Shake Shack arrives at the mall, new Bethesda Bagels ready to roll, Baskin Robbins on the move

December 23, 2021 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Shopping with Shake Shack

Just in time to fuel all those last-minute holiday shopping trips, Shake Shack opened its doors this week in the Dining Terrace at Westfield Montgomery mall. Taking over the prime corner spot next to the now-closed Urban Plates, this fast-food favorite is known for its burgers, crinkle-cut fries, shakes and frozen custard. What’s next for Westfield Montgomery? The comeback of the movie theater, whose parent company ArcLight went out of business. This week, the lights were and reopening preparations were already underway. Look for an announcement very soon from AMC. (More on that in our Dec. 2 edition.)

New Bethesda Bagels ready to roll

Bethesda Bagels is just about ready to make its debut at the Fallsgrove shopping center on Shady Grove Road. Co-owner Danny Fleishman, who originally had hoped to open this fall, is now aiming for mid-January. The Fallsgrove location will be the chain’s first in Rockville and sixth in the DMV, serving up fresh-baked bagels and spreads, soups, deli sandwiches, pizzas and kosher hot dogs. This location, like the one at Wildwood, will be takeout-only.

New scoop on Baskin Robbins

Good news for everyone who was bummed about Baskin Robbins leaving Cabin John Village: Owners tell us they’ve found a new home at Potomac Woods Plaza off Seven Locks and Montrose. The ice cream shop will remain open at Cabin John for another month or two, then get ready for a spring debut at Potomac Woods. So what will happen to the former Baskin Robbins space? We’re still betting on Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream. For more scoop on what’s next for Cabin John, click here.

Frank Pepe makes progress, Thai food & pet boutique for Park Potomac

December 16, 2021 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Pizza pies on the rise

At long last — and nearly two years after the lease was signed — Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana is making visible progress on its new location at Westfield Montgomery mall. The signs are up, the buzzsaws are buzzing, the interior has been gutted, and there’s finally nothing left of Bobby’s Burger Palace. Frank Pepe, founded almost a century ago, is credited with creating the “New Haven style” of thin, crispy pizza baked in a coal-fired oven. Its signature pie is topped with white clams, garlic and pecorino cheese. This new location — likely to open in mid-2022 — will offer dine-in, pickup and delivery.

New at the mall

Just in time for the holidays, Santa has gifted Westfield Montgomery mall with a couple of last-minute additions:

  • Winter popup The Kashmir Collection, back for another season, has a colorful selection of Indian clothes, textiles and art. You’ll find it on the lower level, across from Aerie and Offline.
  • Big Al’s Subs and Soups is new in the Dining Terrace, taking over the former Patisserie Manuel space next to McDonald’s.
  • Mattress company Purple is moving into the Macy’s wing, taking over the prime corner spot that once belonged to the Microsoft store. This has displaced the clothing boutique Patrizia Luca, which has relocated for the umpteenth time. You’ll find it now in the Nordstrom wing, next door to Free People.

Thai food, pet boutique & more for Park Potomac

Two promising new businesses are joining the lineup at Park Potomac: Kruba, a Thai restaurant from D.C., and Elysiem, a locally owned pet boutique. Kruba replaces Wine Harvest, which closed its doors last year. Elysiem, which also has a location in Bethesda, will be next door to Love Couture Bridal and across the street from Park Potomac’s new veterinarian. Also heading to Park Potomac next year are Yirisai, the sushi restaurant that’s replacing Elevation Burger (more here), and a new location for Gregorio’s Trattoria, which replaces Sugo (more here).

New Bethesda Bagels, mirror mall crawl, goodbye Lolli and Pops, hello Chocolate Moonshine

April 8, 2021 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

New Bethesda Bagels for Rockville

Bethesda Bagels is heading to Shady Grove Road, opening its sixth location in the DMV at the Fallsgrove shopping center. Owner Danny Fleishman is taking over the former GameStop space, where he hopes to be up and running by September or October. The menu will feature all the usual hits: fresh-baked bagels and spreads, sandwiches and salads, all-day breakfast, matzo ball soup and chicken soup. Layout will be similar to the store at Wildwood, but Fleishman hopes this location will have space for some indoor seating.

Goodbye Lolli and Pops, hello Chocolate Moonshine

Two months after Godiva went dark at Westfield Montgomery mall, the sugary shake-ups aren’t over yet. This week we say goodbye to nostalgia-themed candy shop Lolli and Pops, which has closed its doors to provide additional square footage for the upcoming Aerie lingerie store and its Offline activewear brand. Aerie and Offline, both owned by American Eagle, will now have side-by-side storefronts with their own separate entrances à la Pink and Victoria’s Secret. Meanwhile: Chocolate Moonshine, a Pennsylvania-based confectioner known for its brightly colored truffle bars, has moved into the former Godiva space. You may know this brand from local festivals and a short-lived pop-up shop at the mall a few years back. This new store will have a more expansive menu including truffles, fudge, turtles, chocolate-covered pretzels, marshmallow pops and the like. Owner Robert Jarrett, one of several local reps for Chocolate Moonshine, says he’s opening a few more stores in the D.C./Baltimore area. “With Godiva shutting down its entire U.S. brick-and-mortar business,” he says, “the timing was right for me to grab some of those locations and bring my favorite chocolates to this market.”

Mirror crawl at the mall

Here’s a first look at Tonal, the latest mirror-based fitness system to set up shop at Westfield Montgomery mall. If you’re curious about how these gadgets work, you can now try out three different demo units in a single trip. Start your session in the activewear department at Nordstrom, where you’ll find the Tonal just outside the entrance to the Nordstrom Cafe. Then head over to Lululemon, where you can take a closer look at the Mirror.  Finish your fitness journey outside Macy’s, where Forme Life has a kiosk on the lower level. Tried them all? Sounds like you’ve earned yourself a visit to Chocolate Moonshine or Moorenko’s.

Goodbye to Lord & Taylor and three Rockville stores — plus our latest guide to winter takeout

December 31, 2020 By Store Reporter 1 Comment

Last of Lord & Taylor

As we say goodbye to 2020, we also say goodbye to the White Flint Lord & Taylor store — the last building standing from the demolished White Flint Mall. Doors closed for good this week after a five-month going-out-of-business sale that featured random surprises like rugs, used designer handbags and clothes from J. Crew and Talbots. Lord & Taylor had 38 stores left when the company’s new owners filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy last fall. (More on that in our Aug. 6th edition.) About half of those stores closed on Dec. 29th, and the rest — including the one in Chevy Chase — will likely be gone by February. But the Lord & Taylor name will live on: It’s been sold to yet another group that plans to relaunch it as an online shopping site. So what will happen now to the 45-acre White Flint property? Stay tuned.

Three stores exit Rockville

This week we also noted a few more year-end store closings around Rockville. ABC’s & 1-2-3’s, serving teachers and outfitting classrooms for 25 years, has gone dark at Wintergreen Plaza after its owners decided to retire. The It’Sugar candy store is exiting Rockville Town Square after a four-year run on Gibbs Street. And GameStop at Fallsgrove will be gone by the end of January.

Get ready to wait

If you’re heading out for some in-person shopping in the next few weeks, make sure to pack a little patience. With Montgomery County’s new capacity limits for indoor shopping plus the rush to do holiday returns, lines are increasingly common outside popular stores — especially those that sell food or cater to young female shoppers. At Westfield Montgomery mall this week, customers patiently queued up outside Victoria’s Secret, Pink, Windsor, Zara, and of course the Apple store. At Pike & Rose, the hottest ticket was H&M — a good sign for the longevity of that location, as the troubled retailer is currently deciding which of its 5,000 stores will remain open in 2021.

Latest on Lord & Taylor, county faces new COVID dining restrictions, Pet Valu goes belly-up

November 5, 2020 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

The endless going-out-of-business sale

Lord & Taylor has been going out of business since August, but the White Flint store is still fully stocked with discounted clothes, shoes, jewelry, bedding and gifts. In fact, we’ve see quite a few items that you wouldn’t expect to find at Lord & Taylor: shirts and jackets from J.Crew and Talbot’s, a case full of used designer handbags, even a newly opened rug gallery. That’s because a third-party company is running Lord & Taylor’s liquidation sales and filling all the empty floor space with outside merchandise. There are definitely bargains to be had, but all sales are final — so make sure to do your homework before you buy. For a look at what’s in stock, check out Store Reporter on Facebook and Instagram.

COVID crackdown could happen next week

Five months after Montgomery County loosened its coronavirus restrictions, county manager Marc Elrich is looking to tighten them up again. With cases on the rise, Elrich wants to roll back capacity limits from 50 percent to 25 percent for stores, restaurants, bowling alleys and fitness centers. He also wants to rescind the current waiver allowing late-night alcohol sales, forcing restaurants to stop their customers from boozing after 10 p.m. Under the current restrictions, diners are allowed to finish drinking whatever is on their tables at that hour. But the county says it’s received complaints about people gaming the system by “ordering large quantities of alcohol” just before cutoff time. Elrich’s proposals, which also include new rules about contact tracing, will be up for a vote from the county council next week.

Warm up your November with Rose's Luxury

As we head into the holidays — a time when our calendars normally would be filled with grand plans and great meals — at least we can still be thankful for the latter. Enter Rose’s Luxury, the Michelin-starred D.C. favorite that now delivers to our area. The Rose’s at Home fall menu includes one, two or three nights of perfectly curated meals, with simple directions for reheating, assembly and plating in your own kitchen. This month’s offerings showcase Rose’s signature dishes (smoked brisket with slaw, pickle-brined fried chicken) along with themed meals: “Oktoberfest” features a pretzel roll with beer cheese and bratwurst with braised cabbage; “Childhood Favorites” includes spaghetti with meatballs and banana pudding with Nilla Wafers; and “Breakfast for Dinner” has drop biscuits with sausage gravy and French toast sticks with spiced syrup. If you’re thinking ahead to Thanksgiving, Rose’s will be cooking lemon pepper-brined turkey, charred brussels sprout Caesar salad, mashed potatoes, mushroom stuffing and roasted fall veggies. Pricing starts at $40 per person per night. Ready to plan your Rose’s at Home experience? Click here for all the details.

Pet Valu goes belly-up

Despite the fact that nearly everyone you know has adopted a dog during the pandemic, the Pet Valu retail chain is going out of business after 25 years. The Pennsylvania-based company says coronavirus “significantly impacted” its sales, and all 358 stores will be closing — including the ones at Cabin John Village and Fallsgrove. Clearance sales begin this weekend.

Thirteen local restaurants that won’t be back, sneak peek of the Amazon store, Peruvian chicken debuts, CPK files bankruptcy

July 30, 2020 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Thirteen unlucky restaurants

In the flurry of restaurant shutdowns these past few months — some pandemic-related, some not so much — it’s been difficult to keep track of which places are temporarily closed and which are gone for good. As we approach the end of summer, here’s a list of local eateries that likely won’t be back.

  • Addie’s at Park Potomac. This three-year-old reboot never seemed to regain the fan base of its fondly remembered predecessor on Rockville Pike. Other restaurants in the Black Restaurant Group portfolio have reopened since the pandemic began, but Addie’s won’t be among them.

  • Bagel City on Rockville Pike. This longtime favorite closed in March, and owner George Kavadoy originally expected to return. But as the pandemic dragged on, he changed his mind to protect the health of his ill wife.

  • Beefsteak at Westfield Montgomery mall. José Andrés’ veggie-centric restaurant pulled back during the pandemic, leaving only one location in the D.C. area. Beefsteak never did draw much of a crowd at the mall, where it faced tough competition from the Cava across the hall.

  • Chuy’s on Rockville Pike. The Mexican restaurant shut down in March after a four-year run at Federal Plaza. The Texas-based chain already had announced some closings before the pandemic, so the timing here was likely just a coincidence.

  • CiCi’s Pizza on Rockville Pike. This chain restaurant was a longtime tenant at the Pike Center strip mall, which also had been home to the departed Bagel City.

  • Gumbo Ya Ya at Rockville Town Square. This locally owned eatery across from First Watch featured a mashup of New Orleans-style cuisine and traditional Puerto Rican dishes. It didn’t even last six months in a spot that appears to be cursed, having been home to at least six failed restaurants in the past decade. (Remember Bobby’s Crabcakes, Tippy’s Taco House, 82 Steak Out, Ev & Maddy’s and Lab Cafe?)

  • Honeyfish Poke on Rockville Pike. This California-based concept was among the first local eateries to specialize in the Hawaiian-style raw fish dish. Owners had planned to open more locations in the D.C. area, but the expansion never happened. Honeyfish Poke went dark early in the pandemic  after a three-year run at Congressional Plaza.

  • La Tasca at Rockville Town Square. The Spanish-style tapas chain filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy in May and closed all its remaining locations. La Tasca had been of the last remaining original tenants at Rockville Town Square.

  • Le Pain Quotidien at Wildwood and Cabin John Village. LPQ was already struggling before the pandemic, and its U.S. division filed Chapter 11 in May. Some LPQ restaurants have since reopened, but these two won’t be back. (Update: A few months after we published this story, Le Pain Quotidien made an unexpected comeback at Wildwood. More in our Dec. 24th issue.)

  • Mirch Masala at Westfield Montgomery mall. The Indian restaurant reached its 10th anniversary in June, but the pandemic convinced owner Poonam Chopra not to renew her lease.

  • Nantucket’s Reef at Traville Village Center. It looks like we’ve seen the last of this Cape Cod-style eatery, which “temporarily” closed in March but hasn’t been heard from since.

  • Pizza CS on Rockville Pike. The Neapolitan-style pizzeria was already expected to exit this summer to make way for the new Wegmans-anchored redevelopment project. In this case, the pandemic just accelerated that timetable.

  • Subway restaurants in Potomac and Rockville. The sub chain recently closed its doors at Potomac’s Cabin John Village and Rockville’s Federal Plaza. It’s unclear whether the closings were pandemic-related.

Amazon store almost ready for prime time

Here’s a sneak peek of the new Amazon 4-Star store, set to open next month at Westfield Montgomery mall. The shelves will be filled with an ever-changing selection of Amazon’s most popular and top-rated products in several key categories: books, toys, electronics, housewares and kitchen goods. You’ll also find plenty of Amazon gadgets, from Echos to Kindles, and Prime members will enjoy the same pricing they’d find online. This will be the first Amazon 4-Star store in the D.C. area. (The Amazon bookstores in Bethesda and Georgetown are a different concept.) For more photos of what’s in stock so far, check out Store Reporter on Facebook and Instagram.

Shin Orthodontics

Trouble for CPK

California Pizza Kitchen filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy this week, blaming the pandemic for its troubles. So far, it doesn’t sound like our area will be impacted: Staffers at Rio and Westfield Montgomery mall say they’ve been told those locations will stay open.

Zohra Salon & Zohra Men

Peruvian chicken at Fallsgrove

With all this news of restaurants closing, we do have one opening to report: Poyoteca, serving Peruvian chicken and sides, makes its debut this weekend at Rockville’s Fallsgrove shopping center. You’ll find it in the former Cheeburger Cheeburger space, next to Mamma Lucia. This is the second restaurant for Poyoteca, which also has a location in Baltimore.

New Barnes & Noble, Cabin John construction, who’s closed but coming back

April 23, 2020 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Books in, toys out at Congressional

Whenever this pandemic finally ends, here’s one thing we know for sure: There will still be plenty of books to buy in Rockville. Construction has been moving along at Congressional Plaza, and the new Barnes & Noble sign is finally up. In case you haven’t heard, the bookstore will be moving across the street from its longtime home at Montrose Crossing. (Timetable? No one knows right now.) Meanwhile, Congressional Plaza also lost a longtime tenant this week: Child’s Play, one of our last locally owned toy stores, has closed its doors in Rockville. Owners say the exit is permanent, and it’s unrelated to coronavirus.

More construction at Cabin John

In other construction news, bulldozers have been bustling at Cabin John Village these past few weeks. In addition to the townhouses being built behind the center, the parking lot outside the mini-mall is fenced off for upgrades to its asphalt, landscaping and lighting. Long-term plans call for additional retail buildings on this side of Cabin John. Stay tuned to Store Reporter for the latest.

California Tortilla

Closed for now, but not for good

While many of our local restaurants remain open for takeout and delivery (scroll down for our list), some have opted to shut down temporarily instead of making the switch. Bagel City on Rockville Pike has been closed for several weeks, and the papered-over windows had customers concerned that it wouldn’t be coming back. Not to worry: Owners tell us they’ll reopen as soon as it’s safe to do so. First Watch also closed its doors at Rockville Town Square last week, but the Florida-based chain says all locations will reopen when the time is right. (Update: Bagel City eventually gave up on its plans for reopening. The restaurant’s sign came down in June. First Watch, however, did return.)

Local stores get creative — and our latest “We’re Open!” Guide

April 16, 2020 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Local stores get creative

Four weeks into the “new normal” where most of our local stores remain closed, some of them are cooking up creative ways to stay in business. From one-on-one online shopping sessions to doorstep drop-offs, sales are still happening and homebound customers are grateful for the diversion — not to mention the chance to support their local favorites. “If you had told me three months ago that I would be doing Facetime shopping, I would have thought it would never work,” says Gayle Herrmann of the Oak boutique in Kensington. “But now I go around the store holding up my phone,” she says. “I show things to customers and see what they’re excited about, and I even decide what size to send them. I basically become their personal shopper.” Indeed, it’s the “personal” part that everyone seems to appreciate right now. You certainly don’t get that from an Amazon order. “We’re getting such nice compliments from customers,” says Toy Castle owner Brian Mack, who started offering home delivery last week. “It feels good during this otherwise very difficult situation.” So what kind of stuff are local people buying right now? Most of it seems to fall into four categories:

  • Cozy clothes that are presentable enough for a Zoom session. “At first no one wanted to buy new clothes, but now that’s starting to change,” says Hanna Avissar Balkin of Hanna’s Connection. “People are beginning to socialize online, or do happy hour outdoors with social distancing.” Trendy loungewear by PJ Salvage is a bestseller at Occasions, while Scout & Molly’s in North Bethesda is selling tons of graphic T-shirts with inspirational sayings. Also: baseball caps that are cute enough to cover up bad hair and grey roots. “If you’ve got a conference call, you can give your hair a break and just pop that hat right on,” says owner Wendy Brack Fritz.

  • Care packages. Some people are buying gifts for themselves, others for their friends and employees. Bath and body products are selling fast at The Cottage Monet in Rockville Town Square — “especially those that smell like the sea,” says owner Caya Cagri. Occasions, with stores in Potomac and Kentlands, has been dropping lots of cellophane-wrapped gifts on local doorsteps. “Babies are still being born, birthdays are still being had,” says owner Stephanie Menick. “And thank-you gifts are big right now. We’re wrapping up soaps, lotions, hand sanitizers, chocolate-covered pretzels. Depending on the situation, we’ll throw in kids’ games or dog treats.”

  • Puzzles are having a moment. Toy Castle is delivering tons of them, but young families aren’t the only ones buying. Wildwood’s Red Orchard gift shop is dropping them off all over town. “Right now, puzzles are about 60 percent of our business,” says co-owner John Liberty. “Man, it’s a lot of puzzles. But it makes sense. It’s something for people to do when they’re stuck at home.”

  • Masks — if you can get them. Rayna Badwey Matz, owner of R Boutique, started ordering maks a few weeks ago and can hardly keep up with the demand. “As soon as I post them on my website, they’re gone within hours,” she says. Hanna’s Connection just got its first mask shipments and is throwing them in free with every order. Anja Caldwell, owner of FiberArt Studio in Potomac Village, is making her own masks and has posted an online tutorial on how to do it.

The national outlook

Shopping center parking lots remained relatively empty this week as customers ventured out only for food and “essential” business. Best Buy, which saw a sales bump in March as customers invested in home office equipment, has now furloughed 40 percent of its workforce. Other retailers that have furloughed workers include Nordstrom, Macy’s, Kohl’s, Gap, Victoria’s Secret, Bath & Body Works, REI, Dick’s Sporting Goods, The Container Store, Marshalls and TJ Maxx. Meanwhile, Neiman Marcus and JCPenney are both said to be on the verge of bankruptcy.

Attman’s update, what people are buying right now and mandatory masks in MoCo

April 9, 2020 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Dueling delis?

Latest update on the Attman’s closing: After exiting Cabin John Village last week, the deli may be heading to Park Potomac.  Owner Marc Attman confirms that he’s in discussions to take over the prime corner spot next to Sugo and Founding Farmers, which has been vacant since Zoës Kitchen closed in January. “We think it’s a good spot,” Attman says, but uncertainty over coronavirus has delayed a potential deal. If Attman’s moves to Park Potomac, we’ll soon have dueling delis off Seven Locks and Montrose. Brooklyn’s, with an avid following of its own, is just around the corner at Potomac Woods Plaza. (Update: The Attman’s move is now official. Click here for all the details.)

The week in retail: What's up, what's down & why you're about to get a mask

The past few days have brought a new round of retailers furloughing most of their employees, from Nordstrom, REI and Dick’s Sporting Goods to The Container Store, Marshalls and TJ Maxx. This follows last week’s furlough announcements from Macy’s, Kohls, Gap, Victoria’s Secret and Bath & Body Works. On the other side of the equation, grocery stores have been so busy that most are limiting visitors to allow for social distancing. But food isn’t the only category facing unprecedented demand. Home exercise equipment, cooking appliances and gardening tools are flying off the virtual shelves. Video games are selling like crazy, but so are more old-fashioned pursuits like board games, building sets and puzzles. As the weather warms up, families without access to playgrounds are outfitting their backyards with trampolines, lawn games and inflatable bounce houses. And in Montgomery County, masks are about to be a hot seller: As of next Monday (April 13th), face covers will be mandatory when you’re out shopping.

International School of Music

What about returns?

Here’s another issue that retailers are struggling with right now: What to do about returns and refunds? Stores that are closed can’t accept them in person, and stores that are open don’t want customers crowding in line or handing back potentially contaminated goods. Some supermarkets, including Giant, have declared all sales final until further notice. Others, including Costco, are refusing to take back hoarded items like toilet paper and bottled water. But many retailers have gone in the opposite direction, extending their return windows by weeks or months until stores have reopened and customers are allowed to shop for non-essentials. Even Amazon has relaxed its usual 30-day refund policy, announcing this week that orders placed in March and April can be returned until the end of May.

First closings of 2020: a gym, a jewelry store, A.C. Moore & more

January 2, 2020 By Store Reporter 5 Comments

Who didn't survive the holidays?

They say January is the cruelest month — and that’s certainly true in the world of retail and restaurants. Every year, longtime businesses start disappearing as soon as the holiday rush is over. In this week’s issue: three stores, a gym and a burger joint that won’t be joining us in 2020.

A.C. Moore is out the door

The next few weeks will be the last for A.C. Moore. The New Jersey-based chain, a haven for artists and crafters, is going out of business after 30 years. At the Montrose Crossing location in Rockville, doors will close in February unless the merchandise sells out faster. If you’re planning a visit, don’t wait too long: Shelves are emptying fast.

Bye bye Blanca Flor

Jewelry store Blanca Flor, which specialized in fine silver, will exit this weekend after 22 years at the Wildwood shopping center. Owners say they’re retiring and have no plans to open elsewhere. Stay tuned to Store Reporter for news about who may be moving in.

Gold's Gym throws in the towel

Gold’s Gym on Randolph Road closed its doors at the end of December. The club had been under pressure these past few years as competitors like Soldierfit, Club Pilates, Fit Body Boot Camp and Title Boxing Club moved into the surrounding neighborhood. Gold’s Gym still has locations at Wintergreen Plaza and Rockville Town Square.

So long Shoppers

Shoppers Food Warehouse has been retreating from the D.C. area, selling some of its stores to rival grocers and shuttering others for good. The store at White Flint Plaza falls into the latter category. It will be empty by mid-January.

International School of Music

Bye bye burgers at Fallsgrove

Retro diner Cheeburger Cheeburger has closed its doors at the Fallsgrove shopping center. The Rockville location was the last Cheeburger Cheeburger in Montgomery County; another one in Olney closed two years ago.

Bethesda Bagels at Wildwood, subs & cycling at Fallsgrove, Modern Market moves out

September 26, 2019 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Bethesda Bagels: Not schmear yet

A bit of bad news on the bagel front: Bethesda Bagels is not going to arrive at Wildwood for another couple of weeks. Owner Danny Fleishman had hoped to get this location open in time for the Jewish High Holidays, one of the busiest times of year in the bagel biz. But Rosh Hashanah begins on Sunday night (Sept. 29th), and construction isn’t done yet. Fleishman is now aiming to open on Oct. 11th.

Modern Market moves out

Notice something missing between LebTav and Chopt? Modern Market has closed its doors in Rockville after a three-year run at Congressional Plaza, where it served up a health-conscious menu of salads, sandwiches and brick oven pizzas. The Colorado-based chain also shuttered its location on Bethesda Row, but it’s still operating restaurants in D.C. and Columbia, Maryland. What went wrong in Montgomery County? A spokesman declined to comment.

Subs and cycling at Fallsgrove

Jersey Mike’s Subs has opened its doors at the Fallsgrove shopping center, taking over the space that previously belonged to Jerry’s Subs & Pizza. This is the second Rockville restaurant for Jersey Mike’s, which also has a location at Wintergreen Plaza. Up next for Fallsgrove: Senz Yoga, Barre & Cycle. Stay tuned for an opening date.

Urban Plates, Cinnabon, Jersey Mike’s, Amazon Lockers & more

February 7, 2019 By Store Reporter 3 Comments

First look at Urban Plates

This week we had a chance to preview the menu at Urban Plates, which recently opened at Tysons Galleria and will arrive next month at Westfield Montgomery mall. The restaurant manages to gracefully combine a casual atmosphere and cafeteria-line setup with high-end entrées like osso bucco and striped sea bass, all at a price point well below $20. Sandwiches and salads are plentiful here (including a standout chicken club), along with tasty sides like brussels sprouts with turkey bacon, rainbow carrots with golden beets, and miso mushrooms with sweet potatoes. Desserts and juices also are house-made, and the Westfield Montgomery location will offer wine and beer. This one looks like a winner.

Cinnabon and Amazon Lockers

In other mall news, Cinnabon is moving into the long-empty space next to Popeyes. The Core clothing store, which exited Westfield Montgomery two years ago, is making a comeback in the Nordstrom wing. And here’s a perk for online shoppers: A wall of Amazon Lockers will be installed next month near Forever 21. Not familiar with the concept? Amazon Lockers are self-serve “mailboxes” where you can drop off a package or receive a delivery at the time of your convenience. All you do is schedule the pickup or dropoff online, then Amazon sends you a locker number and a private code to open it. No more waiting for the UPS truck or worrying about porch pirates.

Rooftop skating at Pike & Rose

An ice-skating rink made its debut last weekend on the rooftop terrace of the Canopy Hotel at Pike & Rose. The rink, which features synthetic ice, is open for the rest of this month with lounge seating on one side and a hotel menu on the other. Tickets are $14 to $17 per person and benefit the nonprofit Mel’s Rink Foundation, which is raising money to build an indoor sports facility for kids with special needs.

Goodbye Jerry's, hello Jersey Mike's

Jersey Mike’s Subs is on the way to the Fallsgrove shopping center, replacing the recently closed Jerry’s Subs and Pizza. This will be the second Jersey Mike’s in Rockville, following a three-year-old location at Wintergreen Plaza. Opening date TBD.

Potomac Paddlesports floats out of the Village

Potomac Paddlesports has closed up shop in Potomac Village. After several years selling watersports gear in the mini-mall at the Potomac Promenade shopping center, owner Sunny Pitcher says he wants to focus on his core business of kayak lessons and excursions.

Lululemon, beer and a new veggie restaurant — plus the return of Dawson’s Market

December 5, 2018 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

New Lulu

Here’s a holiday gift for Lululemon lovers: The company’s newest store will open its doors Dec. 14th at Gaithersburg’s Downtown Crown. The spot is strategically located just around the corner from Life Time Athletic and LA Fitness (not that anyone really needs a workout as an excuse to visit). Lululemon joins the recently opened Sephora as Crown begins to mix in some retail with all those restaurants.
