Arhaus moves to the mall, Rakugaki opens, Trapezaria closes, Potomac boutique goes dark

March 16, 2023 By Store Reporter 2 Comments

Arhaus

Arhaus makes a move

Arhaus, a fixture on Rockville Pike since 2011, is leaving North Bethesda for a new home at Westfield Montgomery mall. The “globally inspired” furniture and home decor chain, with about 80 stores nationwide, sells goods from around the world with an emphasis on sustainability. Many of its pieces are made with recycled wood, metals and plastics; some are repurposed antiques. The new store will occupy 10,000 square feet on the lower level of the Nordstrom wing. Grand opening is set for March 31st.

Goodbye Trapezaria, hello Eerkin's

Lots of changes this week on North Washington Street in downtown Rockville, as a longtime Greek restaurant closed its doors and a new halal restaurant opened. Gone for good: Trapezaria Greek Kuzina, after a 10-year run. Owner Billy Kay tells us he plans to focus full-time on his auto auction company. “The restaurant business is tough,” he says, “especially in the Town Center.” Elsewhere on North Washington, Eerkin’s Uyghur Cuisine just opened in the former Amici Miei space at the Courthouse Center. Eerkin’s, which serves halal Asian food, relocated after a fire at its previous home in the Shops of Congressional Village.

Rakugaki

A Raku debut

Here’s a peek inside new sushi spot Rakugaki (“little Raku”), which opened last weekend at the Wildwood shops after a year of renovations to the former Wildwood Kitchen space. The menu features many favorites from Raku’s Bethesda and D.C. locations, but there are quite a few new dishes to try — including a selection of house-made Japanese noodles. Also: fun sundae-style desserts and a full bar specializing in Japanese whiskey, shochu and sake. For now, Rakugaki is only open for dinner.

Gym & Tonic

Gym & Tonic goes dark

Athleisure boutique Gym & Tonic has closed its doors after nearly five years at Park Potomac. “Our lease was coming up, and we just didn’t love this location — there’s not enough foot traffic,” says owner Wendy Abelman, who ran the store with business partner Amy Morgan Block. Abelman says they’re hoping to reopen at a different shopping center, likely either in Potomac or Bethesda.

Two openings at Cabin John, construction near Life Time, designer shoe store closes

February 2, 2023 By Store Reporter 2 Comments

Rewild

New at Cabin John Village

Two new businesses opened their doors this week at Cabin John Village. Ever/Body, a cosmetic dermatology spa near California Tortilla, specializes in facials, peels, Botox, body-sculpting and the like. And Rewild, a D.C.-based houseplant boutique, is the first business to open in the shopping center’s new cut-through corridor. Co-owner Joseph Ressler, a 2005 Wootton High School grad, says his stores are known for their giftable plants, expert advice and “interior plant design” services. He also plans to offer crafty workshops like flower arranging, making flower crowns and building desert terrariums.

Rockville construction outside Life Time

What's going on next to Life Time in Rockville?

We’ve been getting a lot of questions about construction next door to the Life Time gym in Rockville, directly across the street from Potomac Woods Plaza. While rumors have been flying about the possibility of another shopping center, what we’re actually going to get is a bunch of new housing. The site plan calls for condominiums, townhomes, and a Brightview senior living community with multiple levels of care. And Life Time, which now markets itself as an “athletic country club,” is staying put.

Stuart Weitzman steps out

This week we say goodbye to luxury shoe boutique Stuart Weitzman, which just closed its doors at Westfield Montgomery mall. The departure will not come as a surprise to anyone who’s passed by the store in recent months, when the lights were frequently off during normal business hours. Recently, a manager told us she was the store’s only employee and couldn’t be expected to work seven days a week. The Stuart Weitzman brand, with shoes and boots typically priced from $300 to $995, has fared poorly since the pandemic compared with sister companies Kate Spade and Coach. There are no other Stuart Weitzman stores in the D.C. area.

Macy’s closing sale, new Potomac pet shop and a sushi sneak peek

January 12, 2023 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Glittery shoes at Macy's

Macy's closing brings the bargains

Bargain-hunters have been descending on Macy’s at Lakeforest Mall after last week’s announcement that it’s getting ready to close. Macy’s had been the last department store still in business at Lakeforest, which is slated for redevelopment as early as next year. So are the deals at this location worth the trip to Gaithersburg? Probably not yet. Much of the inventory is currently marked 20 to 30 percent off, but employees tell us you can pretty much get those same discounts online. The dramatic drops — likely 75 to 80 percent off — will happen in the store’s final weeks, around the end of March.

Posh pets in Potomac

Good news for the furry members of your family: A Bethesda-based pet store has opened its second location at Park Potomac. Say hello to Elysiem, where you’ll find cute dog sweaters and cat toys, posh pet beds and luxe leashes along with treats and premium food. There’s a grooming salon on-site, and owner John McNeal tells us he’ll soon be offering delivery and live pet events. You’ll find Elysiem across the street from the Yirasai sushi restaurant, just down the sidewalk from Love Couture Bridal.

New in Potomac Village

Here’s a sneak peek of En Sushi’s new dining room and bar, opening in the next few weeks in Potomac Village. This is an expansion of the existing restaurant, which has taken over the former Big Wheel Bikes space next door. The new area will include a full bar specializing in saki and signature cocktails. More on that in our Aug. 18th edition. For more on the local sushi scene, click here.

Man with "Open" sign

A year of rebuilding

For our local retail and restaurant scene, 2022 was a year of rebuilding. Some longtime businesses made it through the height of the pandemic, only to shut down after the worst was over. A new crop of boutiques appeared on the scene, offering clothes and accessories to celebrate the return of festive events. New restaurants opened with diverse cuisines, from Greek to Lebanese to Salvadoran to Italian. We’ve chronicled the highlights here, with links to fill in the blanks on any stories you might have missed.

Mall on the move

Westfield Montgomery mall lost quite a few businesses this year, but it gained even more. Let’s start with the restaurants:

  • The biggest news, last March, was the long-awaited arrival of Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana.
  • Next was all-day breakfast concept Butter Me Up, which opened in the former Aroma space. Its sister restaurant, HalfSmoke, soon arrived in the Dining Terrace with a bar and a boardwalk-style menu.
  • Greek Aroma, in the long-empty former Beefsteak space, is one of three new halal eateries that opened in our area this year.
  • Suki Hana took over the long-closed Sarku sushi kiosk.
  • Malia’s Kitchen is earning kudos for its soul food in a space that’s been home to three different restaurants this year. It was preceded by the short-lived Lazzaro’s Italian Deli, and Big Al’s Subs before that.
  • DQ/Orange Julius, a beloved spot for many local families, closed its doors at the mall after 20 years. So did the Moorenko’s ice cream kiosk.
  • District Falafel, a food truck-turned brick-and-mortar eatery, took over the onetime Fu Shing space outside the mall. Its menu is also halal.

A half-dozen shops closed their doors at the mall this year: Michael Kors, Amazon 4-Star, Vera Bradley, Ivyees Everything Honey, Sports Nation and longtime local boutique Patrizia Luca.

But many more retailers opened:

  • A new Purple mattress store took over the onetime Microsoft space.
  • Psycho Bunny is a men’s store known for its colorful polo shirts and skull-and-crossbones logo.
  • Sayki is a Turkish chain specializing in men’s business attire.
  • De Clichy is a trendy men’s retailer from Hyattsville.
  • Kickz carries rare and collectible shoes and jerseys.
  • A Beautiful Closet is a D.C.-based women’s boutique.
  • Fangyán showcases young Asian designers.
  • Papaya Clothing is a fast-fashion retailer that just opened its doors.
  • Lovisa is a piercing/jewelry store that’s about to open.
  • And for the kids: Alex Baby & Toys is the first location of a new chain; Toys R Us opened a store-within-a-store inside Macy’s; and Squishable opened over the holidays.

Last but not least: Last spring, the former ArcLight Cinema also made a comeback as AMC Montgomery 16.

Nourished + Well

Pike & Rose continues to grow

This was also a big year for Pike & Rose:

  • The spa inside the Canopy Hotel, originally a Red Door and later known as Mynd Spa, reopened under a new brand: Privai Spa + Salon.
  • Two new eyeglass stores — Lenscrafters and Warby Parker — both joined the lineup last summer.
  • There were three newcomers on the restaurant scene: southern fried chicken chain Roaming Rooster; smoothie/juice shop South Block; and Hello Betty, serving seafood and cocktails at the Canopy Hotel.
  • Six-year-old Owen’s Ordinary just completed a transformation. Its patio and adjacent dining room rebranded as Owen’s Tavern & Grill, while the inside dining room took on a new identity: Caruso’s Grocery, serving classic Italian food.
Shin Orthodontics

A year of change for Potomac and Cabin John

Cabin John Village continued its physical transformation this year — completing its long-awaited cut-through, losing several businesses and welcoming several others:

  • Baskin Robbins closed its doors and was a replaced by a locally owned ice cream shop, The Scoop.
  • Goldberg’s Bagels also exited, and will be replaced by Capo Deli.
  • Irish restaurant Lahinch, which departed last spring, will eventually be replaced by Augie’s Mussel House and Beer Garden.
  • Newcomer The Pretzel Bakery, expanding from D.C., opened its doors in April. And their breakfast sandwiches are good enough to make our Store Reporter Favorites list.
  • French bakery Boulangerie Christophe, also expanding from D.C., arrived in May.
  • Salad chain Chopt is now building out the space next door.
  • The long-neglected Cabin John mini-mall is also getting some new restaurants: sushi spot Kema by Kenaki  and pizzeria and bar Colony Grill.

Park Potomac welcomed two new Asian restaurants:

  • Yirasai Sushi relocated from Westbard shopping center to the former Elevation Burger space.
  • Pama Thai, from the owners of Kruba in D.C., opened in the former Wine Harvest space.

And elsewhere in Potomac, the historic Normandie Farm restaurant closed its doors after nearly a century in business. Chef/owner Cary Prokos ended his 39-year run, selling the property to a D.C. company whose plans have not been fully revealed.

Luxury GoRound

Rockville restaurant scene

A half-dozen longtime Rockville restaurants closed their doors this year, including three Italian eateries:

  • Amici Miei, which spent 13 years at Potomac Woods Plaza before relocating to downtown Rockville, went dark in January.
  • Another Italian restaurant, Baronessa, closed its doors in May.
  • Amalfi Ristorante Italian was going to close, but it was sold instead to the owner of Chef Tony’s. It will reopen soon with a new name and a revised menu.
  • Miller’s Ale House exited after a decade-long run.
  • The Woodside Deli closed down after 12 years.
  • Peruvian restaurant La Limeña went dark despite 15 years of great reviews.
  • Fast-food seafood spot Slapfish shut down at Montrose Crossing.
  • Eerkin’s Uyghur Cuisine closed its doors. (But it’s making a comeback nearby. More on that next week.)
  • Dessert spots Snowbots and Bambū Cafe also departed.

But we also gained a couple of new restaurants on Rockville Pike:

  • Chicken-and-waffle chain Hangry Joe’s opened on the Pike as well as the Travilah Square shopping center.
  • Salvadoran eatery Pupuseria Mamá Emilia debuted at Ritchie Center.
  • Naz’s Halal opened at the Edmonston Crossing shopping center.
  • The recently closed Slapfish will be replaced by Rasa, a fast-casual Indian chain that’s making its first move into Maryland.
Wintergreen Plaza

Rockville shopping

A number of new stores, from large discount chains to small boutiques, also opened their doors in Rockville this year:

  • Congressional Plaza lost Loft but welcomed two major discount stores: J. Crew Factory and Dick’s Warehouse Sale.
  • Across the street, Montrose Crossing lured two even larger discount stores: Burlington (in the former Barnes & Noble space) and HomeSense (replacing A.C. Moore).
  • Federal Plaza is now home to three boutiques: dd’s Closet, selling clothes and jewelry from India; Bonday, offering clothing, accessories and gift baskets from all over the world; and Ibhana, relocating from its longtime home at Potomac Woods Plaza.
  • The Persiano furniture business has expanded its presence on the Pike, taking over the space that was previously occupied by Danker Furniture.
  • Also new is Ebisu, a Japanese variety store that’s doubled in size since it opened last spring.
  • And not far from Rockville Pike, the White Flint Plaza welcomed two new tenants: discount supermarket Aldi and Maryland’s first PGA Tour Superstore.
  • The new Twinbrook Quarter development finally started taking shape on Rockville Pike, but anchor Wegmans told us it won’t arrive until 2025.

Elsewhere in Rockville, Federal Realty sold the struggling Rockville Town Square to a Canadian firm that already owned its apartment buildings. A couple of new eateries joined the Square this year: Spanish restaurant El Mercat Bar de Tapas, pan-African restaurat Èkó House, and Latin American restaurant Kumbia. But the new owners tell us they will be looking for more non-restaurant tenants.

Another property that changed hands this year was The Shops at Congressional Village. The Rockville Pike center was sold to an investment group that plans to fill it with international stores and restaurants.

Pama Thai

New Thai to try

Pama Thai, a new venture from the owners of Kruba in D.C., opened its doors this week at Park Potomac. Specialties include clay pot shrimp, pineapple fried rice, crispy duck and a half-dozen different curry dishes. Pama Thai is the successor to Wine Harvest, which closed its doors at the end of 2020. You’ll find it next to Harris Teeter, a few doors down from the recently opened Yirasai Sushi.

Vera Bradley packs its bags

The Vera Bradley store, known for its quilted bags and colorful patterned travel accessories, has closed its doors after a decade-long run at Westfield Montgomery mall. It’s unusual for a retailer to exit just before the holiday shopping season, but a rep tells us the company opted not to renew its lease and won’t be opening elsewhere in Montgomery County. Vera Bradley products can still be found at some local Hallmark locations, and the company continues to operate its own stores in Columbia, Towson, Annapolis and National Harbor.

New Gregorio’s, falafel & soul food, Rockville deli closes

August 4, 2022 By Store Reporter 1 Comment

Gregorio's

Latest on the new Gregorio's

Gregorio’s is finally moving forward on its newest location at Park Potomac, where it will start renovating the former Sugo space this fall. “Everything’s in motion and we should be open around January,” says Chris Fargiano, manager of the popular Italian restaurant. “There will be lots of cosmetic changes, and we’re making the bar our own with a really nice new wine program.” The Park Potomac location will be the fourth for Gregorio’s, joining the ones in Reston, Bethesda and Cabin John Village.

District Falafel

Falafel & soul food at the mall

Two D.C. area food trucks are setting up shop at Westfield Montgomery mall, opening their first brick-and-mortar locations in the next few months. District Falafel, offering salads, wraps, shawarma and gyros, is taking over the onetime Fu Shing space at Westlake Crossing. And Malia’s Kitchen, serving up a soul-food and seafood menu of fried chicken, pulled pork, hush puppies, crab cakes and collard greens, is taking over the Dining Terrace space next to McDonald’s. This will be the fourth eatery to occupy that spot in the past few years, following the brief runs of Patisserie Manuel, Big Al’s Subs and Lazzaro’s Italian Deli.

Woodside Deli

Woodside Deli winds down

Woodside Deli has closed its doors after a 12-year run on North Washington Street in downtown Rockville. Owners attributed the closing to pandemic problems, including supply chain issues, rent increases and staffing shortages. Woodside’s original location in Silver Spring, which dates back to 1947, went dark in 2019. A third Woodside Deli in Germantown is still in business, but that restaurant is under different ownership.

Mall movie theater update, two new sushi spots, hello Pama Thai & goodbye Snowbots

June 9, 2022 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

AMC Montgomery

Mall movie makeover on hold

With the summer movie season already starting to roll out, the AMC theater at Westfield Montgomery mall will have to wait a bit longer for its facelift. The former ArcLight Cinema, which reopened in March after two years of darkness, is supposed to be in line for a new lobby, recliner seats and other much-needed upgrades. But now we’re told those changes won’t start happening until this fall at the earliest, after films like Top Gun: Maverick, Jurassic World Dominion, Lightyear, Minions and Thor: Love and Thunder have run their course.

Suki Hana

Summer of sushi

Two new sushi spots are heading our way for summer. Suki Hana is just about to open at Westfield Montgomery mall, taking over the long-closed Sarku Sushi kiosk at the center of the Dining Terrace. And just off Rockville Pike, Sushi Toro is moving into the former Hiro Sushi space next to The Big Greek Cafe. Co-owner Andy Qiu, who also operates a couple of noodle houses in northern Virginia, says he hopes to be open by the end of June.

Pama Thai

New Thai for Park Potomac

Construction is finally beginning on the long-awaited Thai restaurant at Park Potomac. The new place will be called Pama Thai, and we’re told it’s from the owners of Kruba Thai in D.C. Pama will join fellow newcomers Yirasai Sushi, which opened in April, and the upcoming Elysiem pet shop, opening this summer.

SnowBots

Snowbots melts away

This week we say goodbye to Snowbots, the frozen dessert shop that lasted for nearly a decade at 1701 Rockville Pike. With a menu that offered everything from bubble tea and shaved ice to ice cream and “snow cream,” Snowbots faced tough competition these past few years from places like Tiger Sugar, Mr. Wish, Bambu, Gong Cha, Bubble Tea Cafe and Kung Fu Tea.

New owners for Normandie Farm, pet store for Park Potomac, goodbye to two Rockville restaurants

May 5, 2022 By Store Reporter 1 Comment

Normandie Farm

What's next for Normandie Farm

Normandie Farm, a landmark in Potomac since 1931, will go dark at the end of June when owner Cary Prokos hangs up his chef’s hat. But the closing actually marks a new beginning for this historic restaurant: Its new owner is H2 Collective, a family-run business that operates a dozen D.C.-area restaurants, bars and lounges. At the helm are brothers Eric and Ian Hilton, whose portfolio includes the Eighteenth Street Lounge in D.C., Chez Billy Sud in Georgetown, and a beer and wine garden outside the Kennedy Center. In fact, there’s been talk that Normandie Farm might get a beer and wine garden of its own — but Prokos says he’s not quite sure what the plan is going to be. After 39 years working at the restaurant, he says, it’s a relief to let someone else make those decisions. “I do know that these new owners are going to invest a lot of money,” Prokos tells Store Reporter. “They’ll make sure that Normandie Farm goes on for many years to come.”

Pampered pets at Park Potomac

Upscale pet store Elysiem is set to open next month at Park Potomac, just down the sidewalk from Love Couture Bridal and across the street from the newly opened Yirasai Sushi. This will be the second location for owner John McNeal, who also operates an Elysiem in Bethesda. “I like to think that I’m bringing a little luxury to this business,” McNeal says. “It’s going to be a real boutique with high-end dog jackets and raincoats, leashes and collars, a grooming salon, and premier dog food that you can’t get in the grocery store.” He’s also planning a busy schedule of events, from single-breed play dates to wine-infused “yappy hours” to dog portrait painting classes.

Goodbye to two Rockville restaurants

Baronessa Italian Restaurant, a foodie favorite on East Gude Drive in Rockville, has closed its doors after a five-year run under former D.C. chef Angel Mendoza. Elsewhere on Rockville’s Italian restaurant scene, it looks like Amalfi on Wilkins Avenue is also on its way out. The 45-year-old restaurant is up for sale, and owners say it will close in a couple of months if a buyer can’t be found.

Pretzels & Carmen’s at Cabin John, sushi at Park Potomac, Burlington opens on the Pike

April 21, 2022 By Store Reporter 3 Comments

Pretzels are the new bagels at Cabin John

The Pretzel Bakery has opened its doors at Cabin John Village, offering snacks and breakfast fare that might help make up for the recent losses of Goldberg’s and Baskin Robbins. The menu features three kinds of pretzels — salty, sweet and everything — to which you can add cheese, mustard, Nutella and other toppings. But you’ll also find breakfast sliders, pretzel dogs, calzones, Nutella-filled “pretzel bombs,” La Colombe coffee, lemonade and hot chocolate. And soon: Italian ices from local favorite Carmen’s. “This partnership was a natural fit for us,” says Pretzel Bakery owner Sean Haney, who created the concept ten years ago in D.C. “When I was a kid in Philadelphia,” he says, “there were all these ice cream trucks selling ‘water ice’ and soft pretzels. My business is based on those memories. That’s what I’m trying to create here.”

First look at Cabin John’s French bakery, Park Potomac’s sushi spot and the Pike & Rose bar-on-a-boat

Boulangerie Christophe

Fresh out of the oven at Cabin John

It’s almost time to say bonjour to Boulangerie Christophe at Cabin John Village. The French bakery, expanding here from its original location in Georgetown, will be open by early May in the brand new building across from the Cabin John mini-mall. The menu will feature baguettes, croissants, quiche, cakes, pies, tarts and pastries — all baked on site, along with freshly prepared salads, sandwiches, omelets, crêpes and waffles. And to drink: wine, beer and Illy coffee. “This location has a wood oven, so the bread here will be even better than the bread in Georgetown,” says co-owner Didier Martin. For those who prefer to stay away from such high-calorie fare, we have some other big news: Chopt has been confirmed as the tenant moving in next door.

Hello Betty drops anchor at Pike & Rose

Newly open at Pike & Rose: Hello Betty, serving up seafood and California-inspired fare on the third floor of the Canopy hotel. The boat-turned-cocktail bar (shown here) is still a work in progress on the patio. But the indoor portion is now up and running, with colorful decor and a birds-eye view of the Bark Social dog park. (For photos of the interior, check out Store Reporter on Facebook and Instagram). You can visit Hello Betty via its main entrance in the Canopy’s lobby, or look for the back-door entrance on the sidewalk next to Uniqlo.

New on the sushi scene

Yirasai Sushi is just about ready to open at Park Potomac, where it’s been under construction since last fall in the former Elevation Burger space. Yirasai, relocating from its longtime home in Bethesda, is the first of three new sushi restaurants heading to our area. Next up are Raku, opening a new location at the Wildwood shopping center; and a new concept from the owners of Kenaki in Kentlands, soon to begin its buildout at Cabin John Village. Watch Store Reporter for updates on both of those.

Spring closings at the mall

Westfield Montgomery mall is undergoing a bit of spring cleaning, with two store closings in the past few weeks and another on the way. The Michael Kors store, whose parent company is reducing its brick-and-mortar footprint, went dark at the end of March. The Amazon 4-Star store is also gone, after the e-commerce behemoth pulled the plug on this short-lived concept. And Patrizia Luca, the locally owned boutique that has moved around the mall these past seven years, will soon be closing for good.
