Twenty-five restaurants and two dozen stores that won’t be back

February 18, 2021 By Store Reporter 6 Comments

Saying goodbye to some favorites

As we approach the first anniversary of pandemic-related closings, we’re taking a moment to look back at some stores and restaurants that we’ve lost along the way. The sheer size of this list is shocking — but it’s also important to remember a few key things: 1) Some of these businesses were already struggling before any of us had ever heard of the novel coronavirus. 2) Several on this list had not been open long enough to develop a loyal customer base, which might have been willing to support them through the pandemic. 3) A few longtime retailers decided that 2020 was a really great year to retire.

Westfield Montgomery mall, which was forced to close for several months last spring, has lost more businesses over the past year than any other shopping center in our area. About half of the mall’s eateries have gone dark since March 2020, along with more than a dozen chain stores: Abercrombie & Fitch, Alex & Ani, Bose, Clarks, David’s Tea, Eyebobs, GNC, Godiva, Hanna Andersson, Marmi, Microsoft, Steve Madden, The Art of Shaving and The Walking Company.

Lord & Taylor also closed up shop in 2020 (more here), as did the entire Pet Valu chain (more here) and Lucky Brand at Pike & Rose (more here).  Also gone are ABC’s & 1-2-3’s at Wintergreen Plaza, GameStop at Fallsgrove and It’Sugar at Rockville Town Square (more here). And Cabin John’s beloved Toy Castle closed its doors last summer after 41 years (more here).

On the restaurant scene, here are 25 notable losses of the past 12 months.

  • Addie’s at Park Potomac: This three-year-old reboot from Black Restaurant Group never seemed to regain the fan base of its predecessor on Rockville Pike. Most of its sister restaurants managed to survive the pandemic, but Addie’s didn’t make it. The prime corner space already has been filled by a new place: King Street Oyster Bar. More on that in our Jan. 28th edition.

  • Aroma at Westfield Montgomery mall: This popular Israeli coffee chain had a seven-year run at the mall, but it couldn’t seem to woo the crowds away from Starbucks. Aroma closed at the beginning of the pandemic and never reopened.

  • Bagel City on Rockville Pike: This beloved local landmark was originally expected to reopen for takeout, but a family health challenge made the logistics too difficult. Co-owner Stephanie Kavadoy tells us she hopes to return in the future with a smaller operation.

  • Beefsteak at Westfield Montgomery mall: José Andrés’ veggie-centric restaurant closed most of its locations during the pandemic. With popular Cava just across the aisle, Beefsteak rarely seemed to draw much of a crowd at the mall.

  • Breadsmith at Cabin John Village: This kosher and nut-free bakery, a franchise owned by locals, was a go-to in Potomac for 12 years. Owners blamed the pandemic when they closed last September.

  • Chuy’s on Rockville Pike: The Mexican chain had already announced closings just before the pandemic, shuttering its Federal Plaza location in March. In this case, coronavirus was not to blame.

  • Cold Stone Creamery at Westfield Montgomery mall: The ice cream chain had been a centerpiece of the Dining Terrace since 2015. Cold Stone closed in December.

  • CiCi’s Pizza on Rockville Pike: This longtime chain, known for its all-you-can-eat pizza buffets, was unable to survive on takeout business alone. Its parent company has since filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

  • Flower Child at Travilah Square: The two-year-old eatery closed at the beginning of the pandemic and was initially expected to reopen, but the company changed its mind. The Wildwood location, always much busier, is still in business.

  • Gumbo Ya Ya at Rockville Town Square: This locally owned eatery, offering a mashup of New Orleans-style cuisine and traditional Puerto Rican dishes, had only been open for a few months before the pandemic.

  • Gusto at Westfield Montgomery mall: This pizza and salad spot closed at the beginning of the pandemic and never returned to the Dining Terrace. Gusto eventually shuttered all its Maryland locations.

  • Honeyfish Poke at Congressional Plaza: This California-based concept was among the first local eateries to specialize in the Hawaiian-style raw fish dish. Honeyfish went dark early in the pandemic after a three-year run in Rockville.

  • La Tasca at Rockville Town Square: The Spanish-style tapas chain, one of the last original tenants at Rockville Town Square, filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy last May and closed all its locations.

  • Le Pain Quotidien at Cabin John Village: LPQ was already struggling before the pandemic, and its U.S. division filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy last May. The Cabin John and Wildwood locations both went dark, but Wildwood made a surprise comeback in late 2020. It doesn’t look like that will be happening at Cabin John.

  • Mirch Masala at Westfield Montgomery mall: The Indian restaurant spent a decade at the mall, but owner Poonam Chopra opted not to renew her lease in the current environment.

  • Möge Tee at Westfield Montgomery mall: This New York-based bubble tea chain debuted at the mall in 2019 and disappeared last spring.

  • Nantucket Reef at Traville Village Center: This Cape Cod-style eatery said it was closing “temporarily” last March. It never reopened.

  • Panera in downtown Rockville: While other Paneras have remained open throughout the pandemic — including the one at Federal Plaza — this location did not survive.

  • Pizza CS on Rockville Pike. In this case, coronavirus only accelerated a closing that would have happened a few months later. The Neapolitan-style pizzeria lost its home to a planned Wegmans-anchored redevelopment project. (More on Wegmans in our Aug. 13th edition.)

  • Poké Papa at Westfield Montgomery mall: This Hawaiian-style eatery had been in business for just six months when the pandemic began. It closed last spring and never reopened.

  • Roti at Pike & Rose: While other Pike & Rose restaurants have survived the pandemic, this Mediterranean fast-casual chain gave up early.

  • Spice 6 at Westfield Montgomery mall: This Indian fast-food chain arrived at the mall in 2018 and closed last spring. Other Spice 6 locations remain open.

  • Subway restaurants in Rockville and Potomac. The sandwich chain closed its locations at Cabin John Village and Federal Plaza. The reasons are unclear.

  • Sweetly Anchored Patisserie at Cabin John Village: This bakery continued filling cake orders while the Cabin John mini-mall was closed, but owner Lindsay Miniaci said the space was so quiet that it wasn’t worth reopening to foot traffic. She moved out last fall.

  • Thai Pavilion at Rockville Town Square: After a long run at the Square, this restaurant closed in August. It was the fifth eatery to exit the Town Square in 2020.

  • The Wine Harvest at Park Potomac: This ten-year-old restaurant and wine shop, known for its convivial atmosphere, closed its doors on New Year’s Eve. Andrew Meyrowitz, whose family also closed their Kentlands location in 2019, said it was too difficult to turn a profit in the current environment.

The return of J. Chow's

Here’s one restaurant that isn’t going away after all: It’s been a week since we wrote about the closing of J. Chow’s at Westfield Montgomery mall, and we’re happy to report that the restaurant has now reopened. J. Chow’s is something of a local institution, with a fan base dating all the way back to its days in the food court at White Flint Mall. Owners tell us those signature California Chicken Salads aren’t going anywhere.

Hello Lego, two new sweet spots, Rose’s Luxury delivered to your door

October 1, 2020 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

The lure of the Lego

Here’s a glimpse of what’s been happening inside the new Lego Store at Westfield Montgomery mall, where staffers have been furiously stocking shelves and putting together display models to get ready for this weekend’s grand opening. The store debuts Friday (Oct. 2) on the mall’s lower level, in what used to be the Sears wing. This will be the first major opening at Westfield Montgomery since the pandemic began, and hopes are high that the lure of the Lego will draw more families back to in-person shopping. For those who aren’t quite ready to step inside, a spokesman tells us to look out for a new Lego truck that will drive around our area handing out free gifts and fulfilling mobile orders.

Cookie store is fresh out of the oven

Crumbl Cookies opened its doors this week at Rockville’s Federal Plaza, offering a rotating menu of fresh-baked treats for delivery and curbside pickup. Co-owner Mark Sumsion, a franchisee for the Utah-based chain, says this will be the first of several Crumbl stores in Maryland. “We started with Rockville because it has so much diversity, there’s a robust amount of shopping on the Pike, and we love being next to stores like Trader Joe’s, T.J. Maxx and Ross,” he says. Cookie prices range from $3.88 for a single to $34.88 for a dozen, along with side orders of milk and ice cream. The store currently offers delivery in a five-mile range via DoorDash, but Sumsion says he’ll soon expand the delivery area with a staff of dedicated drivers. So what’s the next frontier for Crumbl? Likely Gaithersburg or Germantown.

Wildwood scoop

In other diet-busting news, Sarah’s Handmade Ice Cream & Treats will open next Friday (Oct. 9) at the Wildwood shopping center. Sarah’s, which launched last year in Bethesda’s Kenwood neighborhood, already has amassed a loyal fan base for specialty flavors like lavender honey, orange chocolate chip, lemon chiffon and roasted banana walnut. The store also offers vegan and alcohol-infused ice cream, fruity sorbets, milkshakes and custom cakes. You’ll find Sarah’s on the right side of Wildwood, next to the empty space where Le Pain Quotidien used to be. (Whatever happened to LPQ? Click here.)

Rose's Luxury — in the luxury of your home

Have you been making a bucket list of all the fabulous restaurants you’ll be visiting post-pandemic? Us too. For example, we’ve always wanted to try Rose’s Luxury but never dared to brave the long lines for this Michelin-starred D.C. favorite. So we were delighted to learn that Rose’s founder Aaron Silverman, a Potomac native, is now offering delivery to our area six nights a week. No lines, no worries, definitely no reason to wait until 2021 for this one. Choose two or three nights of impeccably prepared meals, including appetizers, entrées and desserts — $90 per person for two nights, or $120 per person for three. Your order will arrive with easy-to-follow instructions for assembly and reheating, complete with garnishes, pour-over sauces, dollops of whipped cream and custom Spotify playlists. The themed menus are refreshed every two weeks; upcoming highlights include “The Tex-Mex Table,” featuring brisket enchiladas and churro monkey bread; “Trip to Little Italy,” featuring chicken cacciatore and tiramisu; and “Rose’s Classics,” featuring rigatoni with eggplant and mint — plus the coconut and kiwi panna cotta pictured here. Goodbye Breadsmith, hello Attman’s and cookies to your door

September 10, 2020 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Attman's sets a date

The new Attman’s deli is set to open next Wednesday (Sept. 16th) at Park Potomac — just in time for all those Jewish High Holiday catering orders. Renovations have been happening all summer at the former home of Zoës Kitchen, where the Baltimore-based deli will offer indoor/outdoor dining plus delivery. Attman’s closed its doors at Cabin John Village last April and quickly signed a new lease at Park Potomac — just around the corner from longtime local favorite Brooklyn’s Deli. What to expect from this Attman’s reboot? Click here for our interview with the owner.

Breadsmith is toast — and a bad year for Cabin John

Cabin John Village has suffered another big loss: Breadsmith, which specialized in kosher and nut-free baked goods, closed its doors last weekend after 12 years in business. Breadsmith’s owners declined to comment, but their Facebook post blamed the pandemic as well as the center’s upcoming construction plans. This makes at least seven lost tenants for Cabin John Village since last spring – and most of those departures were not pandemic-related. Attman’s exited in April (see top story) along with Subway, followed by the permanent closing of French bistro Le Pain Quotidien after its parent company changed hands. Toy Castle shut down after 41 years when its owners decided to retire. And on the salon scene, Tropicuts and Hair Cuttery quietly disappeared while Zohra let its lease expire after more than a quarter-century. So what’s next for Cabin John Village? We’re not sure. Owner Edens has repeatedly declined to return our messages.

Something sweet for Rockville

Opening soon at Federal Plaza on Rockville Pike: Crumbl, offering fresh-baked cookies, cold milk and ice cream delivered to your door. This will be the first Maryland location for Utah-based Crumbl, which began its D.C.-area expansion just last week with another store in Vienna. Besides your basic chocolate chip, snickerdoodles and sugar cookies, Crumbl also offers a rotating menu of 120-plus flavors that change every week. Takeout and curbside pickup will be available too, with late-night hours on Fridays and Saturdays.

Thirteen local restaurants that won’t be back, sneak peek of the Amazon store, Peruvian chicken debuts, CPK files bankruptcy

July 30, 2020 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Thirteen unlucky restaurants

In the flurry of restaurant shutdowns these past few months — some pandemic-related, some not so much — it’s been difficult to keep track of which places are temporarily closed and which are gone for good. As we approach the end of summer, here’s a list of local eateries that likely won’t be back.

  • Addie’s at Park Potomac. This three-year-old reboot never seemed to regain the fan base of its fondly remembered predecessor on Rockville Pike. Other restaurants in the Black Restaurant Group portfolio have reopened since the pandemic began, but Addie’s won’t be among them.

  • Bagel City on Rockville Pike. This longtime favorite closed in March, and owner George Kavadoy originally expected to return. But as the pandemic dragged on, he changed his mind to protect the health of his ill wife.

  • Beefsteak at Westfield Montgomery mall. José Andrés’ veggie-centric restaurant pulled back during the pandemic, leaving only one location in the D.C. area. Beefsteak never did draw much of a crowd at the mall, where it faced tough competition from the Cava across the hall.

  • Chuy’s on Rockville Pike. The Mexican restaurant shut down in March after a four-year run at Federal Plaza. The Texas-based chain already had announced some closings before the pandemic, so the timing here was likely just a coincidence.

  • CiCi’s Pizza on Rockville Pike. This chain restaurant was a longtime tenant at the Pike Center strip mall, which also had been home to the departed Bagel City.

  • Gumbo Ya Ya at Rockville Town Square. This locally owned eatery across from First Watch featured a mashup of New Orleans-style cuisine and traditional Puerto Rican dishes. It didn’t even last six months in a spot that appears to be cursed, having been home to at least six failed restaurants in the past decade. (Remember Bobby’s Crabcakes, Tippy’s Taco House, 82 Steak Out, Ev & Maddy’s and Lab Cafe?)

  • Honeyfish Poke on Rockville Pike. This California-based concept was among the first local eateries to specialize in the Hawaiian-style raw fish dish. Owners had planned to open more locations in the D.C. area, but the expansion never happened. Honeyfish Poke went dark early in the pandemic  after a three-year run at Congressional Plaza.

  • La Tasca at Rockville Town Square. The Spanish-style tapas chain filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy in May and closed all its remaining locations. La Tasca had been of the last remaining original tenants at Rockville Town Square.

  • Le Pain Quotidien at Wildwood and Cabin John Village. LPQ was already struggling before the pandemic, and its U.S. division filed Chapter 11 in May. Some LPQ restaurants have since reopened, but these two won’t be back. (Update: A few months after we published this story, Le Pain Quotidien made an unexpected comeback at Wildwood. More in our Dec. 24th issue.)

  • Mirch Masala at Westfield Montgomery mall. The Indian restaurant reached its 10th anniversary in June, but the pandemic convinced owner Poonam Chopra not to renew her lease.

  • Nantucket’s Reef at Traville Village Center. It looks like we’ve seen the last of this Cape Cod-style eatery, which “temporarily” closed in March but hasn’t been heard from since.

  • Pizza CS on Rockville Pike. The Neapolitan-style pizzeria was already expected to exit this summer to make way for the new Wegmans-anchored redevelopment project. In this case, the pandemic just accelerated that timetable.

  • Subway restaurants in Potomac and Rockville. The sub chain recently closed its doors at Potomac’s Cabin John Village and Rockville’s Federal Plaza. It’s unclear whether the closings were pandemic-related.
Wintergreen Plaza

Amazon store almost ready for prime time

Here’s a sneak peek of the new Amazon 4-Star store, set to open next month at Westfield Montgomery mall. The shelves will be filled with an ever-changing selection of Amazon’s most popular and top-rated products in several key categories: books, toys, electronics, housewares and kitchen goods. You’ll also find plenty of Amazon gadgets, from Echos to Kindles, and Prime members will enjoy the same pricing they’d find online. This will be the first Amazon 4-Star store in the D.C. area. (The Amazon bookstores in Bethesda and Georgetown are a different concept.) For more photos of what’s in stock so far, check out Store Reporter on Facebook and Instagram.

Shin Orthodontics

Trouble for CPK

California Pizza Kitchen filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy this week, blaming the pandemic for its troubles. So far, it doesn’t sound like our area will be impacted: Staffers at Rio and Westfield Montgomery mall say they’ve been told those locations will stay open.

Zohra Salon & Zohra Men

Peruvian chicken at Fallsgrove

With all this news of restaurants closing, we do have one opening to report: Poyoteca, serving Peruvian chicken and sides, makes its debut this weekend at Rockville’s Fallsgrove shopping center. You’ll find it in the former Cheeburger Cheeburger space, next to Mamma Lucia. This is the second restaurant for Poyoteca, which also has a location in Baltimore.

Last days for Last Call, Moorenko’s to the mall, closings for Sur La Table and Bed Bath & Beyond

July 9, 2020 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Last days for Last Call

In another blow to the high-end shopping scene at Rockville’s Congressional Plaza, Neiman Marcus Last Call Studio is permanently closing its doors. The Dallas-based retailer is bucking the discount trend by shuttering most of its Last Call chain to focus on customers who don’t mind paying full price. The Congressional Plaza location has temporarily reopened to sell through its remaining inventory, all of which has been heavily marked down. Last Call’s departure, scheduled for Aug. 15th, comes less than a year after the closing of Saks Off 5th at the other end of Congressional Plaza. For a look at what’s left of Last Call, check out Store Reporter on Facebook and Instagram.

Freeman's

Mooooove over, Häagen-Dazs

This week we have another big scoop on the local ice cream scene: Silver Spring favorite Moorenko’s is heading to Westfield Montgomery mall. Owner Susan Soorenko has signed a lease for the marble-topped kiosk in what used to be the Sears wing, originally built for Peet’s Coffee and most recently home to Cookie Dough & Co. The once-quiet spot will be a whole lot busier when the Lego Store opens its doors right across the hall. “Was this location sent from heaven, or what?” laughs Soorenko, who hopes to be up and running by late July. If you haven’t tried Moorenko’s, she recommends starting with the basics (“We make an amazing strawberry”), and then moving on to specialty flavors like Salted Caramel with Praline, Blackberry Chocolate Chip, and bestsellers Honey Lavender and Fresh Ginger. This isn’t the only new ice creamery headed our way: Check out our July 2 issue for info on Sarah’s Handmade Ice Cream & Treats, now under construction at the Wildwood shopping center.

The future of Sur La Table

High-end kitchen retailer Sur La Table filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy this week, announcing plans to close about half of its 100-plus stores. Luckily for us, the Pike & Rose location is expected to remain open. So is the one at Tysons Galleria. Chevy Chase shoppers aren’t so lucky: That store will be gone by early fall.

Closings in store for Bed Bath & Beyond

Bed Bath & Beyond is also closing stores — about 200 in the next two years, possibly including some locations of sister chain Buy Buy Baby. The company has not announced which stores will be shuttered, but execs say they will rethink all locations that are within 20 miles of each other. That could be bad news for the Bed Bath & Beyond store in Gaithersburg, which is just a short drive away from the one on Rockville Pike. In the meantime, the retailer says its ubiquitous 20%-off coupons are sticking around.

Chuy's checks out for good

Along with all the temporary coronavirus closings, we also have news about some departures that will be permanent. Chuy’s has closed its doors after a four-year run at Federal Plaza. The Mexican chain shuttered several locations in the past few months, and the Rockville restaurant had been its last in Maryland. This week we also say goodbye to Mynd Spa, the most recent incarnation of the once-iconic Elizabeth Arden Red Door salon chain. Mynd Spa has gone bankrupt and closed all its locations, including the one next to the Canopy hotel at Pike & Rose.

Meanwhile... some businesses are booming

So who’s doing well right now? Grocery stores and drug stores, of course, and anyone who sells alcohol. The latter category is an important one for Montgomery County restaurants, which are temporarily allowed to sell wine, beer and cocktails along with food orders. Sales also are booming for Target, Walmart and Amazon as they scramble to fulfill orders for cleaning supplies, toilet paper and food. And big-box stores like Best Buy, Lowe’s and Home Depot can hardly keep up with the demand for refrigerators, freezers and other major appliances — not to mention laptops, phones and office equipment for the new work-at-home economy.

New opening at Pike & Rose, Five Below is on the go, Rockville restaurant closes and the real price of delivery apps

May 30, 2019 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Curry on over to Pike & Rose

Commonwealth Indian opened its doors at Pike & Rose this week, offering an upscale menu and stunning, modern decor (check out our photos on Facebook and Instagram). Traditional Indian entrees (curried chicken, butter chicken, lamb stew and vegetarian dishes) are served in family-style portions priced from $19 to $29. Also on the menu: six types of flatbreads, plus a full bar with Indian beer, wine and cocktails. Commonwealth is the third venture from chef Sunil Bastola, who also owns the Bollywood Bistro restaurants in Fairfax and Great Falls. What’s next for Pike & Rose? Brazilian steakhouse Fogo de Chão, almost ready to open right next door. Click here for more in our May 23rd edition.

Five Below is on the go

June 14th is moving day for Five Below on Rockville Pike. The popular discount chain, which sells teen gear and trendy household goods for five bucks or less, is leaving its longtime home at Federal Plaza for a new one next to Aldi, Michaels and Petco at Congressional North. Between now and mid-June, just in case five bucks isn’t enough of a bargain, everything in the old store is marked down 50 percent.

Rolls ‘n Rice Japanese Bistro Cafe has closed its doors after a decade in the Shops at Congressional Village off Rockville Pike. Owners opted not to renew their lease and have no plans to reopen.

The dish on delivery

Eater has an interesting report this week about online food delivery apps and the potential damage they’re doing to local restaurants. Services like Grubhub, Postmates and Uber Eats charge commissions as high as 30 percent, and some apparently also charge for handling customer questions and complaints. In the restaurant business, which already works on tight margins, these fees can take a substantial bite out of any potential profits. What to do? When you’re looking for local food delivery, Eater suggests skipping the apps and calling your favorite restaurant directly.

Lululemon goes for the guys — plus Robeks, Teamania & pop-up shopping in Rockville

May 16, 2019 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Lululemon goes for the guys

If you’ve shopped at Lululemon lately, you may have noticed what’s new: lots and lots of menswear. The fitness retailer is turning its attention to the male wallet, offering a greatly expanded assortment of workout and athleisure clothes, stretchy dress pants and wrinkle-free office attire. If you’re looking to spend $38 on boxer shorts or $58 on a T-shirt, this is the place. Lululemon is expecting to double its menswear business over the next five years, with additional revenue coming from new ventures into skin care, deodorant and athletic shoes.

Tea for two

New place to try near Rockville’s Federal Plaza: Teamania Bakery + Cafe, serving fresh-baked breads, desserts, coffee and Asian specialty teas. Doors opened last month at 130 Rollins Ave., and the brightly colored teas and charming decor have been generating buzz on social media. “We actually designed the aesthetic of this place with Instagram in mind,” says partner Arnold Chang. “A ton of money went into the custom-made furniture. The way everything looks is pretty important these days.” To see for yourself, check out our photos on Facebook and Instagram.

Robeks at the Row

Robeks makes its debut this weekend at Rockville’s Research Row development, serving up juices, smoothies and acai bowls just off I-270 between Chick-fil-A and One Life Fitness. Meanwhile, another Rockville sweet spot has closed its doors: Ki No Spoon is out at Wintergreen Plaza.

Pop-up shopping in Rockville

New initiative at Rockville Town Square: filling some of those empty storefronts with pop-up shops. At 36 Maryland Ave., once home to LiquidBlue Denim Boutique, four female entrepreneurs will be on site through Memorial Day selling chocolates, lotions, fragrances, dog treats, scarves, purses and jewelry. Just a block away on Gibbs Street, pop-up bookstore Carpe Librum is at the Square through August raising funds for child literacy efforts. More on that in our April 11th edition.

Sears checks out, Five Below is on the go, Justice closes… and what’s up with Wicked Waffle?

January 24, 2019 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Sears checks out, mall's ready to move on

Sears closed its doors for the last time at Westfield Montgomery mall this past weekend, clearing the way for the mall’s upcoming redevelopment. Long-term plans call for offices, apartments, a hotel, pedestrian walkways and outdoor promenades lined with upscale stores and restaurants. The mall also is getting a fancy new gym — and we hear it’s going to be a Life Time Athletic club, complete with a formal restaurant and rooftop swimming pool. We’re also hearing that the Macy’s Home Store will be next to close. More details on everything in our Oct. 25th edition.

What's up with Wicked Waffle?

There was some confusion this week about the fate of Wicked Waffle when the five-year-old eatery, a sister to Rockville’s Mosaic Cuisine, suddenly went dark at Westfield Montgomery mall. Despite what it looks like, owners tell us the restaurant will reopen next month with the same name and menu. In fact, they say they’re making plans for a national expansion of the Wicked Waffle brand. (Editor’s note: Wicked Waffle did not end up returning to the mall as planned. Click here for a follow-up story in our March 21st edition.)

More for the men

Fascino, the Italian clothing shop that opened last year at Westfield Montgomery mall, has left the Nordstrom wing for a new space right next to Untuckit. That makes two men’s stores conveniently located right across from Apple. (Editor’s note: Fascino closed its doors just two months after this move. Click here for more in our March 28th edition.)

Five Below is on the go

Five Below, the five-bucks-and-under discount chain, is moving out of its longtime home at Federal Plaza. Doors will close in late February and the store will reopen further north on Rockville Pike, right next to Aldi at the Congressional North shopping center. Five Below caters to kids and teens, but adults can find plenty of bargains — from $5 phone chargers, iPad covers and party supplies to pillows, T-shirts and bath bombs.

No Justice at Rio

Justice is closing its doors at Rio Washingtonian Center, marking the tween retailer’s exit from Montgomery County. Justice, once known as Limited Too, has been shuttering locations across the country to avoid the fate of bankrupt competitors like Wet Seal, American Apparel and Delia’s. What’s next for Rio? A $30 million upgrade. More details in our Oct. 4th edition; click here.

So long Seven Seas and B/Bop/Q, hello Cabin John bakery

May 3, 2018 By Store Reporter 1 Comment

So long Seven Seas

Seven Seas, one of Rockville’s oldest Chinese restaurants, will close its doors at the end of this month. The 31-year-old eatery, on the back side of Federal Plaza near Panera, was a takeout favorite known for its fresh seafood dishes and lobster platters. Management tells us the restaurant’s lease was up and there are no plans to relocate.

Sweet start at Cabin John

The big story in Potomac this week is the debut of Sweetly Anchored, the new bakery and coffee shop inside the Cabin John mini-mall. Doors open on Monday morning (May 7th) with scones, croissants, muffins and quiche along with coffee and espresso drinks. Every afternoon the cases will be filled with cupcakes, cookies, brownies and tarts for eat-in or takeout. Owner Lindsay Miniaci, who is known for her specialty cakes, says new baked goods will be added in the weeks to come. The bakery will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Bye B/Bop/Q

Korean fusion eatery B/Bop/Q closed its doors last weekend after less than three years at Westfield Montgomery Mall. Owned by a Rockville-based food service company that had planned to turn B/Bop/Q into a chain, the restaurant had a loyal fan base but had trouble drawing crowds so far from the main Dining Terrace. Another nearby restaurant that opened around the same time, Shanghai Bao Kitchen, had similar issues and closed its doors last winter.

Comings & goings at the mall

This week we have a few more comings and goings to report at Westfield Montgomery Mall. The newest addition is Italian lingerie store Intimissimi, now open in the Nordstrom wing. Infinite Beauty, one of the mall’s longtime tenants, has added a second location offering facials and other spa services. Meanwhile, we say goodbye to Asian clothing chain Hoamgar after a five-year run. As we mentioned in our March 8 issue, this had been the first U.S. location for the high-end chain — but its merchandise failed to catch on.

Trader Joe’s in Travilah, CAVA on Rockville Pike, Dave & Buster’s at Rio

February 22, 2018 By Store Reporter 5 Comments

Trader Joe’s at Travilah? Not just yet

Disappointing news for Trader Joe’sfans in Rockville: The new location at Travilah Square Shopping Centeris really behind schedule. While the store initially was expected to open by early spring, construction has been delayed — and now we hear that it might not even arrive before the holidays. A company spokesman was noncommittal: “Later this year” was all we could get. The Gaithersburg Trader Joe’s will be closing once the new store opens, but the Rockville location is staying put. (Editor’s note: For an update on this story, click here.)

Dave & Buster’s rolls into Rio

Nine months after we first reported that Dave & Buster’s would be heading to Gaithersburg’s Rio Washingtonian Center, the deal finally became official this week. The gaming chain, which has been seeking a new location in this area since the White Flint Mall was torn down, is moving into the former Sport & Health space near the movie theater. And we hear there are more renovations on the way for Rio. Stay tuned.

My Best Friend's Closet

My Best Friend’s Closet grows up

A lot has changed at My Best Friend’s Closet since the boutique opened nearly a decade ago in Rockville. Once a go-to for tweens in search of gently used clothing and party wear, the store now carries all-new merchandise that takes its customers into their 20s and beyond. Partners Susan Olan and Cheryl Rhodes say the same young women who first came looking for bat mitzvah dresses are now out of college and still shopping at the store — as are their mothers. While My Best Friend’s Closet no longer carries any recycled items, the store has managed to keep prices down by working with vendors whose clothes can’t be found in department stores. Federal Plaza with Oreck vacuum store

Vacuum store bites the dust

This week we received a lot of reader mail about the unexpected closing of the Oreck store at Federal Plaza on Rockville Pike. Some customers who had dropped off their vacuums for repair are now trying to figure out how to get them back. Oreck is directing people to its next-closest store in Ellicott City, where some of the missing vacuums apparently have shown up. To get in touch with that store, click here.

Peruvian on the Pike

La Limeña Grill, a new spinoff of the popular Peruvian restaurant, is set to open next month in the former Potomac Grill space at 1093 Rockville Pike. Owner Emma Perez says the new place will be a bit more formal than its older sister at nearby Ritchie Center, with twice as much indoor seating plus a spacious outdoor patio. Unlike the original La Limeña, this restaurant will focus solely on Peruvian food with no Cuban dishes in the mix. The new menu is still being finalized, but you can see what’s cooking at the original La Limeña by clicking here.

Marbles The Brain Store

Game over for Marbles

Another week, another retail bankruptcy to report. This time it’s Marbles: The Brain Store, which has filed Chapter 11 after nearly a decade in business. The Chicago-based company carried a carefully edited selection of games and puzzles, with a hands-on approach that encouraged customers to play before they purchased. All 37 Marbles stores will be closing in the next month or two, including the one in the Nordstrom wing at Westfield Montgomery Mall. To see what’s still for sale, click here.

Lucky Strike bowling alley

Bowling alley opening delayed again

The debut of Lucky Strike Social at Westfield Montgomery Mall has been delayed yet again. Grand opening events that were scheduled for February have now been pushed back to early March — about nine months later than originally planned, as the company tinkered with its new bowling alley/game center/party venue concept. For more on Lucky Strike Social, click here for our Jan. 19 edition.

Topshop, Kate Moss, Venus and a farmers market

April 24, 2014 By Store Reporter

Norstrom Topshop Suede Fringe Jacket, Spring 2014

Topshop at Nordstrom

Topshop, the trendy British fashion chain, made its Maryland debut last week as a store-within-a-store at Nordstrom in Westfield Montgomery Mall. The POV department moved upstairs to make room on the store’s first floor for Topshop’s fast-changing mix of up-to-the-minute styles. The Nordstrom/Topshop partnership is designed to grab the attention of younger women with tighter budgets who typically shop at cheap-chic stores like H&M and Forever 21. Starting April 30, Topshop also will feature a higher-end clothing line from model Kate Moss with vintage-style pieces like the $420 suede fringed jacket shown here. If you like Kate’s taste, move fast: Her first collection for Topshop, back in 2007, sold out almost instantly.

Juicing with Venus

Jamba Juice has finally started up the blenders at its new Rockville store, next to Ruby Tuesday at Federal Plaza on the Pike. In addition to smoothies, the menu includes breakfast foods, sandwiches, wraps and baked pretzels. The Rockville store is a joint venture between the smoothie chain and tennis star Venus Williams, who is working with Jamba Juice as a celebrity spokesperson and D.C.-area franchisee. Williams already has opened two stores in Washington and a third at Westfield Montgomery Mall. She’s expected to make an official appearance at the Rockville store by summer.

Pike Central Farm Market, Pike & Rose

Farm fresh on the Pike

The Pike Central Farm Market makes its spring debut this weekend, featuring 40-plus vendors from Maryland and surrounding states. Participants will be selling everything from hormone-free meats, artisanal cheeses and local produce to live Maine lobsters, Chinese dumplings, New York-style pickles and goat milk soaps. This year the market will be held at a new location — the intersection of Old Georgetown Road and Executive Boulevard — due to construction at the nearby Pike & Rose project. When Pike & Rose is finished, developers say the Farm Market will have a permanent home there. For now, it’s open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. until late November.
