Spring crop: Three new boutiques

March 23, 2023 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

2 the 9s

Get the party started

2 the 9s, a new boutique specializing in teen formalwear, has opened in the former Stuart Weitzmann space at Westfield Montgomery mall. This is the first Montgomery County venture for owner SoonRae Pinkos, who carries long and short gowns for proms, quinceañeras, mitzvahs and sweet sixteens. “There just aren’t many stores now where girls can try on their special occasion dresses in person,” Pinkos says. “When they order things online, they often don’t fit and the girls get frustrated. Here we can show what looks pretty on them, and hopefully they’ll find their dream dress.” After 30-plus years selling wedding clothes, Pinkos says working with teens is a refreshing change. “You make a lot of money on weddings, but it’s so much stress,” she says. “When you’re working with teens, they’re in the best shape of their lives, they have happy spirits, and they’re happily spending their parents’ money.”

Melashops

New spot for South Asian shopping

Melashops, a colorful marketplace of South Asian clothing and jewelry, is joining the lineup at Westfield Montgomery mall. The store specializes in wedding attire, formal wear, everyday clothing and jewelry from India and Pakistan, plus a selection of items from Bangladesh, Turkey and Afghanistan. Owner Bobby Mozumder, who is relocating from Lakeforest Mall, says his family has always been in the fashion business. In fact, his mother used to run Roohi’s Sari Boutique in Rockville. At the new store, he says, “We want everybody to come and shop, not just a South Asian audience. Our silver jewelry, for example, looks great with jeans and a fancy blouse. You don’t have to be South Asian to buy it. You can buy it because it’s beautiful.” The shop will open April 1st in the mall’s Nordstrom wing, next to the upcoming Arhaus furniture store.

Le Bonday

Designer deals in Rockville

Bonday, the gift boutique that opened last summer at Rockville’s Federal Plaza, is relocating to Congressional Plaza with a new name and a new focus on designer goods. “We’re going to be all high-end, both new and pre-owned,” says owner Felicity Tchoufa, who will call her new store Le Bonday. “We’ll have clothing, bags, accessories and jewelry from all the famous designers: Gucci, Chanel, Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace and Tori Birch. And we’ll also be introducing my own brand, Felicity T.” Doors are expected to open in May or June, in the space recently vacated by Loyal Companion. In the meantime, everything in the original store is on sale.

Golfdom

Golf store swings into Rockville

Golfdom, an all-things-golf store from Tysons Corner, is opening its first Maryland location on Rockville Pike. Plans call for a spring debut in the former Pier 1 space at Pike Center, most recently occupied by Spirit Halloween. The Washington Business Journal was first to report the news. This will be the second golf store to open in our area in less than a year, following the debut of PGA Tour Superstore at White Flint Plaza last July.

Time to stock up

The county-owned beer, wine and liquor store at Montrose Crossing reopens tomorrow (Jan. 27th) after a six-month-long makeover. Now operating under the name Oak Barrel & Vine, the store will have 25 percent more shelf space, a dedicated tasting room, and a new focus on spirits and local products. A selection of limited-release items will be available throughout the opening weekend, along with tastings of local beer and spirits. The Rockville Pike store is the second in the county to convert to the Oak Barrel & Vine concept; the first opened in 2021 at Cabin John Village, and third is now under construction in Gaithersburg.

New fitness options for Potomac and Rockville

Heading to Potomac Village this spring: 1to1 Fitness, a personal training company that’s taking over the former Bella Moda Salon space next to Renato’s. The 36-year-old business is opening more locations in the suburbs, says president Douglas Vasiliadis, now that so many of its clients have left their D.C. offices to work from home. “We decided it made sense to locate where people are living instead of where they’re working,” he says. The Planet Fitness gym in Rockville also has made a move, leaving its longtime home at Federal Plaza for a new space in the former Gold’s Gym building on Randolph Road. Gold’s Gym closed that location at the end of 2019.

Man with "Open" sign

A year of rebuilding

For our local retail and restaurant scene, 2022 was a year of rebuilding. Some longtime businesses made it through the height of the pandemic, only to shut down after the worst was over. A new crop of boutiques appeared on the scene, offering clothes and accessories to celebrate the return of festive events. New restaurants opened with diverse cuisines, from Greek to Lebanese to Salvadoran to Italian. We’ve chronicled the highlights here, with links to fill in the blanks on any stories you might have missed.

Mall on the move

Westfield Montgomery mall lost quite a few businesses this year, but it gained even more. Let’s start with the restaurants:

  • The biggest news, last March, was the long-awaited arrival of Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana.
  • Next was all-day breakfast concept Butter Me Up, which opened in the former Aroma space. Its sister restaurant, HalfSmoke, soon arrived in the Dining Terrace with a bar and a boardwalk-style menu.
  • Greek Aroma, in the long-empty former Beefsteak space, is one of three new halal eateries that opened in our area this year.
  • Suki Hana took over the long-closed Sarku sushi kiosk.
  • Malia’s Kitchen is earning kudos for its soul food in a space that’s been home to three different restaurants this year. It was preceded by the short-lived Lazzaro’s Italian Deli, and Big Al’s Subs before that.
  • DQ/Orange Julius, a beloved spot for many local families, closed its doors at the mall after 20 years. So did the Moorenko’s ice cream kiosk.
  • District Falafel, a food truck-turned brick-and-mortar eatery, took over the onetime Fu Shing space outside the mall. Its menu is also halal.

A half-dozen shops closed their doors at the mall this year: Michael Kors, Amazon 4-Star, Vera Bradley, Ivyees Everything Honey, Sports Nation and longtime local boutique Patrizia Luca.

But many more retailers opened:

  • A new Purple mattress store took over the onetime Microsoft space.
  • Psycho Bunny is a men’s store known for its colorful polo shirts and skull-and-crossbones logo.
  • Sayki is a Turkish chain specializing in men’s business attire.
  • De Clichy is a trendy men’s retailer from Hyattsville.
  • Kickz carries rare and collectible shoes and jerseys.
  • A Beautiful Closet is a D.C.-based women’s boutique.
  • Fangyán showcases young Asian designers.
  • Papaya Clothing is a fast-fashion retailer that just opened its doors.
  • Lovisa is a piercing/jewelry store that’s about to open.
  • And for the kids: Alex Baby & Toys is the first location of a new chain; Toys R Us opened a store-within-a-store inside Macy’s; and Squishable opened over the holidays.

Last but not least: Last spring, the former ArcLight Cinema also made a comeback as AMC Montgomery 16.

Nourished + Well

Pike & Rose continues to grow

This was also a big year for Pike & Rose:

  • The spa inside the Canopy Hotel, originally a Red Door and later known as Mynd Spa, reopened under a new brand: Privai Spa + Salon.
  • Two new eyeglass stores — Lenscrafters and Warby Parker — both joined the lineup last summer.
  • There were three newcomers on the restaurant scene: southern fried chicken chain Roaming Rooster; smoothie/juice shop South Block; and Hello Betty, serving seafood and cocktails at the Canopy Hotel.
  • Six-year-old Owen’s Ordinary just completed a transformation. Its patio and adjacent dining room rebranded as Owen’s Tavern & Grill, while the inside dining room took on a new identity: Caruso’s Grocery, serving classic Italian food.
Shin Orthodontics

A year of change for Potomac and Cabin John

Cabin John Village continued its physical transformation this year — completing its long-awaited cut-through, losing several businesses and welcoming several others:

  • Baskin Robbins closed its doors and was a replaced by a locally owned ice cream shop, The Scoop.
  • Goldberg’s Bagels also exited, and will be replaced by Capo Deli.
  • Irish restaurant Lahinch, which departed last spring, will eventually be replaced by Augie’s Mussel House and Beer Garden.
  • Newcomer The Pretzel Bakery, expanding from D.C., opened its doors in April. And their breakfast sandwiches are good enough to make our Store Reporter Favorites list.
  • French bakery Boulangerie Christophe, also expanding from D.C., arrived in May.
  • Salad chain Chopt is now building out the space next door.
  • The long-neglected Cabin John mini-mall is also getting some new restaurants: sushi spot Kema by Kenaki  and pizzeria and bar Colony Grill.

Park Potomac welcomed two new Asian restaurants:

  • Yirasai Sushi relocated from Westbard shopping center to the former Elevation Burger space.
  • Pama Thai, from the owners of Kruba in D.C., opened in the former Wine Harvest space.

And elsewhere in Potomac, the historic Normandie Farm restaurant closed its doors after nearly a century in business. Chef/owner Cary Prokos ended his 39-year run, selling the property to a D.C. company whose plans have not been fully revealed.

Luxury GoRound

Rockville restaurant scene

A half-dozen longtime Rockville restaurants closed their doors this year, including three Italian eateries:

  • Amici Miei, which spent 13 years at Potomac Woods Plaza before relocating to downtown Rockville, went dark in January.
  • Another Italian restaurant, Baronessa, closed its doors in May.
  • Amalfi Ristorante Italian was going to close, but it was sold instead to the owner of Chef Tony’s. It will reopen soon with a new name and a revised menu.
  • Miller’s Ale House exited after a decade-long run.
  • The Woodside Deli closed down after 12 years.
  • Peruvian restaurant La Limeña went dark despite 15 years of great reviews.
  • Fast-food seafood spot Slapfish shut down at Montrose Crossing.
  • Eerkin’s Uyghur Cuisine closed its doors. (But it’s making a comeback nearby. More on that next week.)
  • Dessert spots Snowbots and Bambū Cafe also departed.

But we also gained a couple of new restaurants on Rockville Pike:

  • Chicken-and-waffle chain Hangry Joe’s opened on the Pike as well as the Travilah Square shopping center.
  • Salvadoran eatery Pupuseria Mamá Emilia debuted at Ritchie Center.
  • Naz’s Halal opened at the Edmonston Crossing shopping center.
  • The recently closed Slapfish will be replaced by Rasa, a fast-casual Indian chain that’s making its first move into Maryland.
Wintergreen Plaza

Rockville shopping

A number of new stores, from large discount chains to small boutiques, also opened their doors in Rockville this year:

  • Congressional Plaza lost Loft but welcomed two major discount stores: J. Crew Factory and Dick’s Warehouse Sale.
  • Across the street, Montrose Crossing lured two even larger discount stores: Burlington (in the former Barnes & Noble space) and HomeSense (replacing A.C. Moore).
  • Federal Plaza is now home to three boutiques: dd’s Closet, selling clothes and jewelry from India; Bonday, offering clothing, accessories and gift baskets from all over the world; and Ibhana, relocating from its longtime home at Potomac Woods Plaza.
  • The Persiano furniture business has expanded its presence on the Pike, taking over the space that was previously occupied by Danker Furniture.
  • Also new is Ebisu, a Japanese variety store that’s doubled in size since it opened last spring.
  • And not far from Rockville Pike, the White Flint Plaza welcomed two new tenants: discount supermarket Aldi and Maryland’s first PGA Tour Superstore.
  • The new Twinbrook Quarter development finally started taking shape on Rockville Pike, but anchor Wegmans told us it won’t arrive until 2025.

Elsewhere in Rockville, Federal Realty sold the struggling Rockville Town Square to a Canadian firm that already owned its apartment buildings. A couple of new eateries joined the Square this year: Spanish restaurant El Mercat Bar de Tapas, pan-African restaurat Èkó House, and Latin American restaurant Kumbia. But the new owners tell us they will be looking for more non-restaurant tenants.

Another property that changed hands this year was The Shops at Congressional Village. The Rockville Pike center was sold to an investment group that plans to fill it with international stores and restaurants.

Hello Toys R Us, goodbye Sport & Health — plus a store that will knock your socks off

Toys R Us

The toys are back in town

This week we welcome back Geoffrey Giraffe, the Toys R Us mascot who’s waiting for your kids on this Instagram-ready bench at Macy’s. After closing down its physical locations five years ago, Toys R Us is returning to brick-and-mortar via a new partnership with the department store. You’ll find a pretty robust selection in the Macy’s at Westfield Montgomery mall, including Legos, action figures, dolls and games. This is the second new toy store to open at the mall in the past six months, joining newcomer Alex Baby & Toys. (For more on that, click here.)

New name for Sport & Health, new digs for Planet Fitness

Say goodbye to the Sport & Health gym chain, which will disappear next month after a merger with sister company Onelife Fitness. As of Nov. 1st, Sport & Health members at Pike & Rose will be able to work out at all Onelife locations in the DMV, including the one on Research Boulevard in Rockville. The company tell us current members will not need to upgrade their passes, and they’ll also be granted privileges at some out-of-state locations. In other gym news: Planet Fitness is renovating the former Gold’s Gym on Randolph Road, where it’s expected to open its doors sometime this winter. When this new location arrives, Planet Fitness will exit its longtime space on Rockville Pike.

A store that will knock your socks off

Fun new place to start your holiday shopping at Westfield Montgomery mall: Socks To Be You, now open on the upper level next to Zumiez. The socks, made in Turkey and priced at three for $20, are covered with stripes, prints, cartoon characters, catch phrases and plenty of dad jokes. Next up for the mall: Creative Outlets, a crafting space opening near Macy’s Home.

Falafel, FAO Schwarz, Pier 1 and Tuesday Morning

September 15, 2022 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

District Falafel

Halal at the mall

D.C. food truck District Falafel will open next month outside Westfield Montgomery mall, where owner Mohammad Badah is taking over the onetime Fu Shing space near Corner Bakery and Ledo Pizza. This will be the first brick-and-mortar location for the seven-year-old business. “During the pandemic, I brought my food truck to this area and the community really supported me,” Badah says. “So when I decided to open a local family restaurant, I wanted to do it here.” While the food truck focused on falafel, lamb and chicken gyros, the new place will offer a more expansive menu with salads, hummus, shawarma, vegetarian wraps, kofta, baklava and gluten-free items. The restaurant will be halal, so there won’t be any booze. This will be the second new halal restaurant to open in our area this year, following the recent debut of Naz’s on Rockville Pike.

FAO Schwarz

FAO Schwarz on the way

If you’re still nostalgic for the glory days of FAO Schwarz, we’re about to give you a whole new reason to shop at Target. Not to be outdone by the recent partnership between Macy’s and Toys R Us, the historic toy store brand and the discount retailer have just teamed up for an exclusive deal of their own. Look for FAO boutiques inside Target stores this holiday season, with live demos and and iconic gifts like ride-on trains, piano mats, snow globes, toy soldiers and 160th-anniversary teddy bears.

New deal for Tuesday Morning

Tuesday Morning, the discount retailer that emerged from bankruptcy last year, has secured financing from an investment group that likes to buy up failed businesses. This means that Tuesday Morning is now controlled by the same folks who own what’s left of Linens ‘n Things, Radio Shack and Pier 1. The partnership will offer a comeback of sorts for Pier 1, which closed all its physical stores in 2020 and can now start selling its goods through Tuesday Morning. So if you’ve missed all those papasan chairs, pillows and votive candles, it’s likely you’ll be seeing them back in Rockville very soon.

PGA Tour Superstore

PGA on the way this weekend

Saturday (July 30th) is opening day for the new PGA Tour Superstore at White Flint Plaza, next door to Aldi in the space that once belonged to Shoppers Food Warehouse. This store is the first of its kind in Maryland, with a deep selection of clothes, shoes and equipment for golf, tennis and pickleball. You also can sign up for lessons and custom club fittings, get your equipment repaired, and try out the store’s high-tech practice bays that analyze your swing. Giveaways will be going on all weekend, including a chance to win iron sets, drivers, wedges and putters. For more photos, check out Store Reporter on Facebook and Instagram.

All-new shopping on the Pike

All of a sudden, Rockville’s Federal Plaza has become a destination for locally owned boutiques. dd’s Closet, now open near Trader Joe’s, is brimming with gowns, bags, shoes, textiles and jewelry direct from India. Over near Mamma Lucia, Bonday Gift Boutique puts together custom gift baskets and carries an array of clothes, tote bags, home decor and artwork primarily from Africa. Joining the lineup in August is the Ibhana boutique, relocating from Potomac Woods Plaza. More on that in our July 21st edition.

HalfSmoke

Boardwalk & booze at the mall

This summer has been busy with comings and goings in the Dining Terrace at Westfield Montgomery mall. The newest addition is HalfSmoke, now open for business in the kiosk that once belonged to Cold Stone Creamery. HalfSmoke, originally envisioned as a sausage-and-fried chicken kiosk, has expanded its menu to embrace a boardwalk theme: crabmeat fries, tater tots, donuts, funnel cakes, candy, gelato, milkshakes (boozy and non-boozy) and a full bar with margaritas, mojitos and whiskey sours. Based in D.C. with plans to expand to Rockville Town Square, HalfSmoke is a sister to the mall’s recently opened breakfast spot Butter Me Up. Meanwhile, just across the Dining Terrace, the short-lived Lazzaro’s Italian Deli closed its doors after just two months.

Baskin Robbins, Village Yoga & Toys R Us on the comeback trail

July 21, 2022 By Store Reporter 3 Comments

Ice cream in, Ibhana out at Potomac Woods

Five months after Baskin Robbins closed its doors at Cabin John Village, the ice cream shop has finalized plans for its new location at Potomac Woods Plaza. It’s taking the space next door to Walgreens, displacing the seven-year-old Ibhana clothing boutique. “We’re finally moving,” says Ibhana owner Meena Tharmaratnam, who has signed a new lease across from Panera on the back side of Rockville’s Federal Plaza. She hopes to vacate her current space on Aug. 9 and reopen in Rockville by the 15th. As for Baskin Robbins, owners tell us they plan to start construction immediately.

New moves for Village Yoga

Just weeks after Village Yoga closed its doors, a group of students and instructors are practicing together again in a new space. Potomac Flow Yoga, a newly created nonprofit, offers monthly memberships and drop-in classes at the Potomac United Methodist Church on Falls Road. “A couple of our amazing students really took the bull by the horns and decided to create this co-op,” says Helene Glick, one of six former Village Yoga instructors who are participating. “We’re not doing this to make a profit,” Glick says, “It’s an exciting new concept.” Potomac Flow Yoga doesn’t have a working website yet, but you can contact them via Facebook.

Wegmans update, new development on Rockville Pike, HomeSense sets a date

June 2, 2022 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Future Wegmans site at Twinbrook Plaza

Latest on Rockville's Wegmans

Finally we’re seeing some real progress at Rockville’s Twinbrook Quarter commercial/residential development, future home of the much-anticipated Wegmans grocery store. Cranes have been out in full force on this stretch of Rockville Pike, where the wrecking ball soon will demolish empty buildings that once belonged to Pizza CS, Fuddruckers, Toosso, the Salvation Army Family Store and the Sheffield/Danker furniture warehouse. Sadly though, we’re still a long way off from welcoming Wegmans to Rockville — so long, in fact, that the grocery chain won’t even speculate about a potential opening date. As things stand now, a Wegmans spokesman tells us this store probably won’t even get started on construction until 2024.

Federal Plaza and T.J. Maxx

Another parking lot on its way out

In other Rockville development news, it looks like this quiet parking lot behind Federal Plaza will eventually be home to a pair of high-rise residential towers. Owner Federal Realty, which developed Pike & Rose, Rockville Town Square and countless other mixed-use properties in Montgomery County, has sketched out plans for new housing and street-level retail on this lot. The timeline is uncertain, and it’s also unclear how this project will affect rear-facing tenants like T.J. Maxx and Micro Center. But the Panera in the parking lot would definitely have to go.

HomeSense

Home stretch for HomeSense

HomeSense is set to open June 16th at Rockville’s Montrose Crossing, where it’s been under construction since last winter in the former A.C. Moore space. The T.J. Maxx-owned retail chain is similar to sister store HomeGoods, with a vast selection of kitchenware, pillows, rugs, wall art, decor and textiles. But while HomeGoods typically offers random pieces of furniture, HomeSense sells complete matched sets as well as lighting, bathroom fixtures, paint, wallpaper and tools.

Butter Me Up and new boutique at the mall, comings and goings on Rockville Pike

April 14, 2022 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Butter Me Up

All-day breakfast & photo ops

This instantly Instagrammable spot is the welcome lounge for Butter Me Up, the all-day breakfast joint that’s moving into the former Aroma space at Westfield Montgomery mall. This will be the first brick-and-mortar restaurant for Butter Me Up, which currently exists as a takeout-only “ghost kitchen” inside D.C. eatery HalfSmoke. On the menu: buttermilk biscuits, fried chicken, eggs, pancakes,  juices and coffee. Opening should happen in the next few weeks. Owner Andre McCain is also bringing HalfSmoke to the mall’s Dining Terrace. More on that in our Jan. 13th edition.

D.C. clothing boutique A Beautiful Closet is expanding to Westfield Montgomery mall, opening a new location in May next to California Pizza Kitchen. This is the latest in the mall’s increasingly robust lineup of black-owned businesses, including Butter Me Up and HalfSmoke (see story above); couture and bridal boutique Anya by Vivien; bath and body shops Ivyees Everything Honey and BrookieGirl; Jamaican eatery Ya Mon; and the tooth whitening business Minte.

Comings & goings on the Pike

Rockville’s Federal Plaza, home of Trader Joe’s and T.J. Maxx, is welcoming back vitamin shop GNC after an absence of several years. This shopping center has remained remarkably intact throughout the pandemic, losing only a couple of tenants (Chuy’s, Na Ohana and Carter’s) while gaining Crumbl Cookies, Tiger Sugar, Phenix Salon Suites and now GNC.

More sushi for Potomac, openings and closings on Rockville Pike & more

November 3, 2021 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Potomac will be swimming in sushi

Not one but two new sushi restaurants will be rolling into Potomac next year. Yirasai, relocating from its longtime home in Bethesda, is aiming for a January debut in the former Elevation Burger space at Park Potomac. And as we reported last August, the highly anticipated Kema — from the owners of Kenaki in Kentlands — will debut a few months later at the Cabin John mini-mall. This will be a welcome change from recent years, when En Bistro in the Village has basically had the entire Potomac sushi market to itself.

Moxie 1

Pure Barre to the Pike

Pure Barre is the latest gym to sign a lease at Rockville’s Congressional Plaza, joining Orangetheory Fitness and the soon-to-open CorePower Yoga in the spot that’s been dubbed “FITRow.” You’ll find all three between Barnes & Noble and The Container Store, sharing the second-floor space that once housed a Thomasville furniture store. Interested in joining all of them? You’ll have to spend a bundle. Each studio is independently owned, and they won’t be offering joint memberships.

Americana at auction

A fine selection of early American art, furniture, silver, flags and paintings will be up for auction at Freeman’s next week. If you collect such pieces — or if you own some that you’re interested in selling — now is the time to get in touch with Debrah Dunner, Freeman’s D.C.-Metro area representative. Highlights of the Nov. 10th auction include parade uniforms from early presidential campaigns, rare American flags from the Civil War era, model ships, ornate silver serving pieces, and 19th century landscapes and portraits. There’s also a wide selection of period furniture in the Chippendale, Queen Anne, Federal and Classical styles. Interested in learning more? Dunner offers complimentary valuations. Email ddunner@freemansauction.com or call (301) 738-0347.

Jewelry out, stylists in on the Pike

Local jewelry store Na Ohana has exited its longtime home near Trader Joe’s on Rockville Pike, relocating to 5810 Hubbard Drive to escape a rent hike. This is the first major closing at Federal Plaza since Chuy’s departed in March 2020. This modest shopping center has remained surprising stable throughout the pandemic, adding Crumbl Cookies a year ago and Tiger Sugar this past August. Next up: Phenix Salon Suites, offering month-to-month rentals for independent stylists. It’s expected to open in mid-December in the old Five Below space above Dollar Tree.

This Thanksgiving, let Rose's do the cooking

After so many seasonal gatherings had to be canceled in 2020, this year’s Thanksgiving tables will be filled with family, friends and high expectations. The easiest way to knock their socks off: Let Rose’s at Home do the cooking. The “Big Thanksgiving Feast,” $480 delivered to your door, feeds six to eight people in the famous Rose’s Luxury tradition. You’ll get an all-natural lemon pepper turkey with gravy, plus a bounty of vegetarian, nut-free sides: charred Brussels sprouts Caesar salad, mashed Yukon gold potatoes, mushroom cornbread stuffing, green bean casserole, King Hawaiian rolls and house-made cranberry sauce with orange. The entire meal arrives chilled, with complete instructions for storage and reheating. Bonus: Your meal also includes a donation to the D.C. Food Project.
