A weekend’s worth of openings, new winery for Rockville, new bakery for Pike & Rose

Here’s your retail & restaurant scoop for the week of Aug. 30th, 2018.

What’s opening this weekend

Staying home for Labor Day weekend and looking for some new places to check out? Here’s your shortlist.

  • Japanese retailer Uniqlo opens at Pike & Rose on Saturday (Sept. 1) with a morning full of festivities from Japanese drummers to free Kung Fu tea. (More on Uniqlo in our Aug. 16th edition).
  • Sephora also debuts its newest store this weekend at Gaithersburg’s Downtown Crown.
  • Le Pain Quotidien opens on Sunday (Sept. 3) at Cabin John Village. The neighboring Shake Shack won’t be ready this weekend, but we’re told it will be opening on Wednesday, Sept. 5. (More on Cabin John’s new restaurants in our Aug. 23rd edition.
  • Spice 6 opened this week in the Dining Terrace at Westfield Montgomery mall, offering Indian food with a Chipotle-style assembly line format. We like the naan pizza, which can be topped with your choice of chutneys and curries. For more on Spice 6, click here.

New winery for Rockville

Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant is heading to Rockville. The Ilinois-based chain is taking 12,000 square feet at the new Research Row development, joining One Life Fitness and Chick-fil-A off I-270 at West Montgomery Avenue. Cooper’s Hawk, which also has locations in Reston, Ashburn and Annapolis, offers an upscale menu focused on food and wine pairings — plus a wine-tasting room and a wine-centric gourmet market. A construction timeline hasn’t been set yet, but you can preview the menu here.

Grilled Oyster
Sunday Morning Bakehouse

Fresh from the oven at Pike & Rose

A popular bakery at the Pike & Rose weekend farm market will soon be moving in full-time. Sunday Morning Bakehouse, owned by Rockville native Caroline Yi, has earned an avid following for specialties like pain au chocolat, jam-filled brioche donuts and “Elvis” croissants stuffed with peanut butter, bananas and bacon. This will be the first brick-and-mortar location for Yi, who hopes to open next summer with an expanded menu including coffee, sandwiches and all-day breakfast.
