New taqueria for Rockville, Quincy’s debuts in Potomac, Walking Company walks away

January 14, 2021 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

New taqueria for Rockville

Northern Virginia taco chain Taco Bamba is making its move into Maryland, taking over the former Modern Market space at Congressional Plaza. Chef/owner Victor Albisu, a one-time semifinalist for the James Beard Foundation’s Chef Awards, says he’s had his eye on Rockville Pike for years. He hopes to have the new location up and running by spring, offering takeout and delivery as well as outdoor seating in the courtyard shared by LebTav, Chopt and Starbucks. In addition to tacos, the menu will include wings, enchiladas, vegetarian options and some Maryland-inspired dishes — plus local beer, Mexican beer and agave-infused cocktails. “This will be a place where you can get a really good, inexpensive meal in a fun environment,” Albisu says. And when the pandemic is over, “we hope our bar will become a Rockville destination.”

Quincy's debuts in Potomac

After a year of construction at Potomac Woods Plaza, the newest Quincy’s sports bar made its debut this week in the former Amici Miei space near Brooklyn’s Deli. The menu features classic American fare, from wings to salads to steaks, with 20 beers on tap and 32 flat-screen TVs — including three outside. Eventually, there will be game nights and live music. For now, you can order takeout or enjoy your meal in the outdoor heated tent. Scroll down for further details in our Store Reporter Guide.

The Walking Company steps out

The Walking Company, a mecca for stylish active footwear, has walked away from its longtime home at Westfield Montgomery mall. This is the third shoe store to exit the mall’s Nordstrom wing since March: Steve Madden went dark at the beginning of the pandemic, and Marmi disappeared last fall. In a corridor that was home to five shoe stores pre-pandemic, Stuart Weitzman and Aldo now stand alone. Is everyone buying their shoes online these days?

Trading Addie’s for oysters at Park Potomac; closings for Abercrombie and Not Your Average Joe’s

January 7, 2021 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Goodbye Addie's, hello oysters

New restaurant heading to Park Potomac in the former Addie’s space: King Street Oyster Bar, a D.C.-area chain opening its first location in Maryland. The menu will range from East and West Coast oysters, seafood and smoked fish to salads, sandwiches, brunch options and specialty cocktails. Addie’s closed its doors at the beginning of the pandemic (more on that in our May 21st issue), and we’ve heard rumors for months about various restaurant chains eyeing its prime corner space. Now that King Street has signed on the dotted line, we’re told that doors could open as early as February.

Rose's Luxury

There goes Not Your Average Joe's

Not Your Average Joe’s has closed its doors “until further notice” at the Georgetown Square shopping center. The Massachusetts-based chain says it’s “temporarily” closing some of its “lower-volume” restaurants and cutting back hours at others. Another location in Gaithersburg will remain open — at least for now. Many restaurants in colder parts of the U.S. are trying this hibernation strategy as a way of cutting expenses to the bare minimum until it’s warm enough for outdoor dining. Not Your Average Joe’s has been open on Old Georgetown Road since 2015, replacing one-time favorite Hamburger Hamlet.

Abercrombie's out at the mall

This week we say goodbye to Abercrombie & Fitch, which is closing its doors after a long run at Westfield Montgomery mall. In its heyday back in the early 2000s, Abercrombie was a favorite of label-conscious teens and a target of criticism for its risqué ads and catalogs. But the clothing chain has fallen out of fashion with today’s young shoppers, and many locations are downsizing or closing altogether: By the end of this month, flagship stores in Dusseldorf, London, Munich, Paris and Brussels will all go dark. At Westfield Montgomery mall, this will be the last of Abercrombie & Fitch; sister stores Abercrombie Kids and Hollister closed their doors in 2016.

Indoor dining is out, new Potomac sports bar is in — plus holiday meals & gift ideas

December 17, 2020 By Store Reporter 2 Comments

Indoor dining is off the table

Indoor dining was banned at Montgomery County restaurants this week after new rules went into effect on Tuesday night. Takeout, delivery and outdoor dining are still allowed, but tents on the sidewalk must keep at least one side entirely open and space their tables at least six feet apart. Also: No outside dining after 10 p.m. Retailers now have to cap traffic at one person per 200 square feet — maximum 150 people total — unless they get a waiver from the county. Update: On Friday (Dec. 18) the Restaurant Association of Maryland filed a legal challenge to executive orders prohibiting indoor dining in Montgomery County, Prince George’s County and Baltimore City. Stay tuned.

Quincy's ready for kickoff

With all the news about restaurant closings these days, we’re happy to report on an opening: Quincy’s sports bar is ready to make its debut in the former Amici Miei space at Potomac Woods Plaza. “We’ll definitely be open by the end of the year,” says partner John Sahakian, co-owner of the Quincy’s chain as well as two Title Boxing clubs. Sahakian’s team has spent a year renovating the Potomac Woods space, including new finishes, new furniture and new doors and windows that let in more natural light. There are 35 TVs that will be tuned to different games, including three at the outside entrance. Sahakian is still finalizing the menu, which will feature sandwiches, wings, pizzas, flatbreads, wraps, salads, cocktails and 20 beers on tap. If things go well, doors will open around Christmas.

Chapter 11 update

As we wrap up 2020, the retail bankruptcies continue to roll in. Francesca’s, which shuttered its Pike & Rose location last year, is among the latest additions to the Chapter 11 club with more closings planned for 2021. Guitar Center is also in Chapter 11, but the chain expects to emerge this month with most of its locations intact. And Bed Bath & Beyond, which closed its Gaithersburg store this year, is looking to raise more cash by selling off its World Market chain. We’ll likely see another round of store closing in January, after holiday shopping is over and retailers cut their losses.

Family fun with Lego

Since we’re all going to be hunkered down indoors this winter, the new Lego store at Westfield Montgomery mall has some great ideas for family projects. We got a chance to test out the new art sets, which help you create images of Star Wars characters, the Beatles, Iron Man, Mickey Mouse, Hogwarts or Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe. When you’re done, you can hang up your creation or take it apart and start a new one. The Star Wars set, for example, can be used to create Darth Maul, Kylo Ren or Darth Vader — or buy three kits to create a giant version of Luke Skywalker’s dad-gone-bad. Lego art kids are $119.99 each online, or find them at the Lego store at Westfield Montgomery mall.

Lands' End takes off the winter chill

If you’re looking for gifts for this cozy winter at home, the Lands’ End store in Rockville is full of great ideas. This year we got to try out the ultimate work-from-home ensemble: flannel pajama pants (with pockets!) and felt slippers with sherpa lining. Throw on a black shirt for your Zoom meetings, and no one needs to know how comfortable you actually are. We also love the company’s classic totes and canvas storage bins. Shop Lands’ End online, or visit the store in person at Congressional Plaza.

Restaurant restrictions rolling back in, closings at Park Potomac — plus holiday meals, Korean hot dogs & Chick-fil-A

New dining rules roll in next week

Get ready for the next round of restaurant dining restrictions. With COVID cases continuing to rise, Montgomery County executives plan to suspend indoor dining as of Tuesday (Dec. 14th) at 5 p.m. Delivery and takeout will still be allowed, but there will be new rules for outdoor dining tents: They must keep at least one side entirely open, and they must have at least six feet of space between diners at different tables. Also, those single-party dining “bubbles” that have been popping up around town will be off-limits without special permission from the county. The new rules will affect stores and malls as well: Capacity will now be capped at one person per 200 square feet of retail space.

Park Potomac update: Wine Harvest, yoga studio exiting this month

These are the final few weeks for Wine Harvest, which will close its doors on New Year’s Eve after a decade at Park Potomac. The Meyrowitz family, which ran this restaurant as well as the recently closed Kentlands location, says it was too difficult to turn a profit in the current environment. “A large portion of Park Potomac residents are staying safe and staying inside,” says Andrew Meyrowitz, who now works for Schneider’s of Capitol Hill. And with nearby offices empty for months at a time, the restaurant lost much of its business crowd as well. “It was time to hang up our corkscrews,” Meyrowitz says. Wine Harvest isn’t the only tenant exiting this month: Right around the corner, Park Potomac Yoga is also going dark. Owner Debi Schenk, who opened the studio just last year, says her lease didn’t make sense without in-person classes. Schenk is teaching online for now and hopes to reopen nearby when the pandemic is over.

Let Rose's Luxury do your holiday cooking

Our holiday gatherings may be more intimate than usual this year, but smaller can be special when there’s a fabulous meal to be shared. This month, D.C. favorite Rose’s Luxury is offering traditional menus with a fun and festive twist. Check out the Hanukkah spread: brisket lo mein, potato latkes with sour cream, roasted applesauce and chocolate babka. The Christmas Feast features honey-baked ham or center cut beef tenderloin, mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, roasted chestnuts with celery root salad, roasted squash with pomegranate — plus a can of Ocean Spray cranberry sauce, just like mom used to make. After that comes the New Year’s menu: potato pancakes with crème fraîche and caviar, long noodles and brisket stir-fry, fried chicken, black-eyed peas, and a chocolate and salted caramel tart. You can pick up, order à la carte, or have everything delivered to your door in Rockville, Potomac, Bethesda or anywhere else within 30 miles of Capitol Hill. Ready to order? Mall dining scene: Korean hot dogs and Chick-fil-A

With all the restaurant closings at Westfield Montgomery mall these days, at least there’s one new eatery on the way: Ssong’s Hotdog, opening soon next to Orange Julius. Ssong’s sells corn dog-like snacks that are deep-fried on the outside and filled with meat or cheese on the inside. On the other side of the Dining Terrace, Chick-fil-A was dark this week, but we’re told it’s being deep-cleaned and will soon be back in business.

Athleta to Rockville, Potomac salon closes, two more restaurants that won’t be back

October 15, 2020 By Store Reporter 2 Comments

Athleta on the way

Athleta, the Gap’s answer to Lululemon, is heading to Rockville Pike. The activewear store will open next spring at Congressional Plaza, alongside Chico’s and just around the corner from upcoming tenants CorePower Yoga and Orangetheory Fitness. This will be the third Athleta in the D.C. area (the others are in Tysons Corner and Georgetown) and the first activewear store to open at Congressional Plaza since Lucy went out of business in 2017. The athleisure clothing segment has been booming this year, as women working at home spend even more money on stretchy leggings and sports bras. In fact, Athleta’s sales have been racing past those of sister brands Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic.

Poké Papa out, more closings likely

The restaurant fallout continues at Westfield Montgomery mall: This week we got word that Poké Papa will not be reopening at the Dining Terrace. The Hawaiian-style eatery had been in business for just six months when the pandemic began, and it’s been dark since the mall reopened in June. Also still dark as of this week: Gusto, Spice 6, Jamba Juice, the Sarku sushi bar and Aroma. Confirmed closings at the Dining Terrace so far: Beefsteak, Mirch Masala, Möge Tee and now Poké Papa.

Flower Child won't bloom again

Sad news for Flower Child fans: the Rockville location at Travilah Square Shopping Center will not be making a comeback. The restaurant closed last spring after less than two years in business, even though its sister location at Wildwood has been open and busy throughout the pandemic. Last month, Flower Child execs told us they couldn’t commit to a reopening date. This week, they confirmed what we already suspected: This is yet another restaurant that’s gone for good.

4&Co. Salon

So much for Karma

This week we say goodbye to Karma by Erwin Gomez, the posh salon that lasted just two years at Park Potomac. This location had been the first outside of D.C. for Gomez, a makeup artist best known for glamming up celebs like Jennifer Garner, Tina Fey and Allison Janney. The closing, first reported by Bethesda Magazine, is another big blow to Park Potomac after the recent departure of Addie’s restaurant just across the street. The local salon scene has shrunk quite a bit this year – and not just because of the pandemic. More on that in our Aug. 20th edition.

Under the big top at Park Potomac, dine-in and diamonds at the mall, shakeups on the salon scene

August 20, 2020 By Store Reporter 2 Comments

Under the big top at Park Potomac — plus an Attman's update

Latest addition to the Park Potomac dining scene: a lighted tent where customers can order from the surrounding restaurants and dine al fresco with plenty of room for social distancing. If you were hoping to order from Attman’s, though, you’ll have to wait a little longer. The deli was supposed to open this week, but owners tell us they are now aiming for early September. More on plans for the new Attman’s in our July 2nd edition.

Shakeup on the salon scene

We’ve written a lot about stores and restaurants closing these past few months, but the local salon scene also has suffered some cuts. At Pike & Rose, Mynd Spa (formerly Elizabeth Arden Red Door) went out of business after its parent company filed bankruptcy, while the PR at Partners salon permanently closed during the pandemic. Multiple Hair Cuttery and Bubbles locations also are gone after their parent company filed Chapter 11, and we’ve lost at least one Supercuts (in downtown Rockville). Also, Zohra wasn’t the only salon to exit Cabin John Village; kiddie favorite Tropicuts is out as well. Zohra’s owner, Ofeer Marwani, says he’s still deciding on a new location.

Dine-in and diamonds at the mall

Urban Plates reopened for business at Westfield Montgomery mall this week, providing the only option for indoor seating in the Dining Terrace. All of the surrounding eateries are limited to takeout, and some of the larger ones (including Cava, Gusto and Poké Papa) have not yet committed to a return date. The other big news at the mall is a new store, Virginia-based Elite Jewelers, which will be taking a large space on the second floor between Pandora and Macy’s Home. The newcomer will displace tire store Roll by Goodyear, which is relocating to a kiosk, and Turkish specialty shop Chaliskan, which is moving to the Nordstrom wing.

Zohra exits Cabin John, Goldberg’s reopens — plus the return of food halls, farmers markets & patio dining

June 4, 2020 By Store Reporter 3 Comments

Zohra cuts out of Cabin John

Many hair salons began reopening this week, but Zohra at Cabin John Village was not among them. Owner Ofeer Marwani, who’s been with the salon since 1994, says he opted not to renew his lease after a decade inside the mini-mall. “We just couldn’t come to terms” over a new rental agreement, Marwani says. “I would’ve had to raise my prices for customers in order to stay at Cabin John, so I finally had to walk away.” What’s next for Zohra? Marwani says he’s already scouting locations and expects to reopen nearby with the same team of stylists. “This community has supported me for 26 years,” he says. “I’m not going anywhere.” Neither is jeweler Susan Koehn, who operates a store inside the salon and says she she’ll reopen wherever Marwani signs a new lease.

On the comeback trail

Goldberg’s New York Bagels, closed since the end of March, reopened this week in Potomac, Rockville and Silver Spring. Most of the local farmers markets are also back in business – some with the option to pre-order your food, instead of strolling from vendor to vendor. Bubble tea and ice cream shops are beginning to return as well, and Asian food halls The Spot, The Block and Pike Kitchen have partially reopened for takeout, delivery and curbside pickup. If you’re looking to support black-owned businesses, York Castle Caribbean Ice Cream is now scooping on Rockville Pike and the Black Lion coffee shop is in the process of reopening on Traville Gateway Drive.

Taking it outside

Outdoor dining slowly returned to Montgomery County this week, as our local restaurants and shopping centers started opening their patios and sidewalk seating. For customers who don’t feel comfortable — and for restaurants that don’t have the option — contact-free ordering, delivery and curbside pickup will continue to be the norm. Check out this week’s Store Reporter Guide for the latest info on patio dining, summer menu updates and local shopping. And don’t miss our new section, “Celebrations,” for creative ideas to honor dads, grads, mitzvahs and more in this era of social distancing.

The Lord & Taylor lowdown

Lord & Taylor, under new ownership this fall, is closing its stores at Tysons Corner and Dulles Town Center just months after exiting Gaithersburg’s Lakeforest Mall. So what about the North Bethesda store, which stands alone at the site of the former White Flint Mall? Not to worry. A company spokesman assures us that the White Flint store will remain open, along with the one in Chevy Chase. If you happen to stop by, don’t miss the newly expanded second-floor clearance section with a smattering of designer bargains directly from Manhattan. Next year, we’re told, all Lord & Taylor stores will begin integrating merchandise from new owner Le Tote. More on the acquisition in our Aug. 29th edition.

New Haven pizza on the way

New Englanders were cheering this week when WTOP reported that Connecticut pizzeria Frank Pepe is heading to Westfield Montgomery mall. This will be the first Maryland location for the family-owned business, which was founded almost a century ago in New Haven. On the menu: Neapolitan-style pizzas with thin crusts and charred edges, including a signature pie featuring littleneck clams, garlic and olive oil. The mall won’t say when or where Frank Pepe will be opening. (We’re betting on the former Crave space, which has been empty since last April.) Hopefully this new arrival will help fill the void left by the upcoming closure of Rockville’s Pizza CS. More on that in our Nov. 14th edition. (Editor’s update: We now know that Frank Pepe will be replacing Bobby’s Burger Palace. Details in our Jan. 30th edition.)

Dawson’s returns, bye bye bike stores, vintage market for Potomac and a music school for Cabin John

December 13, 2018 By Store Reporter 1 Comment

The ride is over for Performance Bicycle

Sad news for local cyclists: The Performance Bicycle retail chain is riding off into the sunset. The company is in Chapter 11 and plans to close all stores — including the popular Rockville location at Congressional Plaza. Looking to score some deals? You’d better roll quickly; closing sales are going on now.

Vintage vibes on River Road

New place to shop on River Road: The Potomac French Market is open Thursdays through Sundays in the weathered barn that once was home to Flora’s Feathered Nest. With a similar mix of new and vintage gifts, home decor, antique furniture and upcycled goods, the store will please those who have missed Flora’s since it closed in 2016. “We were huge fans,” says co-owner Teri Troxell, who notes that she and partner Rene Redfield Shaw were also inspired by vintage markets in Paris and New Orleans as well as Chartreuse & Co. in Frederick. The pair took over the space from the Sonoran Rose boutique, which moved out last summer. (More on that in our July 19th edition.) You’ll find the Potomac French Market at 12211 River Road. Hours vary, so it’s best to call ahead: 301-807-9945.

Dawson's is back

Dawson’s Market, closed since late October, makes a triumphant return this weekend with a new owner and a new commitment to serving as a “one-stop shop” for Rockville Town Square. Longtime manager Bart Yablonsky has purchased the store from its out-of-town owners and is making changes that he says the community has asked for. “We’re expanding the product mix with more national brands that people will recognize and more convenience items like flashlights and batteries,” he says. “We’ll have freshly sliced meats and cheeses at the deli, and a new selection of conventional produce along with the organics.” Yablonsky says the wider range of products will allow for lower prices on some items — but he promises the store will continue to specialize in local and organic foods.

Westfield is sold, Potomac restaurant closes, Hot Pot on the Pike & holiday discounts

December 14, 2017 By Store Reporter 1 Comment

Westfield changes hands

Westfield Corp., the Australian company that owns Westfield Montgomery Mall, announced this week that it’s being sold for $15.8 billion to the French firm Unibail-Rodamco. What does that mean for our local mall and its sister property, Westfield Wheaton? No one knows yet. For now, mall staff tells us that everything is status quo and the bustling holiday season is proceeding as usual. Meanwhile, the mall has lost a few more tenants in the past few weeks: The 3-D Manaco photo store is gone, as is the Boardwalk burger-and-fry restaurant (previously known as Kraze Burger and then Burger Venue). Also on the way out is Vitamin World, whose parent company has filed Chapter 11.

Hot Pot on the Pike

Urban Hot Pot made its debut this week in the Galvan complex on Rockville Pike, next door to the recently opened Akira ramen restaurant. There’s an all-you-can-eat menu for $24.99, with heating stations at the tables and a conveyor belt that sends out fresh ingredients for the broth bowls. This is the second hot pot restaurant to open in the area this year, following Little Dipper at Rockville Town Square. And a whole new wave of Asian eateries is headed to Rockville in 2018; we’ll have more after the holidays.

French Bakery, Bowling & Bocce — plus Anthropologie and a CalTort giveaway

French bakery says bonjour to Rockville

Fresh Baguette, the Bethesda bakery known for its authentic French breads and pastries, opens its second location next week at 804 Hungerford Drive in Rockville. The new space is much bigger than the one in downtown Bethesda, with a large factory in the back preparing wholesale orders for clients like Ritz-Carlton, the Watergate Hotel and Potomac’s new Filicori Zecchini coffee house. (Check out our Facebook page for a look behind the scenes, featuring the biggest mixers you’ve ever seen.) Breads, pastries, coffee and custom-made sandwiches will be available from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily starting July 25th. For a closer look at Fresh Baguette, click here.

Filicori Zecchini at Park Potomac

Coffee house opens at Park Potomac

Opening in mid-July after more than a year of construction at Park Potomac: Filicori Zecchini, the European-style coffee house on the ground floor of The Perry. Owner Elhussien Ahmed, an Egyptian native with a passion for Italian coffee, has been laboring over details from the imported mosaic wall tiles to the sleek Italian chairs to the stunning copper coffee bar. The menu will include pastries, sandwiches and grab-and-go items from the French bakery Fresh Baguette, plus Italian specialty drinks like bicerìn and marrocchino (espresso and milk froth mixed with hot chocolate or cocoa powder).  Smashburger at The Galvan

What’s the story with Smashburger?

Fast-casual chain Smashburger has been closing restaurants all over Montgomery County, including one in downtown Bethesda last winter and two more in Gaithersburg and Germantown over the past few weeks. Julian Goodman, the company’s local franchisee, says all three restaurants were company-owned and their locations were not the right fit. Goodman, who opened his first Smashburger at The Galvan on Rockville Pike last year, says he’s actively looking for more locations in this area.

Tough times for True Religion

True Religion, the Los Angeles-based manufacturer of designer denim, is the latest retailer to file Chapter 11. The brand came to prominence in the early 2000s, when high-end denim bars were all the rage and no one used the term “athleisure.” Now True Religion is looking to reduce its $500 million debt load with hopes of emerging from bankruptcy later this year. At least 27 of the company’s 130-plus stores are expected to close. No word yet on the fate of the Westfield Montgomery Mall location, which opened in 2014.

Bangkok Shrimp at California Tortilla

Back for the summer: Bangkok Shrimp at CalTort

Bangkok Shrimp, a summertime specialty at California Tortilla, is back on the menu through the end of August. Lightly breaded with a mild red chili sauce, the spicy-sweet delicacy is the star of Bangkok Shrimp Tacos, Bangkok Shrimp Bowls and (our favorite) Bangkok Shrimp Quesadillas. Like all the food at CalTort, it’s made fresh in small batches all day long. “Many people don’t realize how serious we are about serving only the freshest ingredients,” says CalTort exec Keith Goldman. “We actually do not have freezers in any of our restaurants. So every day we’re getting something delivered, be it produce or proteins… and for the next few months, shrimp. That’s why some of our menu items are only offered seasonally, even though they’re guest favorites.” Want to see what’s cooking at the Cabin John CalTort this summer? Click here.

New look for Ann Taylor

The Ann Taylor store at Westfield Montgomery Mall is temporarily closed for renovation. The retailer has announced plans to shutter some of its locations this year, along with those of sister chains including Loft and Lane Bryant. But the Montgomery Mall store is expected to reopen by fall.

Walgreens at Potomac Woods Plaza

Walgreens & Rite Aid break up

After two years of protracted negotiations with U.S. regulators, Walgreens and Rite Aid have called off their plans for a merger. Instead, Walgreens has agreed to buy 2,350 Rite Aid stores in the Northeast, the Southeast and the Mid-Atlantic. The company hasn’t disclosed which stores are part of this new deal, but a spokesman tells us that all will eventually be absorbed into the Walgreens brand. That likely means one less drug store for Potomac Village, where Walgreens and Rite Aid are neighbors on opposite sides of River Road.

Bye bye Bebe

Things are looking pretty bare at the Bebe store at Westfield Montgomery Mall, which will close its doors at the end of this month. The company initially said it would stay in business as an online retailer, but it’s now unclear whether that will actually happen.

Goggles at Cassel's

News splash

Aardvark Swim & Sport, a fixture at Wintergreen Plaza for more than two decades, is heading into pool season with a new name and a new owner. The store was purchased by Virginia businessman Lee Cassel, a longtime sporting goods retailer who operates a similar store in Herndon as well as a sports complex just down the road. “I’ve known Aardvark owner Bob York for years, as he and I had competing stores in Virginia,” Cassel says. “When I got wind that he was going to retire, we worked out a deal for me to take over this location.” The Wintergreen store, which will now be called Cassel’s Swim & Awards, will also offer custom plaques, trophies and personalized signs. New seafood market may be on the way; White Flint Mall update; Costco and Konplott

New seafood market may be on the way

Good news for fans of fresh seafood: We hear that a new gourmet fish market will soon be setting up shop near the border of Potomac and Rockville. The owner, who has many years of experience in the seafood industry, has his eye on a location that’s convenient to both areas — but not too close to Potomac Village, which already has two gourmet markets of its own. Stay tuned to Store Reporter for more details when the deal is done.

Lord & Taylor

White Flint Mall — finally ready to come down?

The owners of White Flint Mall won a victory in federal appeals court this week when a judge ruled against Lord & Taylor’s attempt to stop the property from being redeveloped. The department store, which owns its own building and has no plans to leave, is the only tenant left at the once-luxurious mall after owner Lerner Enterprises allowed all the other leases to expire. Lerner plans to demolish the property and replace it with an open-air mix of retail, restaurants, offices and living space. Lord & Taylor took Lerner to court in an effort to force the company to repopulate White Flint Mall instead of tearing it down. But an appeals court judge said that plan wasn’t realistic. The redevelopment project still has some governmental hurdles to clear, but this week’s decision means it’s now just a matter of time before the wrecking ball arrives.

Costco says goodbye Amex, hello Visa

Just weeks after announcing its impending breakup with American Express, Costco has moved on to a new credit card partner. Starting in April 2016, Visa will be the only credit card that Costco accepts. Also on the way out is the the Costco American Express TrueEarnings card, which will be replaced next year by a co-branded Costco Visa. Still to be determined: whether that new Visa card will offer the same level of generous cash-back rewards.

Konplott

Goodbye — again — to Konplott

Speaking of goodbyes, this week we bid adieu for the second time to Konplott at Westfield Montgomery Mall. The four-year-old store had been the first U.S. location for the European retailer, which sells an eye-catching line of colorful crystal pieces by designer Miranda Konstantindou. This was the second exit in less than a year for Konplott, which vacated its store near Macy’s last spring but later resurfaced in the form of a kiosk outside Nordstrom. This time the departure appears to be permanent: Konplott’s phone number is no longer in service.

Reader Favorite: French baguettes at Breadsmith

Click here to share your favorite — and read on for a recommendation from one of your neighbors. Sheila Weiss of Potomac can’t get enough of the crusty French loaves at Breadsmith in the Cabin John Shopping Center (not to mention the store’s delicious fresh-out-of-the-oven aroma). “They stock
authentic French baguettes ($2.50), soft and chewy inside with a wonderful crust,” says Weiss, who works as chief science officer for DrugLogic in Reston. “I always skip the soggy supermarket version and head over to Breadsmith for the real thing.”

New grocer in Potomac Village, Legal Sea Foods closes, steaks in downtown Rockville

Potomac Grocer

New grocer in the Village

Potomac Grocer, an upscale market specializing in local, natural and organic foods, is finally making its long-awaited debut in Potomac Village. “We’re kind of like a Whole Foods or Balducci’s, but much smaller,” says owner Tom Spencer, noting that he’s put a lot of time into hiring the right staff. That includes two chefs — one dedicated to pastries, and the other focused on preparing meals to go. Potomac Grocer is on River Road next to Walgreens, in the space that spent decades serving horseback riders as The Surrey.

Legal no longer

Speaking of seafood: Boston-based Legal Sea Foods has closed its restaurant at Westfield Montgomery Mall. No comment from the company, which also shuttered locations in Florida and New York. As we told you last week, the mall plans to open several new restaurants and a movie theater later this year. But it’s still deciding what to do with Legal’s leftover space.

82 Steak Out, Rockville Town Square

Steaking a claim on Rockville

There’s a new place to eat in Rockville Town Square: 82 Steak Out has opened on Gibbs Street next to Noodles & Company. The concept is based on the French tradition of steak-and-fry eateries, says co-owner Anna Don, “but with an American twist” of a slightly broader menu — including sides like creamed spinach, cauliflower and sautéed mushrooms. Not to mention Philly cheesesteak sandwiches, which you definitely won’t find in Paris.

Kids’ Stores R Gone

Toys R Us and Pottery Barn Kids both exited Rockville Pike in recent weeks as their former homes — Mid-Pike Plaza and White Flint Mall — draw closer to dates with the wrecking ball. PB Kids bounced back right away, opening a new location at Mazza Gallerie in D.C. But Toys R Us, which has struggled for market share in recent years, says it has no plans to reopen in this area. The next-closest store is in Gaithersburg.

Dog park on the Pike, Korean food at the mall, another shoe store walks away

January 21, 2021 By Store Reporter Leave a Comment

Bark at the park next month

Looks like the long-awaited Pike & Rose dog park is finally going to open its doors at the end of February. Located just behind Julii and adjacent to the new parking garage, Bark Social will provide off-leash playtime for pooches while their owners eat, drink, work and socialize. (Staffers will even scoop the poop.) With more than 30,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space, co-owner Luke Silverman says Bark Social will easily accommodate social distancing. He’s selling monthly and annual memberships  ($40 to $285), but canine guests will be admitted for ten bucks — and dogless visitors are always free. “If you’re a human and you don’t have a dog, we’re just like any other bar, restaurant or coffee shop,” Silverman says. “You’ll just walk in, hop on our WiFi, head to the bar, watch a sports game and be surrounded by our community of dog enthusiasts.”

Seoul food at the mall

Finally some good news for the restaurant scene at Westfield Montgomery mall: Korean fast-food eatery Seoulspice is moving in. With three locations in the D.C. area and three more on the way, Seoulspice offers customizable bibimbap rice bowls, japchae noodle bowls, salads and Korean-style burritos. Signature combos include the “Seoul Train” (bulgogi beef, kale slaw and kimchi), the “Herbivore” (tofu, bean sprouts and ginger carrot sauce) and the “Fireball” (spicy pork, pickled radish and Korean hot sauce). Opening is tentatively scheduled for April, replacing the recently departed Spice 6. The mall still has a lot more empty restaurant spaces to fill: At least seven eateries have closed there since the pandemic began. More on that in our Dec. 3 edition.
