Cabin John booze store ready to roll, Christmas comes early at Nordstrom, Miniso hits the mall

October 20, 2021 By Store Reporter 2 Comments

New spirits at Cabin John Village

Here’s a glimpse of the future tasting room at Oak Barrel & Vine, the county-operated beer, wine and spirits store that opens next week at Cabin John Village. Showcased in a prime spot between Giant and Starbucks, this store looks nothing like its dingy predecessor inside the Cabin John mini-mall. With a new name, modern decor and welcoming atmosphere, it’s meant to serve as a prototype for the future of Montgomery County Alcohol Beverage Services. The tasting room, which will have barstools and working taps by next week, will be a hub for local brewers and distillers to host sampling events. There also will be a wine library, a selection of super high-end spirits, cocktail accoutrements, and the latest drinks from celebs like The Rock, Nick Jonas and George Clooney. Doors will open on Wednesday (Oct. 27th). For a preview tour, check out Store Reporter on Facebook and Instagram.

Miniso hits the mall

Asian variety store chain Miniso made its Maryland debut this week with a new location at Westfield Montgomery mall. The eight-year-old brand was created by a Chinese entrepreneur but describes itself as “Japanese-inspired,” focusing on cute, colorful goods at a $5-to-$15 price point. The selection here is surprisingly wide: everything from home goods, exercise equipment, toiletries and phone accessories to plush toys, kids’ luggage, teen styles, baby items and pet products. Some of the brands are unfamiliar to U.S. shoppers, but many items are produced in partnership with names like Marvel, Disney, Hello Kitty and Sesame Street. Miniso has nearly 5,000 stores in 90 countries, but its U.S. expansion is just beginning. At Westfield Montgomery, it replaces the short-lived Perfume Palace near Macy’s.

The Bottle Shop

Christmas cheer starts earlier this year

Looks like Christmas has arrived early at Nordstrom this year. Normally, the department store chain makes a point of being fashionably late with its holiday decor. While other stores start the festivities right around Halloween, Nordstrom waits until after Thanksgiving to deck the halls. But this year is different: The Westfield Montgomery mall store already has a holiday shop brimming with self-lighting trees, ornaments and shelves of festive Christmas and Chanukah gifts. A Nordstrom rep tells us this doesn’t count as decorating early, because all these items are actually for sale. “We have a longstanding tradition of waiting until after Thanksgiving to decorate our stores,” the rep says,”and we will continue that tradition again this year.” (OK, whatever you say.)

Indoor dining is out, new Potomac sports bar is in — plus holiday meals & gift ideas

December 17, 2020 By Store Reporter 2 Comments

Indoor dining is off the table

Indoor dining was banned at Montgomery County restaurants this week after new rules went into effect on Tuesday night. Takeout, delivery and outdoor dining are still allowed, but tents on the sidewalk must keep at least one side entirely open and space their tables at least six feet apart. Also: No outside dining after 10 p.m. Retailers now have to cap traffic at one person per 200 square feet — maximum 150 people total — unless they get a waiver from the county. Update: On Friday (Dec. 18) the Restaurant Association of Maryland filed a legal challenge to executive orders prohibiting indoor dining in Montgomery County, Prince George’s County and Baltimore City. Stay tuned.

Quincy's ready for kickoff

With all the news about restaurant closings these days, we’re happy to report on an opening: Quincy’s sports bar is ready to make its debut in the former Amici Miei space at Potomac Woods Plaza. “We’ll definitely be open by the end of the year,” says partner John Sahakian, co-owner of the Quincy’s chain as well as two Title Boxing clubs. Sahakian’s team has spent a year renovating the Potomac Woods space, including new finishes, new furniture and new doors and windows that let in more natural light. There are 35 TVs that will be tuned to different games, including three at the outside entrance. Sahakian is still finalizing the menu, which will feature sandwiches, wings, pizzas, flatbreads, wraps, salads, cocktails and 20 beers on tap. If things go well, doors will open around Christmas.

Chapter 11 update

As we wrap up 2020, the retail bankruptcies continue to roll in. Francesca’s, which shuttered its Pike & Rose location last year, is among the latest additions to the Chapter 11 club with more closings planned for 2021. Guitar Center is also in Chapter 11, but the chain expects to emerge this month with most of its locations intact. And Bed Bath & Beyond, which closed its Gaithersburg store this year, is looking to raise more cash by selling off its World Market chain. We’ll likely see another round of store closing in January, after holiday shopping is over and retailers cut their losses.

Family fun with Lego

Since we’re all going to be hunkered down indoors this winter, the new Lego store at Westfield Montgomery mall has some great ideas for family projects. We got a chance to test out the new art sets, which help you create images of Star Wars characters, the Beatles, Iron Man, Mickey Mouse, Hogwarts or Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe. When you’re done, you can hang up your creation or take it apart and start a new one. The Star Wars set, for example, can be used to create Darth Maul, Kylo Ren or Darth Vader — or buy three kits to create a giant version of Luke Skywalker’s dad-gone-bad. Lego art kids are $119.99 each online, or find them at the Lego store at Westfield Montgomery mall.

Lands' End takes off the winter chill

If you’re looking for gifts for this cozy winter at home, the Lands’ End store in Rockville is full of great ideas. This year we got to try out the ultimate work-from-home ensemble: flannel pajama pants (with pockets!) and felt slippers with sherpa lining. Throw on a black shirt for your Zoom meetings, and no one needs to know how comfortable you actually are. We also love the company’s classic totes and canvas storage bins. Shop Lands’ End online, or visit the store in person at Congressional Plaza.

Restaurant restrictions rolling back in, closings at Park Potomac — plus holiday meals, Korean hot dogs & Chick-fil-A

December 10, 2020 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

New dining rules roll in next week

Get ready for the next round of restaurant dining restrictions. With COVID cases continuing to rise, Montgomery County executives plan to suspend indoor dining as of Tuesday (Dec. 14th) at 5 p.m. Delivery and takeout will still be allowed, but there will be new rules for outdoor dining tents: They must keep at least one side entirely open, and they must have at least six feet of space between diners at different tables. Also, those single-party dining “bubbles” that have been popping up around town will be off-limits without special permission from the county. The new rules will affect stores and malls as well: Capacity will now be capped at one person per 200 square feet of retail space.

Park Potomac update: Wine Harvest, yoga studio exiting this month

These are the final few weeks for Wine Harvest, which will close its doors on New Year’s Eve after a decade at Park Potomac. The Meyrowitz family, which ran this restaurant as well as the recently closed Kentlands location, says it was too difficult to turn a profit in the current environment. “A large portion of Park Potomac residents are staying safe and staying inside,” says Andrew Meyrowitz, who now works for Schneider’s of Capitol Hill. And with nearby offices empty for months at a time, the restaurant lost much of its business crowd as well. “It was time to hang up our corkscrews,” Meyrowitz says. Wine Harvest isn’t the only tenant exiting this month: Right around the corner, Park Potomac Yoga is also going dark. Owner Debi Schenk, who opened the studio just last year, says her lease didn’t make sense without in-person classes. Schenk is teaching online for now and hopes to reopen nearby when the pandemic is over.

Let Rose's Luxury do your holiday cooking

Our holiday gatherings may be more intimate than usual this year, but smaller can be special when there’s a fabulous meal to be shared. This month, D.C. favorite Rose’s Luxury is offering traditional menus with a fun and festive twist. Check out the Hanukkah spread: brisket lo mein, potato latkes with sour cream, roasted applesauce and chocolate babka. The Christmas Feast features honey-baked ham or center cut beef tenderloin, mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, roasted chestnuts with celery root salad, roasted squash with pomegranate — plus a can of Ocean Spray cranberry sauce, just like mom used to make. After that comes the New Year’s menu: potato pancakes with crème fraîche and caviar, long noodles and brisket stir-fry, fried chicken, black-eyed peas, and a chocolate and salted caramel tart. You can pick up, order à la carte, or have everything delivered to your door in Rockville, Potomac, Bethesda or anywhere else within 30 miles of Capitol Hill. Ready to order? Mall dining scene: Korean hot dogs and Chick-fil-A

With all the restaurant closings at Westfield Montgomery mall these days, at least there’s one new eatery on the way: Ssong’s Hotdog, opening soon next to Orange Julius. Ssong’s sells corn dog-like snacks that are deep-fried on the outside and filled with meat or cheese on the inside. On the other side of the Dining Terrace, Chick-fil-A was dark this week, but we’re told it’s being deep-cleaned and will soon be back in business.

More closings at the mall, new salon for men, start the bidding for holiday auctions

December 3, 2020 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

More closings at the mall

Another blow to the food scene at Westfield Montgomery mall: Cold Stone Creamery is out after a five-year run. This is the sixth eatery to exit the Dining Terrace since the pandemic began, following the departures of Mirch Masala, Beefsteak, Gusto, Spice 6 and Poké Papa. Elsewhere at the mall, the Aroma coffee shop is also gone — and it’s not clear if Peking Duck and Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana are ever going to open.

Adiós Alex and Ani

Five years ago, Alex and Ani was the hottest new jewelry store at Westfield Montgomery mall. Teens and young women were stacking their arms and gifting their friends with the company’s signature recycled metal charm bracelets. But the fad has faded, the bracelets have tarnished, and even Alex and Ani’s founder has moved on. The chain shuttered all its stores at the beginning of the pandemic. Some of them finally reopened several weeks ago, but this one didn’t make the cut.

Men's salon ready to roll

After nearly a year in limbo, Boardroom Salon for Men is finally starting its buildout on Rockville Pike. The Texas-based chain signed a lease at the beginning of 2020, but its future seemed uncertain after the salon industry got slammed by coronavirus. Now construction is finally underway at Montrose Crossing, right between Slapfish and Five Guys. When Boardroom opens — date TBD — it will offer haircuts, shaves, waxing and manly grooming in a clubby atmosphere with chess boards and pool tables. A $1,500 annual membership will get you an all-access pass: unlimited haircuts plus a suite of salon services.

Start the bidding: Holiday gifts at auction

The online auction market has had a phenomenal year — which means there are all kinds of treasures just waiting to be scooped up for holiday gifting. Freeman’s Auction House has an upcoming “Luxe” sale where you’ll find everything shown here — from the Belle Époque diamond ring and Patek Philippe wristwatch to the Chanel and Louis Vuitton handbags — plus much, much more. “You can get incredible deals at auction, especially for jewelry,” says Debrah Dunner, the Potomac-based rep for Freeman’s. “We tend to consign things that are highly coveted, rare and interesting — but that doesn’t always mean they’re unaffordable. There are plenty of starter pieces for new collectors, and our diamonds come with a GIA report so you know exactly what you’re getting. You will find some impressive, unique items at surprisingly accessible estimates.” To check out the Freeman’s Luxe auction, click here. For a full schedule of upcoming art sales, click here. Want to talk to Dunner about selling your own stuff? Email ddunner@freemansauction.com or call (301) 738-0347.

Black Friday shopping, Call Your Mother Deli, new stores & two surprise comebacks

November 26, 2020 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Let the shopping begin

Black Friday shopping is certainly different this year, with most stores staying closed Thanksgiving night for the first time in recent memory. If you’re planning to visit Westfield Montgomery this weekend, be sure to check the mall’s website before you leave. There you’ll find an online calculator for real-time capacity updates, ensuring that mall traffic stays within the county’s mandated limits. Individual stores also are monitoring visitors, so you may have to wait for your turn to go inside. And if the kids want to visit Santa, they’ll need an appointment and a mask. Meanwhile, here are a couple of new places to spend your holiday dollars:

  • The Lego store, which opened last month, has lots of family projects that are perfect for quarantine: Beatles wall art, Stranger Things vignettes and tons of stuff for Star Wars fans.
  • Amazon 4-Star, a recent addition on the mall’s lower level, is a one-stop shop for everything from cookware, tech and toys to games, books and art supplies.
  • Elite Jewelers is now open on the second level near Macy’s Home, with a wide selection of diamonds, gemstones and fine watches.
  • BrookieGirl, newly open in the Nordstrom wing, is a bath and body shop owned by a local entrepreneurial family. You’ll find it on the lower level near Forever 21.
  • See’s Candies is back again for the holidays — this time inside the former Bose storefront.
  • Everything But Water, which went dark early in the pandemic, made a surprise return in the Nordstrom wing this week with a store full of swimsuits, hats and beach gear.

Call Your Mother to Pike & Rose

Huge news for the dining scene at Pike & Rose: Call Your Mother, the quirky deli with the cult following, is moving in. This will be the second MoCo location for the D.C.-based chain, which also operates a mobile trolley in Bethesda. Call Your Mother is known for its top-notch bagels and offbeat twists on classic sandwiches. (The Pastrami Sun City features eggs, cheese and spicy honey; the Banyan Place has bacon, jalapeños and slaw; and the Gleneagle includes cucumbers and candied salmon cream cheese.) Doors should open next spring in the space that was just vacated by the Lucky store. For the scoop on another new restaurant that’s heading to Pike & Rose, click here.

Wildwood update: an opening and a comeback

J. McLaughlin, the Brooklyn-based sportswear chain, has opened its doors in time for holiday shopping at Wildwood. And the restaurant scene got a surprise addition this week when Le Pain Quotidien, which has been dark since spring, made an unexpected comeback. This is yet another win for Wildwood, where business seems to be booming despite the pandemic.

County cracks down on dining crowds, Fish Taco returns, two more stores go dark

November 12, 2020 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Tougher rules for stores and restaurants

With coronavirus outbreaks on the rise, Montgomery County moved forward this week to tighten restrictions on the number of people permitted to gather at local businesses. That means stores, restaurants and fitness centers must not admit additional guests once they have reached 25 percent capacity — down from the 50 percent that was allowed these past few months. In addition, restaurants now have to cut off alcohol sales at 10 p.m. — and pick up any drinks that remain unconsumed when the witching hour arrives. And one last thing: Restaurants are required to start collecting the names and numbers of all their customers, both indoors and outdoors, to facilitate contact-tracing if an outbreak should occur.

Fish Taco's back

Fish Taco reopened this week at Wildwood, sporting a new look and a lot more space for takeout orders and social distancing. (For more photos, check out Store Reporter on Facebook and Instagram.) The restaurant had been closed since August due to a kitchen fire, and owner Francis Namin says the pandemic slowed down repairs. Namin has been spending a lot of time at Wildwood this fall, shuttling between Fish Taco and his newest venture, Piccoli Piatti. (More on that in our Oct. 8th edition.)

Lucky leaves

Lucky Brand wasn’t so lucky this week: The store has closed its doors after five years at Pike & Rose. Lucky, best known known for its upscale jeans, filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy last July and was sold to an outside investment group. The company’s new owners said they would keep all the “key stores” open; apparently the Pike & Rose location didn’t qualify. There used to be another Lucky store at Westfield Montgomery mall, but that one closed in 2015.

Marmi's out at the mall

This week we say arrivederci to the Marmi shoe store, which made an unexpected exit from Westfield Montgomery mall. The four-year-old store, part of a Missouri-based chain that specializes in Italian designs and hard-to-find sizes, leaves yet another empty space in the Nordstrom wing. Marmi is the second shoe store to exit the mall this year, following the recent departure of Steve Madden.

Goodbye Breadsmith, hello Attman’s and cookies to your door

September 10, 2020 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Attman's sets a date

The new Attman’s deli is set to open next Wednesday (Sept. 16th) at Park Potomac — just in time for all those Jewish High Holiday catering orders. Renovations have been happening all summer at the former home of Zoës Kitchen, where the Baltimore-based deli will offer indoor/outdoor dining plus delivery. Attman’s closed its doors at Cabin John Village last April and quickly signed a new lease at Park Potomac — just around the corner from longtime local favorite Brooklyn’s Deli. What to expect from this Attman’s reboot? Click here for our interview with the owner.

Attorney Lloyd Malech

Breadsmith is toast — and a bad year for Cabin John

Cabin John Village has suffered another big loss: Breadsmith, which specialized in kosher and nut-free baked goods, closed its doors last weekend after 12 years in business. Breadsmith’s owners declined to comment, but their Facebook post blamed the pandemic as well as the center’s upcoming construction plans. This makes at least seven lost tenants for Cabin John Village since last spring – and most of those departures were not pandemic-related. Attman’s exited in April (see top story) along with Subway, followed by the permanent closing of French bistro Le Pain Quotidien after its parent company changed hands. Toy Castle shut down after 41 years when its owners decided to retire. And on the salon scene, Tropicuts and Hair Cuttery quietly disappeared while Zohra let its lease expire after more than a quarter-century. So what’s next for Cabin John Village? We’re not sure. Owner Edens has repeatedly declined to return our messages.

Something sweet for Rockville

Opening soon at Federal Plaza on Rockville Pike: Crumbl, offering fresh-baked cookies, cold milk and ice cream delivered to your door. This will be the first Maryland location for Utah-based Crumbl, which began its D.C.-area expansion just last week with another store in Vienna. Besides your basic chocolate chip, snickerdoodles and sugar cookies, Crumbl also offers a rotating menu of 120-plus flavors that change every week. Takeout and curbside pickup will be available too, with late-night hours on Fridays and Saturdays.

Outdoor dining returns to MoCo – plus the latest closings & bankruptcies

May 28, 2020 By Store Reporter 1 Comment

MoCo starts to reopen

Montgomery County will ease into the first phase of reopening on Monday, June 1st, as some bars and restaurants begin to offer limited outdoor seating along with takeout and delivery. Customers will be allowed to remove their masks while eating and drinking at outside tables. Not much will change for our local stores, which still will be limited to delivery and curbside pickup unless they are deemed “essential.” Fitness centers, movie theaters and indoor malls will remain closed for now. Salons can reopen, but only for haircuts. No waxing, no mani/pedis.

LPQ sells for a song

In this week’s restaurant bankruptcy roundup, we have bad news for fans of Le Pain Quotidien. The company’s U.S. division has filed Chapter 11 and is selling its assets to a New York restaurant operator. LPQ was losing money even before the pandemic; hence the shockingly low sales price of $3 million for all 98 of its U.S. locations. No word yet on whether LPQ will reopen at Wildwood or Cabin John.

Chapter 11 for Tuesday Morning

Tuesday Morning, the Dallas-based discount chain, is the latest national retailer to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The company blames coronavirus for its cash-flow problems, but says it expects stay in business after a reorganization. Several hundred Tuesday Morning stores will be closing permanently, including locations in Glen Burnie, Salisbury and Towson. But the retailer already has reopened in Rockville, where its mix of home goods and snacks is apparently considered an “essential” business.

Closing the window on Next Day Blinds

Next Day Blinds has gone out of business after more than a quarter-century in the D.C. area. The company was based in Jessup and had more than a dozen stores, including one on Rockville Pike.

Latest scoop: Addie’s, La Tasca & Walgreens

May 21, 2020 By Store Reporter 1 Comment

The end of Addie's?

Addie’s at Park Potomac has been shuttered throughout the pandemic — and insiders tell us it’s never going to reopen. The upscale restaurant arrived in the summer of 2017, with owners Jeff and Barbara Black promising to recapture the magic of their original Addie’s eatery on Rockville Pike. The Blacks now own nine D.C.-area dining spots, including Black’s Bar & Kitchen, Black Market Bistro, BlackSalt and Pearl Dive. Almost all of them have either remained open, reopened or announced a return date — but not Addie’s. Black Restaurant Group did not return our messages this week.

Adiós La Tasca

In another big blow to the dining scene at Rockville Town Square, the La Tasca restaurant chain has filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy. La Tasca, which specialized in Spanish tapas and sangria, was one of the last original tenants still in business at Rockville Town Square. The company once had four locations, but the Washington Business Journal reports that liquidation is imminent.

Two was too many

If you were wondering how long that two-Walgreens situation was going to last in Potomac Village, the answer is: just a couple more weeks. The drugstore chain has been operating two stores on opposite sides of River Road since 2018, when Walgreens acquired 1,900 Rite Aid locations. The store near Safeway, previously a Rite Aid, is the one that will remain in business. The older Walgreens, near Potomac Grocer, will close its doors June 3rd.

Last Call at Neiman’s, Goldberg’s Bagels, auctions heat up & the new shopping landscape

May 14, 2020 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Shopping won't look like it used to

As we draw closer to the reopening of Montgomery County — date still to be determined — our stores are preparing to welcome back customers to an altered shopping environment. Masks will be de rigueur, of course, with some places handing out gloves and sanitizer. Staffers will be cleaning constantly, enforcing social distancing and limiting traffic in their stores. Bra fittings, makeup testing and other “high-touch” services will no longer be offered. Fitting rooms will be scarce at some stores and closed at others; “try-it-on-at-home” will be the norm. And all that stuff you end up returning? It will have to be quarantined and/or disinfected before going back to the racks. Lastly, forget about bringing cash: A lot of stores will no longer accept it.

Last call for Last Call?

With Neiman Marcus joining the ranks of retailers in Chapter 11, we’re not too optimistic about the future of the Last Call outlet in Rockville. Even before the pandemic caused all department stores to close, the Dallas-based chain had announced plans to shutter most of its Last Call locations. Luxury and high prices are what Neiman Marcus is known for, and Last Call’s discount model had been chipping away at the mystique. At Congressional Plaza, Last Call occupies a massive space next to the new Barnes & Noble and the upcoming “FitRow” gym hub. (You remember gyms, those places where we used to go to work out?)

Is Goldberg's coming back?

Store Reporter readers have been wondering about the fate of the Goldberg’s bagel chain, whose restaurants have remained closed throughout the pandemic. The phone line at Goldberg’s Cabin John location has been disconnected, but owners tell us it’s only temporary and their restaurants will reopen in a couple of weeks. Also expected to make a comeback is longtime favorite Bagel City, which has been dark on Rockville Pike since March. More on that in our April 23rd edition.

While people are home, auctions heat up

With so much of our time spent at home these days, a lot of us are viewing our surroundings with fresh eyes. For some, the moment finally has arrived to fill up those blank walls and empty shelves. For others, now is the time to start selling off unwanted art, jewelry and collectibles. Debrah Dunner, a Potomac-based rep for the auction house Freeman’s, says clients are consigning everything from fine art to jewelry, designer furniture and rare books. “Some of our clients are getting ready to downsize, and some are just looking around and realizing that they don’t need all this stuff in their homes,” she says. And with online auctions making it easier than ever to participate, Dunner says first-time buyers are entering the market at record levels. “No one is going out to dinner or going places right now,” she says. “So instead of collecting experiences, a lot of people are looking to spend money on objects they can own.” Are you thinking of buying, selling or just want to know how much your stuff is worth? Dunner offers free auction estimates via virtual appointments, with easy no-contact pickup of your goods. Questions? Email ddunner@freemansauction.com or call (301) 738-0347.

Lord & Taylor, J. Crew and more bankruptcy updates — plus our Mother’s Day Guide

May 7, 2020 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Is this the last of Lord & Taylor?

Lord & Taylor bankruptcy rumors started swirling this week after Reuters reported that the retailer plans to liquidate all inventory when its stores reopen. The report has yet to be confirmed, but locals already are speculating about the fate of the White Flint property if Lord & Taylor indeed goes out of business. The venerable department store chain was sold last year to Le Tote, a clothing rental company that had pledged to bring back its elegant reputation. The pandemic, of course, has changed everything. The White Flint Lord & Taylor store, which has been the subject of much litigation over the years, is one of 38 remaining locations nationwide. Stay tuned to Store Reporter for what’s next.

More on the bankruptcy beat

In the current bleak retail landscape, bankruptcies are happening so fast that it’s getting tough to keep up. This week’s Chapter 11 filings include the parent company of J. Crew and Madewell, both of which have a presence at Westfield Montgomery mall. The two chains are expected to survive the bankruptcy process without closing any stores. Gold’s Gym also filed Chapter 11 this week and is planning to reorganize, but 30 of its corporate-owned locations will be closing permanently. This bankruptcy filing does not affect the two Gold’s Gyms at Wintergreen Plaza and Rockville Town Square, both of which are independently owned by franchisees. But we do expect some closings for the Vienna-based Hair Cuttery chain, which also filed Chapter 11 and is now changing hands. All Hair Cuttery locations, along with sister chains Bubbles and Salon Cielo, will be under new ownership by summer. It’s unclear how many of them will reopen.

Game on at Game Gym

With schools closed for the rest of the year and many summer camps already canceled, Rockville-based Game Gym is offering all-new programming “From Home.” The three-year-old esports studio coaches kids and teens in games like League of Legends, Rocket League, Minecraft and Valorant. Even though they can’t be together at Game Gym headquarters right now, owner Josh Hafkin says the transition to online offerings has been smooth — and also surprisingly social, as kids get to know each other while chatting and playing virtually. All Game Gym camps include morning fitness training with live feedback from coaches or special guests, followed by coach-led online gaming in the afternoons. “The main thing for parents to know is that this is an active camp,” Hafkin says. “We have meaningful conversations about hot-button issues, we’re coaching, we’re providing community and life lessons. We’re doing a lot more than just playing games.” Interested in Game Gym’s online programs? To save $20 on afternoon classes: click here and use code REPORTER20.
