to her own family. “These are the home-cooked recipes that we grew up with,” says daughter Monika Samtani, a former local TV reporter who co-owns the business with her family. “It’s a modern, fresh, healthy and fun approach to Indian food.”

Arby's rides into the sunset

For the past couple of weeks, our mailbag has been filled with questions about the recent closing of Arby’s on Rockville Pike. Who knew this fast-food chain had so many local fans? Unfortunately, we don’t have any answers on this one. Arby’s declined to comment on the closing of this location, which appears to have been its last in Montgomery County. (Fast-food fans, take heart: At least there’s another Shake Shack on the way. More on that in our June 3rd issue.)

Is it over for Alex and Ani?

Yet another example of a trendy brand that flew high and fell fast: Alex and Ani, whose stackable charm bracelets were all the rage a few years back, filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy this week. Founder Carolyn Rafaelian, dubbed the “Bangle Billionaire” after she made Forbes’ list of “Richest Self-Made Women,” has traded lawsuits with the company since she was ousted in 2019. Some Alex and Ani stores are expected to stay open for now. The chain has already disappeared from Westfield Montgomery mall, where it opened in 2015 and closed during the pandemic.

Home Depot Design Center, mall dining update and the future of Flower Child

September 3, 2020 By Store Reporter 2 Comments

New Home Depot has designs on Rockville

With so many of us living the stay-at-home life — and embarking on pandemic-era improvement projects — the timing couldn’t be better for Rockville’s next big opening. The Home Depot Design Center, second of its kind in the nation, arrives on Labor Day (Sept. 7) at Montrose Crossing. Here you’ll find two floors of inspiration: kitchen and bath showrooms; Pinterest-worthy laundry rooms; and hundreds of choices of appliances, cabinetry, fixtures and finishes. In-house designers will offer free guidance, and the store will be happy to manage your project from start to finish. The Home Depot Design Center will provide a welcome new anchor for Montrose Crossing, which lost its Barnes & Noble just last month. For a peek inside, check out Store Reporter on Facebook and Instagram.

Mall update

This week we’ve got good news and bad news about Westfield Montgomery mall. First the good news: Local ice cream shop Moorenko’s has started scooping on mall’s the lower level. (Click here for flavor recommendations from the owner.) And several more stores — Eyebobs, Tumi and The Body Shop — are finally reopening for business. The bad news is all on the food front: Möge Tee has permanently closed, and there’s still no word on the fates of Aroma, Gusto, Cava, Poké Papa, Jamba Juice or the Sarku sushi bar. As of now, Urban Plates is still the only place in the Dining Terrace where you’re actually allowed to eat.

Will Flower Child bloom again in Rockville?

Another local restaurant with an uncertain future is Flower Child at Travilah Square Shopping Center. The two-year-old eatery has been closed throughout the pandemic, while its sister location at Wildwood has been buzzing with takeout and patio dining. Flower Child’s parent company, Fox Restaurant Concepts, tells us it’s unable to commit to a reopening date for Rockville. Insiders say the restaurant will likely be back — but not until 2021.

Thirteen local restaurants that won’t be back, sneak peek of the Amazon store, Peruvian chicken debuts, CPK files bankruptcy

July 30, 2020 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Thirteen unlucky restaurants

In the flurry of restaurant shutdowns these past few months — some pandemic-related, some not so much — it’s been difficult to keep track of which places are temporarily closed and which are gone for good. As we approach the end of summer, here’s a list of local eateries that likely won’t be back.

  • Addie’s at Park Potomac. This three-year-old reboot never seemed to regain the fan base of its fondly remembered predecessor on Rockville Pike. Other restaurants in the Black Restaurant Group portfolio have reopened since the pandemic began, but Addie’s won’t be among them.

  • Bagel City on Rockville Pike. This longtime favorite closed in March, and owner George Kavadoy originally expected to return. But as the pandemic dragged on, he changed his mind to protect the health of his ill wife.

  • Beefsteak at Westfield Montgomery mall. José Andrés’ veggie-centric restaurant pulled back during the pandemic, leaving only one location in the D.C. area. Beefsteak never did draw much of a crowd at the mall, where it faced tough competition from the Cava across the hall.

  • Chuy’s on Rockville Pike. The Mexican restaurant shut down in March after a four-year run at Federal Plaza. The Texas-based chain already had announced some closings before the pandemic, so the timing here was likely just a coincidence.

  • CiCi’s Pizza on Rockville Pike. This chain restaurant was a longtime tenant at the Pike Center strip mall, which also had been home to the departed Bagel City.

  • Gumbo Ya Ya at Rockville Town Square. This locally owned eatery across from First Watch featured a mashup of New Orleans-style cuisine and traditional Puerto Rican dishes. It didn’t even last six months in a spot that appears to be cursed, having been home to at least six failed restaurants in the past decade. (Remember Bobby’s Crabcakes, Tippy’s Taco House, 82 Steak Out, Ev & Maddy’s and Lab Cafe?)

  • Honeyfish Poke on Rockville Pike. This California-based concept was among the first local eateries to specialize in the Hawaiian-style raw fish dish. Owners had planned to open more locations in the D.C. area, but the expansion never happened. Honeyfish Poke went dark early in the pandemic  after a three-year run at Congressional Plaza.

  • La Tasca at Rockville Town Square. The Spanish-style tapas chain filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy in May and closed all its remaining locations. La Tasca had been of the last remaining original tenants at Rockville Town Square.

  • Le Pain Quotidien at Wildwood and Cabin John Village. LPQ was already struggling before the pandemic, and its U.S. division filed Chapter 11 in May. Some LPQ restaurants have since reopened, but these two won’t be back. (Update: A few months after we published this story, Le Pain Quotidien made an unexpected comeback at Wildwood. More in our Dec. 24th issue.)

  • Mirch Masala at Westfield Montgomery mall. The Indian restaurant reached its 10th anniversary in June, but the pandemic convinced owner Poonam Chopra not to renew her lease.

  • Nantucket’s Reef at Traville Village Center. It looks like we’ve seen the last of this Cape Cod-style eatery, which “temporarily” closed in March but hasn’t been heard from since.

  • Pizza CS on Rockville Pike. The Neapolitan-style pizzeria was already expected to exit this summer to make way for the new Wegmans-anchored redevelopment project. In this case, the pandemic just accelerated that timetable.

  • Subway restaurants in Potomac and Rockville. The sub chain recently closed its doors at Potomac’s Cabin John Village and Rockville’s Federal Plaza. It’s unclear whether the closings were pandemic-related.
Wintergreen Plaza

Amazon store almost ready for prime time

Here’s a sneak peek of the new Amazon 4-Star store, set to open next month at Westfield Montgomery mall. The shelves will be filled with an ever-changing selection of Amazon’s most popular and top-rated products in several key categories: books, toys, electronics, housewares and kitchen goods. You’ll also find plenty of Amazon gadgets, from Echos to Kindles, and Prime members will enjoy the same pricing they’d find online. This will be the first Amazon 4-Star store in the D.C. area. (The Amazon bookstores in Bethesda and Georgetown are a different concept.) For more photos of what’s in stock so far, check out Store Reporter on Facebook and Instagram.

Shin Orthodontics

Trouble for CPK

California Pizza Kitchen filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy this week, blaming the pandemic for its troubles. So far, it doesn’t sound like our area will be impacted: Staffers at Rio and Westfield Montgomery mall say they’ve been told those locations will stay open.

Zohra Salon & Zohra Men

Peruvian chicken at Fallsgrove

With all this news of restaurants closing, we do have one opening to report: Poyoteca, serving Peruvian chicken and sides, makes its debut this weekend at Rockville’s Fallsgrove shopping center. You’ll find it in the former Cheeburger Cheeburger space, next to Mamma Lucia. This is the second restaurant for Poyoteca, which also has a location in Baltimore.

New Barnes & Noble, Cabin John construction, who’s closed but coming back

April 23, 2020 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Books in, toys out at Congressional

Whenever this pandemic finally ends, here’s one thing we know for sure: There will still be plenty of books to buy in Rockville. Construction has been moving along at Congressional Plaza, and the new Barnes & Noble sign is finally up. In case you haven’t heard, the bookstore will be moving across the street from its longtime home at Montrose Crossing. (Timetable? No one knows right now.) Meanwhile, Congressional Plaza also lost a longtime tenant this week: Child’s Play, one of our last locally owned toy stores, has closed its doors in Rockville. Owners say the exit is permanent, and it’s unrelated to coronavirus.

More construction at Cabin John

In other construction news, bulldozers have been bustling at Cabin John Village these past few weeks. In addition to the townhouses being built behind the center, the parking lot outside the mini-mall is fenced off for upgrades to its asphalt, landscaping and lighting. Long-term plans call for additional retail buildings on this side of Cabin John. Stay tuned to Store Reporter for the latest.

California Tortilla

Closed for now, but not for good

While many of our local restaurants remain open for takeout and delivery (scroll down for our list), some have opted to shut down temporarily instead of making the switch. Bagel City on Rockville Pike has been closed for several weeks, and the papered-over windows had customers concerned that it wouldn’t be coming back. Not to worry: Owners tell us they’ll reopen as soon as it’s safe to do so. First Watch also closed its doors at Rockville Town Square last week, but the Florida-based chain says all locations will reopen when the time is right. (Update: Bagel City eventually gave up on its plans for reopening. The restaurant’s sign came down in June. First Watch, however, did return.)

Chuy's checks out for good

Along with all the temporary coronavirus closings, we also have news about some departures that will be permanent. Chuy’s has closed its doors after a four-year run at Federal Plaza. The Mexican chain shuttered several locations in the past few months, and the Rockville restaurant had been its last in Maryland. This week we also say goodbye to Mynd Spa, the most recent incarnation of the once-iconic Elizabeth Arden Red Door salon chain. Mynd Spa has gone bankrupt and closed all its locations, including the one next to the Canopy hotel at Pike & Rose.

Meanwhile... some businesses are booming

So who’s doing well right now? Grocery stores and drug stores, of course, and anyone who sells alcohol. The latter category is an important one for Montgomery County restaurants, which are temporarily allowed to sell wine, beer and cocktails along with food orders. Sales also are booming for Target, Walmart and Amazon as they scramble to fulfill orders for cleaning supplies, toilet paper and food. And big-box stores like Best Buy, Lowe’s and Home Depot can hardly keep up with the demand for refrigerators, freezers and other major appliances — not to mention laptops, phones and office equipment for the new work-at-home economy.

First look at Lands’ End, new boutique for Rockville Pike, skating season starts and a boxing gym punches in

October 24, 2019 By Store Reporter 1 Comment

First look at Lands' End

Here’s a peek at the new Lands’ End store, now open at Congressional Plaza with the most impressive collection of plaids on Rockville Pike. The spacious, brightly lit interior looks a lot like L.L.Bean, with clothes for men, women and kids along with cozy pajamas, slippers, outerwear, tote bags and home goods. Grand opening festivities will be happening all weekend. For a closer look inside the store, check out our photos on Facebook and Instagram.

New boutique on the Pike

Also new at Congressional Plaza is Sheyla, a pop-up boutique that just moved into the empty space between Child’s Play and Chico’s. The shop specializes in dressy suits and partywear from brands like Elie Tahari, Jones New York and Worth, including a deep selection of petite sizes. Another new boutique, Chaliskan, made its debut last week at Westfield Montgomery mall — and a third is on the way to Pike & Rose. Click here for more in our Oct. 17th edition.

Boxing in, sushi out at White Flint Plaza

Title Boxing Club, a popular workout spot at the Travilah Square Shopping Center, is about to open its second Montgomery County location. You’ll find it at the White Flint Plaza, two doors down from The Big Greek Cafe. In between: an empty space left by the recent departure of longtime tenant Hiro Sushi. No word yet on who’s going to fill it.

Get your skates on

Ice skating is back for the season at Rockville Town Square. The outdoor rink opened last weekend, priced at $13 for kids and $14 for adults including skate rental. Meanwhile, we’re still waiting for the three new Asian restaurants that are supposed to 0pen across the way in the former Mellow Mushroom space. More in that in our June 6th edition.

Crave checks out, Drybar blows in — plus Korean BBQ, bookstores & something new for Potomac Village

April 11, 2019 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Crave checks out

This week we say goodbye to Crave American Kitchen & Sushi Bar, which closed its doors Wednesday night even as next-door neighbor Cheesecake Factory continued to pack in the crowds. Crave had its fans, especially among sushi aficionados, but its four-year run at Westfield Montgomery mall was plagued by spotty service and perpetually empty tables. The Minneapolis-based chain was in the midst of a national expansion when it opened here in 2015. Recently, though, it has shuttered locations in Las Vegas, Miami, Orlando and most other markets outside of Minnesota.

Drybar blows into Pike & Rose

This week’s opening at Pike & Rose: Drybar, offering wash-and-blowout hairstyles from $49. It’s the third new business to open in the past few weeks between Uniqlo and Bluemercury, following the arrivals of Sweetgreen and BurgerFi. (Not to mention brand new gift shop Olive & Loom, just a block away next to Stella Barra.) What’s next for this new section of Pike & Rose? Sunday Morning Bakehouse. Click here for details in our Aug. 30th edition.

Scout & Molly's North Bethesda

New chapter for book lovers at Rockville Town Square

All of a sudden, two new bookstores have popped up at Rockville Town Square. The Story House, a mobile store for kids, has taken over a corner of Dawson’s Market with a charming and well-curated selection of recent titles. And just a block away, between Lebanese Taverna and Bonchon, local nonprofit Turning the Page has opened a popup shop to benefit its literacy efforts in D.C. The store, called Carpe Librum, will be open through August selling used books, CDs and DVDs. For more on Rockville’s literary scene, check out our March 28th story on Barnes & Noble’s upcoming move.

The Game Gym

New eatery for Traville Village Center

Korean chain BB.Q Chicken has opened its doors at Rockville’s Traville Village Center, taking over the former Quench space across from Cava Mezze. The restaurant is affiliated with the Virginia chain BBQ Chicken and Beer, which recently rebranded with the tagline “Best of the Best Quality Chicken.” What’s on the menu? Honey garlic wings, kimchi ramen, fried dumplings, bulgogi rice bowls and a variety of shareable platters fried in olive oil. Click here to check  it out.

Wok's up in Potomac Village

New restaurant on the way to Potomac Village: Fire Wok, presumably serving Chinese cuisine, is moving into the old Fortune Garden space next to SunTrust at Potomac Promenade. This one is a bit of a mystery: There’s a restaurant with the same name in Baltimore County, but it appears the two eateries are not related. We’ll report back when we have more details.

Cabin John construction, Flower Child at Wildwood — plus Tesla, Invisalign and a closing on Rockville Pike

March 14, 2019 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

New round of construction at Cabin John

A large section of the parking lot at Cabin John Village was fenced off this week as workers began installing new lights between CVS and the center’s new restaurants. The lighting project, along with all the updated signage and facades, should be finished before the weather warms up. So what’s next for Cabin John? Sisters Thai, now expected to open in late spring. And after that? Check out our Nov. 1st edition for details on the long-term construction plan.

One's staying, one's going: Tesla & Invisalign at the mall

This has been a head-spinning week for fans of carmaker Tesla, which announced plans to close all of its retail stores last Thursday and reversed that decision a few days later. Tesla now says it will keep most of its stores after all, including the one at Westfield Montgomery mall. Meanwhile, the Invisalign orthodontic chain is unexpectedly closing all its stores for real. The decision comes after a legal battle with a competitor, SmileDirectClub, which accused Invisalign of violating a non-compete agreement between the two companies. Arbitrators agreed with SmileDirectClub. All Invisalign stores, including the one at Westfield Montgomery, will be gone by April 3rd.

Flower Child to bloom this summer

Flower Child, the hippie-chic restaurant chain from the founders of True Food Kitchen, is eyeing a July opening at Wildwood. The Phoenix-based company is known for its healthy, flavorful dishes that cater to special diets, from vegan to paleo to keto to gluten-free. This will be the second Flower Child in Montgomery County; the first opened last fall at Travilah Square Shopping Center.

Rockville swim store goes under

It looks like local shoppers will have to find somewhere new to buy their swim gear this summer. Cassel’s Swim & Awards, previously known as Aardvark Swim & Sport, has closed its doors after more than two decades at Wintergreen Plaza. The store changed hands two years ago after its founder retired, and the new owners declined to extend their lease. Wintergreen, which has become a hub for sports stores and health-related businesses, is looking for a new tenant.

November 22, 2018 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Happy Thanksgiving — and let the shopping begin

Just about the time you’re finishing that last piece of pumpkin pie, lots of stores will be opening their doors for the earliest Black Friday shoppers. Westfield Montgomery mall will be open from 6 p.m. to midnight on Thursday — although some of the biggest stores, including Apple and Nordstrom, will be sitting it out until Friday. Most of Rockville’s major retailers will be closed on Thanksgiving, reopening as early as 6 a.m. for Friday morning door-busters. If you prefer a stress-free shopping experience, pay a visit to your local retailers like the ones at Cabin John Village. Many will be offering terrific Black Friday deals, and they’ll even handle the gift-wrapping for you. Scroll down for details.

Last hurrah for Sears and the Macy's Home Store

This will be the last Black Friday for Sears at Westfield Montgomery mall, and likely for the Macy’s Home Store as well. From what we hear, there’s a new Life Time Athletic fitness club and eventually a whole new Macy’s store on the way. More on these plans in our Oct. 25th edition. And stay tuned for next week, when we have some news about a big change happening on Rockville Pike.

New restaurants for the holidays

What’s new on the holiday dining scene? Flower Child, the new fast-casual restaurant at Travilah Square Shopping Center, offers a healthy, veg-heavy menu that makes a great counterpart to all those Thanksgiving calories. Nada, specializing in tacos and cocktails, opened its doors on Monday at Pike & Rose. We haven’t tried it yet, but the interior is lovely. And Julii, a new French/Mediterranean restaurant from the founders of Cava, will be opening down the street in about a week. This week we took a sneak-peek tour with chef Sasha Felikson, who’s supervising every detail from the Moroccan tagine cookware to the chocolate soufflés. Check out our Facebook page for photos of all three places.

New eateries for Pike & Rose, Westfield Montgomery and Travilah Square — plus a fabulous holiday boutique show

New restaurants & more for Pike & Rose

This fall will be a busy one for Pike & Rose, with the Mexican restaurant Nada arriving this month and the much-hyped Julii not far behind. Nada, which calls itself a “taco and cocktail joint,” is set to open Nov. 19th across the street from Pinstripes. We’ll keep you posted on the opening date for Julii, a new venture from the founders of Cava that should be here before the holidays. Meanwhile: Seasons Oil & Vinegar Taproom, one of the first tenants to open at Pike & Rose, will be exiting after four years. Taking its place will be Olive & Loom, a gift shop specializing in Turkish towels and olive oil bath products. Opening is set for next spring.
