Amazon grocery stalls, Bed Bath & Beyond at a breaking point, home-baked desserts & new teen store at the mall

Amazon Fresh is wilting

The outlook is no longer so fresh for Amazon’s new grocery store, which has been standing empty on Shady Grove Road since construction wrapped up last summer. The walls are painted, the signs are up, and the “Just Walk Out” technology has been ready to roll for months. But the store is still dark, the shelves are still bare, and Amazon tells us it still hasn’t scheduled an opening date. This “zombie store” scenario has been playing out at Amazon groceries all over the country, leading to industry speculation that the entire concept is about to shut down. That’s what happened with Amazon’s book stores and 4-Star stores, which all closed their doors last year. This week Amazon announced that it’s laying off 18,000 people, with many of the cutbacks coming from its in-person store operations. All of which means that we may never get to “just walk out” with our groceries on Shady Grove Road.

Bed Bath & no Beyond?

The future is looking worse than ever for Bed Bath & Beyond, which announced this week that it’s running out of cash. Unless business picks up — unlikely now that the holidays are over and there’s little new merchandise on the shelves — bankruptcy appears to be imminent for the 52-year-old chain. In our area, Bed Bath & Beyond closed its store in Gaithersburg but still has one location on Rockville Pike. The company also owns the Buy Buy Baby chain, and it used to own Cost Plus World Market — but it sold that business in 2020 to raise more cash.

New sweets at the mall

There’s a new local bakery to check out on your next visit to Westfield Montgomery mall: Adonni’s Desserts, now open on the second level across from 7-11. On the menu: cakes, brownies, muffins, sweet potato pie and banana pudding — plus amusement park favorites like funnel cakes, fried Oreos and fried Pop-Tarts. This is the second eatery for owners Katrina and Adonis Adams, who also operate Malia’s Kitchen just around the corner. The two businesses are named after the Adams’ daughters, and their menus are based on longtime family recipes. The biggest seller? “Sweet potato pie,” Katrina Adams tells us. “And our banana pudding is something that you won’t find anywhere else in this area.”

New teen store at the mall

Fast-fashion retailer Papaya has opened its doors at Westfield Montgomery mall, featuring casual and trendy offerings at moderate prices. This is the latest in the mall’s ever-growing assortment of stores aimed at teen girls, from Aerie/Offline, Aéropostale, American Eagle and Forever 21 to PacSun, Urban Outfitters, Windsor and Zara. These days, data shows that teens and young twenty-somethings are shopping in person more often than their moms and grandmas.
